  1. I think you can consider making the top part to be those window panel type which allow much better ventilation.

As for the door, louvre type will also help to increase ventilation.

    Hope this help.

Thanks Songz! I'm also looking into air curtains.

These are the thoughts so far,

    Make the room larger

Don't build a ceiling to floor closet.and leave the wall open at the top

Aircon will be shared between both spaces in the night and there'll also be a fan to circulate the cool air

If I use the air curtain, I can leave a bedroom door open at night when the a/c is on and the air curtain can help prevent hot air from coming in.

  2. I will touch up on the edges when my lights from tb are fixed (they are still on their way to sg) as I will need to touch up on the ceilings again! But its pretty fun! My hard work!

TB lights! Please review them if you can. I plan to buy mine from there too. Need to find ways of cutting costs.

  3. Don't you need to have a storeroom for those rarely used items e.g. luggauge?

Maybe u can try out what Apple1's friend did by asking your helper to share the room with one of your kids (with the folding door concept)?

I plan to put the cabin size luggage at the top of the closets and leave the larger ones at my mum's place. They really will be rarely used now that everything has to go into renovation!

  4. I love that colour!! Before, when I painted our rooms, I would buy painter's tape, and tape out the edges that I did not want to bleed into. After the paint dried, I peel the tape off. It is A LOT of work though and it killed my shoulders. AND the tape wasn't cheap. Truth be told, only I could tell where I missed.

I did not notice your edge as the colour drew my attention first :) Great job!

  5. 1 suggestion - One of my friend installed a folding wall/door in her daughter's bedroom. As her daughter sleep in aircon room and the maid doesn't like aircon, the area created for the maid is right next to the windows in the daughter's room. During daytime, the folded doors are flip all the way open creating 1 big open space. At night, the maid closes it to create her own space. It was such a very neat arrangement that we did not know there's 2 areas until she showed me.

This is a great idea! I'm looking into it as I type!

  6. Yep, it is exactly as it sounds like. I sat down with her and said that she was welcome to share our room space for as long as she wanted. She is sleeping with all three kiddos at the moment. I can't buy a place that has an extra room. The 5 rooms were out of my budget. There was no recess to be bought with this particular unit. Those are justifications for sure. She asked about the room and I said I'll have to thinking about how to make it work because of the lack of ventilation. She'll still be hanging her clothes in our rooms but the storage below the bed would give her some storage space.

Still, your point is a valid point and this is why i asked for feedback.

  7. The room that I'm most troubled by is the store room. I would like to convert it into my helper's room but there is no way of adding more ventilation. I can make it cheery but I think air is more important, no?! I ate a little into one room and I'm thinking whether to take some from the master bedroom too.

Anyway. I have a couple of thoughts and will ask the contractor if there is any way of filtering air in there. I wanted to add an a/c but are there System 5? And will she be too cold?

I would like to construct a platform bed so that the bottom can still be used for storage. Have a farm door so that the top can be opened. A wall fan (but I.m not sure how much help that would be)

  8. No real plans for the bedrooms except that I'll need built it closets. One room will have an old timey spidey wall while the other will just be based on his favourite colours and a few video game accents. I've already purchased the mural to put on the wall. I'll paint the buildings grey with yellow lights scattered around. Spidey will swing in from the corner. I generally do not like character themes so that's about all they'll get!

For the master bedroom, I hope to put wall sconces like this. Already have some in mind from taobao.

  9. I'm also including the look I hope to achieve for the kitchen. Hope to find those lovely blue tiles too! Anybody seen them?

Would like to add shelves above the sink/cooktop area to disply pretty crockery. Will not be doing high shelves as I don't want to block the light

    Overall dining/kitchen feel

    kitchen backsplash moroccan tile

    Shelves above cooktop/sink area

Also, I plan to build a little something for the washing machine for a more finished look.

  10. I welcome your suggestions and thoughts! This isn't an exhibition blog. I want to document the journey and to get feedback from reno gurus!

Here are some ideas for the living room where you see the island and dining table combo. Island will be custom built (by contractor yet to be chosen) but dining table will be purchased (possibly from taobao)

    love love this combo

  11. Like many of you, I have finally started on my own renovation journey (break out into nervous dance)

Ok...I'm jumping the gun as the OTP was only just signed. Key exchange wouldn't be for another 4.5 months as the current owner needs an extra month for his move out.

Here's the low-down. Purchased this resale 4A unit after one viewing, the second day it was listed. I wasn't even there when it all went down! I sent other family members to get their impression of it and they said "Take it!" and so I did! Just like that, I will soon be in mortgage debt! I think we should all wear badges of pride for our bravery!

  12. That is a restful place! The expansive walk-in is indeed drool worthy!

Any idea how long do you need to change the duster thing ?

Is it once everytime you use ?

Hi Songz, I do change it each time because they will be covered in dust (In my case at least). If it is very light dusting, I wouldn't change it. you'll know what I mean when you see it. You can't shake the dust off the duster.

  13. hey no problem, glad that we can help each other out in this small way.

thanks in return for the links to the swiffer duster (awesome reviews btw) and Mr Clean magic eraser; my wife will love the duster to bits, and I won't have to worry about our future kid drawing on our walls - in fact, it may be something to be encouraged! ;)

I'm glad to contribute too :) I checked and found this other link also on Amazon. It appears to be for 3 starter kits! Much cheaper!

  14. Thank you vicx and oceaneleven on sharing your shipping costs! I will definitely bear in mind what you said about table vendors!

I'm glad someone asked about the blinds. I'm leaning towards venetian blinds too. Something else to add to why I might choose blinds. In a 4rm, I notice that the windows come right up to the wall. My master bedroom will only have 2 panels of windows. If I were to use traditional curtains, I lose light even if I have the curtains pulled open to the side i.e. the curtains will have to cover the windows just because there is no where else to go.

Wonderful rundown on art! I am all for the support of local artists :)

I've seen these cleaners/dusters here but they cost a bomb! I'll be getting these from Amazon and will check TB. I used the heck out of them previously when I was in the US and doing my own house cleaning.

They also sell refills and will buy them at the same time. Great for tops of fans and for blinds.

Those of us with white walls and young budding Picassos at home, I recommend Mr Clean Magic Eraser. Once again, I buy them in bulk from Amazon. Really expensive at Cold Storage. I've used them on coloured walls too.

  15. Hello!

Great job on your renovation! Having settled in, do you have any feedback to share about your flooring and laminate feature wall? Ingenious by the way!

Do you happen to remember how much you paid for the shipping of your desk from Taobao? I'm intending to purchase a larger size table to go at the end of our kitchen island. Is the table holding up? This is the one I'm looking at. The 180x70 size.

I read through but must have missed the psf cost of the flooring (both living room and kitchen). Can I trouble you to share that too? **(SORRY! Shown in your pictures! Blind as a bat!)**

Sorry for all the questions and Thanks!

p/s congrats on becoming a dad! I have 3 boys and that's why we are looking for hardier floors :)

  16. Hey, thanks for sharing this website. I checked it out and they sell really gorgeous stuff! Too bad some of the rugs are not shipped internationally yet. :(

    What did you buy??

I love that store...I bought the yellow owl butter dish. My friend loves owls and I bought it as a gift. Could not resist it so I bought the coral coloured one for myself. $8 each but with shipping, I paid $40! But oh so cute. Not sure how big a rug you are looking for...try overstock.com too

  17. What I love about your place are the small punches of colour. I like this idea for your brick wall (not a big poster but smaller pieces):

    domino+black+and+white+living+room+whitewashed+brick+wall+eclectic+mix+of+frames.jpg

You can even make this a weekend project. Collecting interesting frames and painting them yourselves. I think they would make nice conversational pieces.
