Just finish one of my project using ply and formica high-pressure laminate. Not easy working with laminate and my first time.

Definitely requires a lot more time working on it, cutting straight without cracks and edge trimming is most challenging. Now appreciate my previous contractor more :)

Now working on my 2nd project (larger scale) with laminate also. Got a hang of handling laminate, more satisfied with my work versus first one.

I check with Ban Heng leong. I think for a small sum, they also help basic assembly into box or etc. Not complex assembly tot.

Another note in working with ply and timber merchant is using inch/foot instead of metric measurement will get you more accurate cuts. Previously wood working with metric get me very inaccurate cuts.

Initially tot of going to Jurong East Hiap Heng for timber ... check they side, they really have loads of variety but they using a non-bench type saw so I am afraid that the longer piece of ply or timber will not be as straight as I wanted and lenght/width may not be as accurate.

Any one have good experience in their cutting?

Hey what do you mean by non bench saw type? I have been going to them and trust their quality. they cut at the back of the shop with a huge table saw type. Those that can cut 8 feet plywood. Always been straight for me and i think many forummers here have sent me thanks on recommending to them a great shop, you should try it bro. Another reason i trust them cause they been using indonesian and malaysian plywood. If your plywood got holes surely means you got the China plywood most shops carry which is very cheap. I have been to Tampines to purchase very cheap plywood. one piece can cost 30 dollars 8 feet by 4 feet but they will never cut. If you cut it will split. Only good for putting on floor as cheap backing. And Hiap Hin also carries it, but they only have it in their store. If you buy it they will advise you against cutting cause will surely split.

mmm .. I been there.. didnt see that they have the type of bench saw like what I see in Ban Heng Leong. Anyway ... I still have another project in mind, so next round I will try them.

The ply I use from Ban Hen Leong is Malaysia I think, cause I got a few pieces still got rubber print stamped "Made in Malaysia" ... I think "heng sway" cause similar piece, one got a few holes at the side, the other look perfectly alright.

I need some perforated metal sheet .. I one I got is not really what I wanted. Anyway 10 buck so just get it as spare first. I will be going down to Hiap Hin to take a look soon. I running behind schedule for my project le .. So far .. I got total of 3 x Laminate Sheet. Completely finish up 1. Still got a little from the 2nd and now using the 3rd.

:)

I was checking out the teak wood is actually quite expensive at defu lane. If you really need alot and on a budget, i managed to get hold of a contact from gul drive or gul circle, a factory that is doing supply to all shops in Singapore from my colleague. I will be calling to enquire and try to put up the price here. The teak wood sold at defu is about $65000 per tonne then they will work out slowly the cost of ur wood. like divide by 72000 then multiply by your feet and size. haha. that what my colleague who was in renovation line told me. so he said you bypass the middle man, will be alot cheaper. Will call and update everyone

Hi, is the contact from GUL drive still availble to us. I am thinking of some DIY projects. Thanks.

I have a question, if i will like to DIY my own feature wall so as to wall mount my lcd tv what wood is good? Will plywood give way to the weight of the tv?

The best bet is to mount your TV with an approved type TV Wall Bracket. If you want to mount it on a wooden back ground, use extra long screws and heavy duty raw plugs, thus going thru the plywood and anchoring the TV on the wall.

Of course, the plywood must be painted or varnished and screwed on to the wall first

I have just bought a samsung lcd tv 46 inches. I wanted to get them to install on my wooden wall, which I made using plywood. The guy say cannot. he claims that in time, plywood as it is pressed will expand cause of television heat and will be risky. may even drop. anyone had this problem? I have been wondering if he said is true.

What the guy said sound logic..

But I do believe it is possible to do something safe.... may be add a piece of steel sheet (the bigger the better) screwed on to the plywood. Then install standard TV bracket onto the metal sheet... or something like that....

yes. i was thinking of using chengai wood to redo the wall again. then use expansion bolts to fasten on my wall again. then i think should be hard enough. i am trying a balinese charm in my living room. My place has high moisture as its near the sea, so i guess I need to consider that wood will corrode in time.

Hey people, this is my contact from kranji, they have all profiles of wood. I get my special cabinet frame wood from them, its a little on the high side, but they have the most profiles with them. Please check the place if you all want wood in large scale. They have bulk discounts too, so it may even be cheaper. Please check this place.

Just came across this discussion and would like to help.

I am a timber supplier in Sungei Kadut.

website is www.naturewood.com.sg

We cut teak logs into sizes that you want.

We can supply decking materials like Balau and Chengal.

Feel free to drop by 38 Sungei Kadut Street 2.

If you have not seen a sawmill, this is the place to get a feel of it.

In time to come, you may not see these kind of mills in Singapore

as they are too expensive to upkeep here in Singapore.

For people who want to DIY, we also sell the glue and the varnishes.

The sanding machine are available too.

People who loves solid wood and like wood working can come.

Hi Hi ... woah .. your project is so big!!! I got formica directly from Formica. I pm you their contact. (Their webby is www.formica.com.sg)

Price is 48 before GST (51 plus after GST). Size of the Laminate is 4 ft x 8ft where they will roll it up for you.

FYI for first timer working on laminiate - If working on laminate, I recommend to get a Giken A-650 Cutter with Tungsten Carbide Tipped Edges or alternative. The HPL is thick and not easy to cut. I figure out a while to know how to cut it. Note that the cutter also can cut floor title, so I use a unwanted wood underneath the laminates while I cut. A trimmer (Makita cheaper.. I think also got even cheaper china brand trimmer) with flush self routing straight routing bit to trim the edge. My first project workmanship not so nice.. but after some trial and error, I learn. :)

Below is a good site that I start my learning.. Dowel wooden rod is good to align the laminate before sticking it. http://alsnetbiz.com/homeimprovement/formica.html

BTW .. where you get the aluminium angle ???

lorddraco, thanks for sharing info... we wanted to do the laminates on all 3 bedroom doors.. can buy the sheet off their shelf and ask them to cut according to the size of the doors?
