HERE'S HOW TO CREATE THE PERFECT SCANDINAVIAN HOME (PART 1)

Interior Design & Decor

Emelie and Ellen Hedén, two sisters from Stockholm, Sweden, are the founders of Möbler, a Scandinavian vintage and antique furniture store based in Singapore. Their love for interior design and vintage furniture has become the driving passion behind their business.

To them, a Scandinavian home is anything but predictable, but they believe many non-Scandinavians have misperceived the style, having been roped into believing that clean lines and little usage of accessories are all you need. Mirroring the Scandinavian aesthetic goes way beyond just that, and the siblings are keen to share their tips in this two part series, hoping their advice helps homeowners create the perfect Scandinavian home.

1. Colours

Both Emelie and Ellen feel that whites, greys, blacks, blues and browns are some of the best shades to use, and they help in creating a clean and calming look. Try not to stray too far from a toned down colour palette in case it produces a shift in mood and feel.

2. Materials

We all know wood is the most commonly used material in most Scandinavian homes, but metallic finishes in the form of lighting and accent pieces are also a great way to bring shine to your space. Copper or brass candleholders and bowls are suitable for accessorising, and some homeowners love incorporating leather into their interiors because it ages more gracefully compared to other materials.

3. Mix of textures and patterns

Scandinavian interiors are usually filled with muted tones and are typically rich in texture. It is not surprising that part of the decor usually comes in the form of warming textiles like sheep skins, wool or mohair throws and soft cotton. Not only do they provide a feeling of warmth and cosiness, they also add another layer of texture to a space. Do play with different materials, and don’t forget a Scandianavian home always curates well-placed surprises.

4. Plants and flowers

Fresh flowers and pots of plants are not a luxury but a necessity. Don't hold back on the greens, and incorporate as as many plants as you can into your abode. Spread them out so they're able to fill the entirety of your home.

5. Furniture - Form and function

In terms of furniture, the form is much dependent on the style, and the pieces you pick should always contain clean lines. For a more classical look, do not purchase newly produced retro or antique wannabes because that is as far away from the Scandinavian style as you can possibly go.

6. Mixing new with old

Scandinavan homes usually include a good mix of both authentic vintage pieces and modern picks. Vintage items certainly add an instant Scandinavian character to your home, and each come with their own story to tell.
