Within the fresh and vibrant estate of Jurong West, our featured flat exudes the style and comfort of a contemporary modern minimalist concept. Upon entering the flat you get the feel of stepping into a space wholly different from any HDB flat you have seen. And you wonder why.
Designer, Dick, soon enlightens us that part of the partitioning wall separating the dining area and living room has been removed, giving an optical effect that both teases and amazes with its ingenuity. Extending from the wall lies a grey-tinted TV feature panel with inbuilt display shelves. A row of stylishly white sliding drawers below the plasma TV conveniently hides all the wiring and electronic paraphernalia, keeping in line with the minimalist style.
Black, white and grey are the theme colours of the flat and this is reflected very clearly in the living room with the silvery grey TV console, white drawers with the modern-minimalist table complemented with the stark black sofa set. Drawing attention to an otherwise staid ceiling are diffused lights which glow from below the false ceiling. Alternating warm and white lights allow the owner to vary the lighting to either relax in the evening or to rush some work under stronger lights.
The dining area presents a smooth visual transition from the living room as it maintains the colour scheme from the living room while presenting the home owner an opportunity to show off his Coca Cola collection in a glass display cabinet. The wall where the cabinet used to lie against was removed and replaced with a glass panel with frosted horizontal lines to maintain the breezy openness of the flat.
The clean cut kitchen is zoned off from the rest of the living room by a glass sliding door enhanced with a strip of grey glass to add consistency and continuity with the colour scheme of the hall. Within the kitchen, concealed power points enable the resplendent coloured glass backing behind the stove to run freely and visually undisturbed across the wall. Suspended cabinets with solid surfaced tops, polished to shine float above the grey coloured matt-finished tiles gives a light spacey feel.

The minimalist feel of the hall is also translated to the master bedroom, with a little twist. The modern zen-minimalist style takes centrestage in the room with the warm laminate floor and concealed lights that diffuse and reflect ever so subtly to give you a cosy, bed-time feeling. Below the window lies a display rack that doubles up to help conceal the air-conditioning pipes. The wooden bed frame and bedside drawers add a warm accent to the feel of the room as the woven fabric shades are drawn down at night. A TV console panel conveniently separates the main bedroom from a mini walk in wardrobe and changing area which features a nifty pull out mirror which helps save on space.

LIGHTS
The use of both functional cool lights and the aesthetic warm lights with variable controls provide for multiple uses and mood settings for many occasions. The diffuse glow is less harsh on the eyes and plays well with the finishings of the house. |
 |
MOOD
The flat is zoned, reflecting the different moods and functions of each room with the living room having a comfortable and modern feel, the dining area having a warm family atmosphere, the kitchen having a sharp and clean look and the bedroom giving off the ever so warm and cosy zen feel. |
|
SPACE
The extensive remodeling and careful balance of space give an otherwise hard image of the flat a smooth flow. The use of light colours inter spaced with dark accents lightens the visuals of the house.
|
A constant feature throughout the house is the elegant use and remodeling of space to allow for a more spacious environment within a smaller HDB flat. Details such as the absence of skirting along the walls help give a sense of length to the walls and the intricate play of colours to give space without sacrificing style is perhaps what differentiates a successful design project from just an acceptable one.
