In fact, professionals in the culinary arts recognize 12 regional styles including New York, Chicago, and Detroit. The arrival of pizza in the U.S. is generally attributed to New York’s Lombardi’s in 1905, still in operation today. But newspaper articles as far back as 1903 describe a tomato pie being served by Italian immigrants in Manhattan. And these were the humble origins of the most consumed dish in the United States.
