  1. Griffindor, are u looking to install or have already installed those windows? I started this thread, but procrastinated. Now looking anew at installing those windows. Pls share ur experience as well. I'm getting quotes from quite a few sites i found thru google. Hope they come back with prices that are reasonable. Pls add on if u have other contacts :)

So, have you spoken to Louis' contact? I agree. I've stayed a little bit in europe and the quality of their furnishing and fittings are way way better than Singapore's. The windows are not only double-glazed but also has three different ways of opening. I have no idea why singapore being so noisy and hot has such lousy windows fitted. Don't tell me the flats are cheap. They are anything but that.

  2. You can google for info on laminated glass and noise reduction/sound insulation.

Or take a read of the technical bulletin here:

    http://www.pilkington.com/products/bp/bybenefit/noisecontrol/optiphon/default.htm

Double glazing, which is the term commonly used for a glazing of 2 layers of glass separated by an air gap, is more for heat insulation. For sound insulation, the air gap must be big, like 6 cm or more.

Laminated glass is usually 2 sheets sandwiching a layer of PVB and is more effective in reducing sound. It gets more effective when you use glass of different thickness.

Its not just about the glass. You have to pay attention to the whole window system -- any gaps? how tightly secured?

You can try Fascina. They are one of the more known ones. You can also engage the usual window makers who are cheaper, but you'll probably have to specify what you want and won't be able to really rely on them for advice. Then there are the smaller, more boutique type of businesses. They have good engineering and can cost anything from in between Fascina and the mass market manufacturers to way above Fascina.

unfortunately Facina only does private housing, not HDB flats.

  3. Main purpose of double glazing is to reduce heat. It will also cut the noise. But if your main purpose is to cut noise, should consider laminated glass instead. Get it with the 2 sheets of glass at different thickness. More effective.

How does laminated glass reduce noise?

Any good contractor with reasonable prices to recommend?

  4. Hi huazai,

Are we able to change the windows at the corridor. I tot 9orridor windows can only be sliding not casement. Can enligten?

Dunno, Pang Giap says they can get the necessary HDB approval.

Bravoglass is now quoting $280/sqm for double glaze + extra for frames. Still awaiting final quote.

  5. Just for my info, what are the benefits of double glazing? I thought mainly to prevent heat to escape, which I defnitely wanted in winter overseas but not in Singapore? Another reason was maybe soundproofing. Is it for security reasons?

to reduce noise coming in from heavy traffic in front of my room :)

  6. H155cm, L295cm.

Will send u a PM for their contact.

Hmmm.. I believe double glazing window has recently just started to heat up. However, in Europe, the standard is already at triple glazing.

How long is the length of your corridor windows? I happened to know of a company who specialized in glass work. The company is quite well known in Europe and have taken up quite a number of projects here in Singapore.

You might want to try your luck with them? In addition, I heard that they are starting a production line to bring in a new product to Singapore, which they call it the "Switchable Glass", whereby this glass is using power supply to control its visibility just like our LRT where it can be opaque or totally transparent with a control of a switch. I'm not sure about the price thought but no harm giving them a call.

Do PM me for their contact if you intend to look for them. =)

  7. Anyone did double glaze windows before?

I'm trying to find a few more contractors for quotes. Hoping the folks here can give some recommendations!

I got a $3400 quote from Pang Giap for my corridor windows, but it seems they are getting bad reviews on this forum!

  8. Thanks for the link, good advice.

Got the Sealy San Marino (single size) in the end, from Robinsons $1599 in all (1 free pillow, 2 free protectors) with 0% 12 month installment on Robinsons card.

Still need to factor in the robinsons 4+% rebate of course.

13 inches, comfy when i tested it, hopefully worth the trouble of finding sheets that will fit the thickness.

    UP: $2399.

$500+$200 off with recent promotion, so $1699 after official discount.

Extra $100 off after bargaining, sales person said it's usual for them to give $100 off for robinsons card customers.

    Final price $1599.

Sales person is Terence, from the Centrepoint Robinsons Bedshop.

Putting this out there for all folks' reference.

Do let me know if anyone out there got the bed cheaper, then i can go and cbcb and get more discount :D

    cheers!

  9. Hi Ihuazai

If I would only to choose between the two; Mayfair. I love the plushness of Sealy pillowtop.

However, before we go any further; may I refer you to

"How to cut through the marketing gimmicks of Sealy, Serta, and the rest. "

After much consideration; I ended up spending about $2k for a Queen-size KingKoil latex top pocketed mattress.

If you insist on Sealy; consider Saphhire from Harvey Norman at Millenium Walk.

Thanks for the link, good advice.
