  1. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQS) ON TAOIST FUNERAL DO TAOISTS BURY OR CREMATE THE DECEASED? The traditional Chinese Taoists bury their dead, but they do not cremate them. The reason is because Taoists believe that the soul does not die when the body does. Therefore, the soul can continue to exist in another realm after the body has decayed. If the body is cremated first, the soul will be unable to return to its proper place and will wander the earth lost and confused. WHAT DOES A TAOIST PRIEST DO AT A FUNERAL? At the beginning of a Taoist funeral, the priest performs an ancestral rites. Next, he chants sutras and invokes the gods, as well as the necessary rituals to help the soul of the deceased leave the physical world and find its way back home to Heaven or Paradise. After that, he offers incense and libations to the deceased’s ancestors and the gods. WHAT IS THE RITUAL THAT A TAOIST PRIEST PERFORMS AT A FUNERAL? The priest first offers incense and libations to the deceased’s ancestors and the gods. Next, he lights an eternal lamp. He then makes an offering of food and wine to the spirits of the dead. After that, he anoints the body of the deceased with essential oils and herbs. These oils and herbs are said to have a rejuvenating effect on the deceased. They are also said to cleanse the air in the room where the ceremony is taking place. After that, the priest recites a sutra which purifies the room and the atmosphere. Then, the priest leads all the mourners in a lamentation. This is done to cleanse the air in the room and the atmosphere even more. The priest ends the ritual by leading all the mourners in a chant which helps the deceased’s soul find its way home. WHAT DO YOU WEAR TO A TAOIST FUNERAL? When you are going to a Taoist funeral, you should wear dark colors. Black, gray, brown or navy blue are the most common colors you will see. You should avoid wearing bright colors as they can agitate the spirits of the dead. WHAT DO TAOISTS BELIEVE ABOUT LIFE AFTER DEATH? Taoists believe that after death, the soul remains in a sort of limbo until it is reunited with the body. At that point, the soul is said to be reborn into another physical body. This process of rebirth continues forever. Therefore, the Taoists believe that the only thing that truly ends is the process of rebirth. After that, the soul keeps on being reborn over and over again into new bodies for eternity. DO TAOISTS BELIEVE IN HEAVEN AND ****? Yes. The belief in heaven and **** is very much a part of Taoism. The Taoists believe that there is a heaven for good people (those who lived ethical lives) and a **** for evil people. However, the souls of the “in-betweens” (those who lived lives that were somewhat “gray”) just sort of “hover” around Earth waiting for the next opportunity to be reborn. Heaven is where all the good souls go after they have been purified by their many rebirths. They live eternally in joy and bliss. They are surrounded by beautiful, virtuous people who inspire them to continue to become better and better. They are happy and never ill. They are free from desire and sorrow. They are united with the cosmic source of their being. They are at one with the universe. HOW MANY DAYS IS A TAOIST FUNERAL? A Taoist funeral usually lasts between 3 to 5 days in Singapore. WHAT DO YOU SAY TO THE BEREAVED FAMILY AT A TAOIST FUNERAL? One of the most important things you can do for the grieving family is simply be there for them. Listen to them, give them your undivided attention and don’t try to force them to “get over it” as fast as they can. Give them time and space to grieve in their own way and at their own pace. You can comfort the grieving family with words such as “He/She is in a better place now.” HOW MUCH DOES A TAOIST FUNERAL COST IN SINGAPORE?
