Article : Linear Minimalism

Photography Tan Jian Xiong Text Edgar Kieu

Within the peacefully quiet estate along Minaret Walk this corner terrace offers an eclectic blend of a minimalist flavour with a dash of contemporary style. Designer Adrian worked with the family to capture the minimalist flavour that is much in demand of late and melding it with the functionality and finesse of a intimately decorated living space.

The living room features many clean cut lines with coloured glass to highlight and complement the sleek plasma TV. Concealed lights add a diffuse glow in the evening and spotlights highlight specific design elements like the vertical panels of the cupboard. The cheeky red velvet recliner sits at the corner of living room adding a playful juxtaposition to the sharp, clean and sophisticated feel of the other furniture.

The dining area is marked by a long continuous glass framed mirror which serves to increase the natural light by reflecting light from the garden back into the house and also to widen the otherwise narrow space. The dining table follows the design elements of clean and sharp lines while the chandelier above adds that touch of class for that perfect dinner in the evening. The dry serving area is the epitome of cleanliness and functionality with a clear shiny laminate top, perfect for mixing and serving up post dinner cocktails and drinks while subtly demarcating the kitchen area from the dining area.

As we walk up to the second floor, it is not hard to realize how effort has been put in to open up the space in the house. Metal strings pulled taut by cool stainless steel bars replace the otherwise heavy and thick wooden railings, minimizing the use of material. On the second floor landing, we are greeted by a private living space adorned with a wooden display rack and a retro-fabric couch tempts you to sink into its embrace and while your afternoon away, tapping your feet to the tune of light jazz.

Lights
The varying types of lighting in the house from the classy chandelier in the kitchen to the quirky retro styled lights in the children's room to the Gothic chandelier help distinguish each room from another and further provides a centerpiece and counterpoint to the design of the room.

Layers
The layered design elements immediately draw one's attention to how clean and sleek the design is. From the horizontal lines of the third floor master bedroom to the careful and prudent use of space in the walk in wardrobe to the colorful elements of tiles in the children's bathroom, we see how careful balance and layering helps to give each room its individualism without deviating from the original design concept.

Variety
IIn the quest to maintain thematic consistency throughout the house, it is important to remember that functionality and individual preferences need not be sacrificed to fulfill this requirement. This corner terrace helps exemplify how each room in the house, for example the toilets, can show variety of styles yet on the whole maintain its thematic consistency from the first to the third floor.

The second floor master bedroom is actually two rooms combined into one, giving the owner the full space of a room with the other room being converted into a walk in wardrobe and a toilet, hidden behind a full solid wood panel. The TV console and other digital entertainment systems' wires are carefully tucked behind the wooden panel while the elevated drawers provide adequate storage space for any games and other CDs the owner has. The cozy woody colors of the room coupled with the layered wooden blinds which take the place of curtains and the minimalist art at the bed frame give the bedroom a hotel like feel. The spacious walk in wardrobe which leads to the bathroom is compartmentalized with the apt use of closet organizers which allow space management through layering.

This three story corner terrace illustrates the complexity of design required to cater to the needs of the discerning homeowner and yet it never fails to deliver on its original design concept of a minimalist contemporary style, even down to minute details of fine lines and textures to the brilliant use of lighting to emphasize the space.
