  1. Hi,

My cousin is asking me for help regarding the installation of security system for her 2.5 storey terrace. Her electrician recommend a company doing CCTV and security system.

They recommended 7 CCTV cameras (HikVision, UniFi) with NVR video recorder with 14TB HDD. Total cost between $3500 to $5500.

I have some experiences in installing internet cctv for my hdb home and  father's shop and hence she asked me. I remember setting up 4 cameras and it records 24/7 using a computer. Cost is only a few hundreds using an old PC which is already there. But I have no experience in the installation of security system for her 2.5 storey terrace.

I thought that nowaday with so many internet cctv, it should be quite simple and cheap. I wonder if the recommended setup is an overkill for a terrace, or is this quite standard?

    Can someone advise?

    Thanks!

  2. Hi, my relative is getting her house renovated. Her ID told her to get a licensed electrician to do the electrical work. We checked around and it seems that some electricians we checked are licensed, while some are not.

it seems that there a 3 types of licences - electrician, electrical technician and electrical engineer.

I only found a related post here:

    https://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/282-electrical-work-cost/page/16/?tab=comments#comment-580595

but that was 10 yrs+ ago.

So has things changed? How impt is it to get a licensed one vs an unlicensed one? Will insurance be affected?

    Thanks!

  3. Hi,

I need to install a fan speed control as my exhaust fan in the toilet is too loud. However, I am not able to get it working. In my socket, I have 3 live, 3 neural and 3 ground wires. May I know why this is so in the 1st place?

Next I have attached the circuit diagram of the controller switch. but how should I connect? there's 1 to 4 where I can connect. It's stated that 1 and 4 are L (live). So I tried conecting 2 live wires to 1 and 1 live wire to 4.

It can't work. So I place 2 neural wires to 3 to 1 neural wire to 2. Also can't work.

    Any idea?

    Thanks.

  4. Hi,

My ktichen cabinets are rather old (~20yrs) but they still look ok, with some stains, but no visible dent or scratches. However, one of our family members wants to change the color to something else. There are abt 10 doors, each approx 60x40cm.

If I'm not wrong, these are laminated cabinets, although I'm not too sure. I have attach some pictures.

I read in the forum that I could paint or laminate. I am quoted $400 for the painting. Is that considered cheap?

Since we are still staying in the same house, I wonder when we can use the kitchen for cooking again. All the utensils have to be removed, quite troublesome.

I am considering of using those odour less paint. If so, can I use the kitchen after a week?

For laminates, is it worth to buy online and DIY? I saw some nice designs on taobao. Just cut and stick. Wonder if they will last.

    Thanks in advance.

  5. Hi,

I have got a D/U shaped toilet bowl and I need to replace its seat with a 2 in 1 kid +adult family toilet seat, so that my kid can use it. The online and retail shops I saw in S'pore only sells the seat for the oval shaped toilet bowl.

Does anyone know where I can get one for the D/U shaped toilet bowl? I have attached a picture of my toilet bowl.

    Thanks

  6. Hi,

I need some recommendation regarding my bathroom glass window. It was modified from the previous owner abt 2 yrs ago. The top edge is connected to the false wall thru silicon. Once in a while, we close the glass door a bit hard, causing some damage to the top edge. It is now a bit loose, maybe can move +/- 0.5 cm. However, the side and bottom of the glass window are still well attached, no problem.

However, my wife is worried that the glass window will fall out. Is it possible? Should I get a contractor to repair? Or I'm thinking of using some 90deg connector to secure both sides of the top edge. I wonder if it is enough.

Anyone can give some recommendations? Thanks.

  7. Hi,

today my water heater suddenly can't be switched on - no light from neon indicator and heater as well. Last time, it happen once or twice but I tried to switch off and on and it worked. But this time it can't work.

How can I know if it's the switch that has problem or the water heater?

When I unscrew the switch, I found that one of the led black wires has came off. The other black wire is still attached to the top left hole (L2). Btw, mine is the CK CK200N water heater switch

1st of all, is it possible that the water heater can't be switch on if the led black wires came off?

2ndly, I tried to attach the wire which came off to each of the other 3 holes. Attaching to the bottom left hole (L1) works, with the neon indicator lightning up when I switch on - but sadly, the water heater doesn't switch on.

    So anyone can help?

    Thanks!

  9. Hi,

I am using the water heater of the prev house owner. Not sure how long but the model is still in the market - Ariston INOX AA25 http://www.ariston.com/sg/Inox_AA-25

Problem is the water is only hot for 5min, previously it was like > 15min.

Check online and most suggested it could be one of the heating coil problem, or too much sediments in the heater.

Does anyone know electrician or plumber who check and repair water heaters?

Seems like most only help to install...

    Thanks!

  10. I got this problem too. Later realised it is WC's pan collar problem, as described by Brainstorm.

At 1st, the ID told me it's due to the neighbour below, ask me to pour bleach into the drain pipe. No use. HDB guys came, also no use. Then a contractor told me to cover all the drain pipes holes. Stuff with wet cloth and seal it as much as possible. This is to identify where the smell come from. Cover all pipes still got smell ... so the culprit must be the toilet bowl. Finally ID asked his contractor to remove and redo the toilet bowl again. Two month of foul smell finally gone!

  11. Hi,

    I had a sys3 (3 bedrooms) + sys1 (living) from prev owner. It's about 10yr old.

Now thinking of changing my sys3 to sys2. My pipes are concealed and I have moved in for a yr already.

Wife thinks it's safer to change to new pipes, else later got problem. But some aircon guys who came to check says can use back existing pipes.

So anyone has recommendation whether to change or not? I'm not sure what type of pipes was installed 10 yrs ago...

  12. Hi Chris,

    I need to get either:

    Sys2 aircon, 2x9000btu (bedrooms) or

    Sys2 aircon, 1x9000btu + 1x12000btu (bedrooms) or

    Sys3 aircon, 1x12000btu + 1x18000btu (bedroom + living)

Looking at Mitsubishi Heavy (SCM45ZJ-S1,SRK25ZMA-S) since it's the only one with 4 ticks for power saving. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    Previously I had a sys3 (3 bedrooms) + sys1 (living).

I am also considering of changing the old pipes. Some parts are concealed. Do you provide cutting of the holes and patching up? Maybe you need to come and take a look.
