  2. Hey guys, I am here to share my experience working with Singapore Carpentry. I have heard a lot of horror stories regarding renovation so I was sceptical about finding a good interior designer, to say the least. A friend of mine recommended me to this company and helped me to get an appointment with Ernest Tan. He was very patient with me and really listened to the concerns I had regarding this process. He explained how the whole renovation process works, the approximate duration it would take and give me a range of how much this whole renovation would cost. I showed him the kind of style I wanted my home to be like and passed him my floor plan and a couple of days later he sent me a sketch of my home (Landed property: Living room, Kitchen, Dining room, 4 Bedrooms) and I was sold. I signed the contract a week after that and it was the best decision I’ve made for my new home. He sent me a more detailed 3D sketch subsequently and everything was a breeze from there. Ernest handled everything from start to finish (plumbing, electrical wiring, tiling, ceiling etc were all in-house services so he arranged everything). There were a couple of hiccups here and there with contractors (there was a delay from contractors doing false ceiling and so the other work like tiling etc had to be delayed as well) but Ernest was on site to handle all these matters personally and made sure that there would be no delay on the dateline that was given to me (12 weeks). I was impressed with Ernest regarding this specific occasion. So I spoke to a few other IDs regarding this particular concern I had and all but Ernest told me he would make it work. I wanted to convert my backyard from what was plain and empty into one where my family could lounge around and relax in. All the IDs told me they couldn’t do this work at the budget I was willing to set aside, but Ernest made that possible for me. He really helped me cut cost where he could and advised me on certain materials that I could substitute so it still serves the purpose without expanding a hole in my pocket. Another thing I need to highlight is their carpentry work. They handle these services in-house, so it's much cheaper than what you get outside for the same quality and workmanship, so I really recommend this service if you are looking for one. I got all my cabinets done by them for kitchen, wardrobe etc and everyone comments on how sleek they look. The whole renovation work took slightly less than 11 weeks. My wife and I are very pleased with the end results, so we really recommend this company. Anyone interested in engaging them can contact my designer, Ernest Tan at 81004193.

  8. Confused by all the different bed/mattress size standards out there on the market? Read this before you buy. The word ‘bed’ refers to two things: 1. The mattress 2. The bed frame The phrase ‘bed size’ refers to the mattress size – not the size of the bed frame. There are a variety of different bed size standards for mattresses, which are as follows: Singapore Mattress Sizes King : W 183cm x L 190 cm Queen: W 152cm x L 190cm Super Single: W 107cm x L 190cm Single: W 91cm x L 190cm Twin: W 99cm x L 191cm European Mattress Sizes King: W 180cm x L 200cm Queen: W 160cm x L 200cm Double: W 140cm x L 200cm Single: W 90cm x L 200cm North American Mattress Sizes King: W 193cm x L 203cm California King: W 183cm x L 213cm Queen: W 152cm x L 203cm Full Size: W 135cm x L188cm Twin/XL Size: W 99cm x L 203cm Australian Mattress Sizes King: W 183cm x L 203cm Queen: W 153cm x L 203cm Double: W 137cm x L 187cm Single: W 92cm x L 187cm Most mattresses sold in Singapore are made according to the standard Singaporean mattress sizes, but don’t be afraid to clarify which type it is if you’re not sure. The reason why so many different sizing standards exist is because mattresses made in different regions are sized according to the average person’s height in the respective region…and Singaporeans are simply shorter in general. We’ve covered mattress sizes – this’ll be important when it comes to buying bed frames. When you shop for beds, the dimensions given often refer to the bed frame itself, not the mattress it will fit. This means that not all Queen sized mattresses will fit a Queen size bed. Take care not to buy a bed that won’t accommodate your mattress simply because its dimensions are smaller than those of your mattress. --EDITED-- The dimensions of the bed frame are: W172cm x D205cm x H120cm. The specifications for Queen Sized mattresses in the different regions are: European Queen-Sized Mattress - W 160cm x L 200cm North American Queen-Sized Mattress - W 152cm x L 203cm Australian Queen-Sized Mattress - W 153cm x L 203cm The three Queen size mattresses above look like they might fit into the Hana Queen Bed because they have smaller/equal dimensions, but they won’t. Singapore Queen-Sized Mattress - W 152cm x L190cm The Hana Queen Bed is explicitly designed for Singaporean Queen mattresses only. Therefore, never assume the dimensions of the bed are synonymous with the dimensions of the mattress it will fit when shopping for a bed frame. Now you finally understand what that “California King Bed” Rihanna sang about actually is. Happy bed shopping! --EDITED--
  9. One of the biggest fears people may have about natural stone is the maintenance it requires. With many individuals increasingly turning to the use of natural materials in the home, granite has become the countertop of choice. Synthetic solid surface materials are no match for the richness, depth, and incredible performance of real granite. Unlike laminates and solid-surface materials, a hot pot or frying pan has no effect on granite’s mirror-like finish. Most importantly, by choosing a granite countertop you not only give your kitchen everlasting performance and beauty, but you also increase the value of your home. Granite is also a very hard mineral and is virtually impervious to abrasions, impact damage and heat. However, the material is prone to cracking due to mechanical stresses caused by repeated heating and cooling. While the seams in between slabs provide some leeway for this repeated expansion and contraction, it is best to keep granite away from sources of large heat fluctuations. You’ll find caring for your natural stone is easy. The best care you can give your natural stone is preventive care. By following a few suggestions, your countertops will last a lifetime while maintaining a brand-new appearance. BASIC CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE 1. AVOID USING CLEANING PRODUCTS WITH ANY KIND OF ACID OR ABRASIVE. Avoid using harsh cleaning agents that contain strong acids/alkaline (e.g. bleach, glass cleaners, ammonia, degreasers) or abrasives (e.g. powdered ceramic/bathroom cleaners) as it can cause the sealant to discolour and scratch. Warm water, mild dishwashing liquid, and soft clean cloth are generally all that’s needed to maintain your granite countertop surface. 2. AVOID SUBJECTING YOUR GRANITE COUNTERTOP TO HEAVY WEIGHTS AND PRESSURE. While hard, granite surfaces are brittle and you should not stand, kneel on, sit or stack heavy objects onto your countertops as they could crack or break. This doesn’t mean that granite is fragile, however, and it’s perfectly capable of supporting microwaves, dish holders and other moderately heavy objects. 3. DO NOT PLACE HOT PANS OR OTHER OBJECTS DIRECTLY ON YOUR COUNTERTOPS. Again, hot objects can cause the sealant to discolour (mainly in dark granites) and/or cracking. Always use a protective barrier between any hot object and granite such as trivet or mat. Unsealed granite countertops do not have this problem, but are highly porous and come with other problems. 4. WIPE OFF SPILLS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. Sealed granite countertops are surprisingly resilient to stains from citric acid, coffee tea, alcohol, or wine. However, as a preventive measure, wipe up any spills on the countertops within a reasonable amount of time and do not let liquid sit on the countertop overnight. 5. Watch out for oil stains. Granite is most prone to staining by oil – be careful not to place any pots or frying pans with oil traces on the bottom on the countertop surface. Blot oil and acid spills as soon as they happen, and clean with mild soap and warm water to avoid any harm to your countertops. If the oil stains remain, there is a special cleaning procedure for the removal of deep-seated, time-set dirt and grime. A general poultice with baby or baking soda and water is the best remedy. First, moisten the surface of the granite with the same liquid that made the paste. Next, apply the poultice paste to the granite surface about half an inch thick. Tape plastic sheeting over the poultice area, and allow it to sit for 48 hours. Remove the poultice with a spatula, rinse the cleansed area with clean water, wipe off excess water, and allow the surface to dry. 6. RINSE SOAP AND WASHING DETERGENTS OFF TO PREVENT LIME BUILD UP. Rinse with hot clean water on a regular basis and use a paper towel to dry. Another way to remove lime build up , soap scum, stains or dried spills, is to use a straight razor blade in a gentle scraping motion. Do not use lime removal products or cleaning products that contain ammonia, as this will affect the seal on the stone. 7. AVOID HITTING THE SURFACE WITH HARD OBJECTS. Chips in granite are not a common occurrence. When they do happen, chips are most often caused by banging something into the edge of the countertop. Take care when you handle heavy pots and pans around your granite profiles as these are the most prone to cause chipping. If a chip does occur and you find the piece that chipped out, hold on to it. Most of the time it can be epoxied back into place. 8. APPLY SEALERS. The use of sealers is an excellent preventive measure and will encourage the preservation of your granite countertops. Some granite can be very porous. Sealers fill in natural pores and repel spills on the surface, radically reducing the rate of absorption. This gives you time to wipe spills away before they have a chance to penetrate your stone. After the installation process, the granite must be sealed. We recommend a re-application of this sealer annually, or more often for some light granites, to fully maintain the luminosity and avoid stains. Some dark-colored, dense granites (browns, blacks) do not require sealing. When the water or liquid spilled on your countertop fails to bead up when splashed, or you begin to notice a water darkening spot that dries out, this is an indication that your countertop needs to be re-sealed. 9. AVOID STORING CHEMICALS ON THE SURFACE. It’s risky to store chemicals on the surface of your granite countertop in case of spillage. This includes cooking oil, hair products, chemical cleaners and cosmetics.
  10. Stone suppliers in Singapore carry a wide range of kitchen tops. From natural stone like granite, marble and sandstone to solid surface kitchen tops and engineered quartz stone, each type of stone has its advantages and disadvantages depending on the desired aesthetic tastes and functionality. So how do you choose the right thickness for your countertop? There are several types of kitchen countertop stones which have their own physical characteristics. Depending on each homeowner’s individual lifestyle and expectations, different types of stone would work best. Today, we’ll take a look at the different thicknesses of countertops in production, their advantages and disadvantages. 10-13MM, OR ABOUT 1/2 INCH COUNTERTOPS. One of the first questions you’ll be asked by a stone supplier is the thickness you want. While thicker stones are preferred for their dramatic but minimalist look especially for natural stone or quartz, thin countertops have several advantages that any smart homeowner should consider carefully. THINNER AND LIGHTER. The biggest advantage that thin, 10-13mm countertops provide is lightness. Gravity does nasty things to a heavy slab that’s hanging off a surface, and trying to fasten it vertically would be a technical impossibility without special support systems in place. In many applications where the slabs hang freely and unsupported, excessive weight would jeopardize the structural integrity of the piece if special load-bearing or anchoring system is not in place. They are also much easier to work with and handle and do not require eight people just to move a slab from the ground floor up to your place. Stone Italiana Quartz carries exceptional 13mm quartz kitchen tops in three types of finishes; polished, rock face and grain. FLOATING COUNTERS, WATERFALL EDGES AND MORE. Thin countertops are a lot lighter than thick slabs, which makes it possible to build special applications. These include vertical surfaces such as feature walls, fuller backsplashes and waterfall edges. The sides of a kitchen island is a good example where waterfall edges have a nice touch. Thin slabs also make it possible to build floating counters where they are minimally supported by a foundation. Thin and light countertop slabs are also easier to cut and shape, which lends its suitability to integration work such as installation of a kitchen sink. If necessary, thin slabs can be laminated around a lightweight core material such as wood. This makes the countertop thicker without adding too much weight. 20-30MM, 1 TO 1 ¼ THICK COUNTERTOPS. MORE DURABLE Although heavier, more expensive and less versatile, thicker countertops are more durable than lighter ones; 30mm slabs are less prone to breaking compared to 20mm slabs, which in turn are more durable than 13mm ones. Countertops come in slabs as thick as 40mm or 60mm, but are often too expensive and too heavy for most homes to support. Soft stone such as marble and sandstone benefit significantly from the extra thickness. BUILT TO LAST AND CARRY HEAVIER LOADS. Thick kitchen top stones also last longer, which makes up for the difficult installation and high initial cost. Thick slabs of high-quality stone, especially when well-installed, also bring with it a nice hike in equity value, which alone is enough reason for stone suppliers in Singapore to recommend them. Thicker slabs are also best suited whenever high traffic/usage is expected, and a special emphasis on durability is required; e.g. kitchen tables, bathroom vanities, grilling stations (hard, natural stone like granite provide the best heat resistance), shower seats, decorative cutting boards and coffee tables. MORE KITCHEN TOP EDGE PROFILING OPTIONS. In addition, the extra material provided by thicker countertops gives homeowners more options for kitchen top edge profiling and fashions. You cannot cut deep curves into thin laminated countertops without biting into the laminated core. Edge profiles aren’t just for aesthetic purposes. For safety reasons, many interior designers and home owners opt for the bullnose edge profile, which is not something you want to accidentally hit.

  14. Recently I bought a couple of Metalclad 13A sockets from CCM.However,I see disparity between the listed models in the CCM(and also other Singapore distributors,so it is not CCM's fault) and the official MK site.On page 3 of the catalog of the Metalclad plus in the CCM website, the switched 13A and 15A sockets, and the rocker switches have SKUs that start with "G" instead of "K".These "G" series look different from the "K" series that is officially on the MK website. For example,on the SG distributer's pdf,the model of 2 gang 13A BS1363 socket is "G2946 ALM".However,on the official MK site, the model number is "K2946 ALM".The models have substantial differences such as the "G" version have narrower plastic edges around the socket holes, narrower rocker switch, only 1 earth connection at the back instead of 2 on the "K" series. The safety mark sticker also looks somewhat dubious(look like low quality sticker).Googling "G" series does not provide much information either.May I know the reason for the different models, where the "G" series are made in,and also where to get the "K" variants in Singapore. Thanks for any information about the matter. PS I see the "G" series installed on the void deck of HDB,but on Circle Line MRT stations,"K" series with red rockers are used.On a corridor on Jurong Point, there are also an MK Albany Plus socket installed on the wall with a more trust-able safety mark sticker on the top left.

  17. Can anyone advise me on the minimum Expected Salary for an Entry-level Interior designer?
  18. Hi everyone! My name is Jonah and I'm the principal photographer for All Aflutter (http://tobuildahome.sg); note that the website is still under construction and we're still uploading content to it. A quick FAQ on our project: What is To Build A Home (TBAH)? TBAH is a photography and videography project under the SG50 Celebration Fund that documents fresh home-owners moving into their homes for the first time. We want to show the customs and traditions that accompany the move-in as a way to engage and educate the audience, as well as highlight Singapore's rich melting pot of cultures and ethnicities. As a new home-owner myself, I was very intrigued by the intricate customs performed during the move-in, which I didn't know about until I was gently educated by my elders (mother-in-law, really), and I thought that it would be something very intriguing and unique to Singapore. I wanted to explore the meaning and significance of those customs. Who can join? Anyone who is moving into a new home - we don't want to limit it to only young, married couples moving into their new flat, but also explore Singaporeans of every stripe. We want to tell stories that highlight the diversity of our cultures and present the meaning behind the customs and traditions practiced by people moving into their homes for the first time. Instead of a nostalgic type of project, we want to do something that is forward-looking instead Do I have to pay anything? Short answer - no. As we're partially funded by MCCY under the Fund, there won't be any monetary costs on your end if you would like to participate. We would do a pre-interview together with you and your partner, and find out a little more about you and your new home. If needed, we'll arrange a meeting, probably at your new place, to discuss the shoot in detail and fill you in on what's going to be involved. We'll tag along on your official move-in date (when you would carry out the customs or traditions, such as throwing of the pineapple, to name one) and document the process, and do a few portraits along the way as well! What do I get from this project? We'll put together a little memento from the shoot - such as a portrait photo print - and any digital images we would take from the shoot. If you want some photos of your pristine home with all your lovely decor and furniture, just let us know and we can provide them for you as well. I'm in! Where do I start? You can send an email to jean.goh@allaflutter.sg or call me at 9726-1-726 to indicate your interest, and we'll get things started from there. We can also show you documentation/proof of our official appointment and approval by MCCY to show that we're not scammers or upselling you stuff you don't want or need. We look forward to hearing from you! Jonah Sun Principal Photographer All Aflutter

  25. It's finally my turn to share my happiness here after a year's worth of lurking around in Renotalk. After working for 40 few years, LB (老伴, Husband) decided that it's probably time for us to move and have a dream home to retire in. Now tell me how to contain my excitement! So far we're having all the luck, our journey to find a new home & ID came really fast&easy. Chop chop! The COV for this resale EM was within our budget, the view from the balcony seems to be not bad (Fresh air - 10th level) and we see the possibilities in transforming it to our desired living space! LB & I are high in spirits but apparently our bodies aren't really cooperative enough for us to visit every ID firms in Singapore. Believe us, if we could, we would! (Kiasu, Kiasi) So LB&I agreed on an ID referred by my friend lor, sweet and easy. Ps:// I've spent the couple of days forcing my grandson to teach me on how to post here. Muahaha, I must be the most irritating grandma ever.
