Restriction On Dogs In Condo?

Recommended Posts

First, to set the record straight, a golden retriever does NOT NEED TO BE MUZZLED. It has to be leashed, yes, just like all other dogs out there. So please don't spout untruths. If you continue to do that, you should be the one muzzled.

Second, I agree that dogs should be leashed. But guess what? Most dogs that you see unleashed are small dogs - and those dog owners continue to have them unleashed. Giving us big dog owners a bad name.

Third, what kind of behaviour are you teaching your daughter? Yes I know children are precious and if I were you, seeing an unleashed dog running towards my girl, I will also be pissed off. But what I'll do is to pick her up and carry her in my arms. And if that dog is aggressive, yes I won't hesitate to let fly my anger at the irresponsible owner. But if the dog is friendly , I'd teach my child to meet the dog properly and play with it. Do you honestly want a daughter that screams in fear and run away (the thing you should NOT do when you see a dog chasing you) when she sees a dog? Do you want your daughter to be a scaredy cat, one that has no respect for animals and instill an ungrounded fear of dogs in her? Or do you want a daughter that has compassion for animals, have a healthy understadning of dogs and animals, treat them with caution, yes, but also with respect?

I find your reaction (posting AVA's website/tel number) extreme and disgusting. Your behaviour when the dog comes running to your girl is justified, but your *thinking behind it (wanting to fly-kick the dog) is disgusting and inhumane. All too often I have seen that it is not the dog that provokes, but the STUPID, uneducated children themselves who provoke my dogs, making stupid barking noises and shouts, while the parents just stare, watching on. Uneducated, disgusting parents, with future uneducated, disgusting children in the making.

Bravo !!! :):P:D

Guys, relax.

We know there are pet owners who will go all out to fight for their pets. We also know that there are people who have had bad experiences with animals.

For dog owners, let's be responsible. Leash our furkids when we're out for walks. If you really want to unleash your dog, bring them to the dogruns. Good chance for them to socialise too.

For non dog owners, please do not assume that all pet owners are irresponsible and that we are out to make life difficult for you. There will still be irresponsible pet owners around no matter what. And do not blame the dogs for being out of control. As I have said before, there are never bad dogs, only bad owners.

Let's just agree to live together in harmony ok? :jammin:

I was chased by a large (at least, to me then it was large) black dog when I was a kid. I was terrified. But today, I have two large dogs which I dearly love. Even if one has been chased/bitten by a dog, it does not mean you have to 'fly-kick' a 'small' dog when one is running towards you?!

To nacho: I'm sorry that this has happened to your condo - I understand your desire to look for a place that accepts dogs (I also house hunted with my dogs in mind and found a cheap landed property). Best bet is for you to speak to the management office, but maybe before that, ask the neighbours with the dogs. If you are sincere and show how good your goldie is, I'm sure they will be reasonable, especially as you bought the condo without knowing of this rule.

You're quite right, especially on the daughter part. I'm not that bad lah away want to kick dog "fly". I'm targeting at irresponsible owners. I have had dogs, cats, rabbits before, I can understand the feeling. Anyway, when dog "charge" toward" you & let it bites? Only then seek medical compensation or start lawsuit is humane? The posting of AVA contact is for info and action if necessary, no ill intention. No "ill" behaviour should not be wary about this.

Dog owners, pls try to see from the perspective of people who are afraid of dogs. It's like people who are griped by fear when they see lizards, cockroaches, etc or for people are afraid of heights. It is difficult to overcome psychological barriers. Hearing these wrods 'dun worry, it will not bite', followed by no further action from the dog owner definitely is not going to help a person who is afraid by dogs, when faced with a dog. What seems perfectly all right to the owner is actually scaring the wits out of the other person! :o

Dog owners are free to let their dogs roam within their private property. But when in public (including common strata areas), dog owners should appreciate that not everyone is comfortable with animals and should keep their dogs on leash. In that way, we will all be able to live harmonously.

In the past, read from the AVA websites that 3 dogs are allowed for pte property. Not sure why the website says subject to individual premises now. anyone has more than 1 dog and face any issues staying in condo with this?

Hi shespawn,

I found this in the AVA website:

Licensing of dogs for residential premises other than HDB premises

For premises other than HDB premises, not more than three dogs are allowed per premises. Special permission must be obtained from AVA to keep more than three dogs.

So I think the "subject to individual premises" is for more than 3 dogs? :dunno:

The wordings "subject to individual premises" is to allow indiviual MCST to decide on their own the limit.

I would suggest that TS ask to see the AGM documents to check how the resoluation was worded and how was it passed at the AGM. In some estate that pass such resolutions, they have provision to allow exisiting owner of such dogs to con't to keep these dogs till the dog pass on and there after they have to abide by the ruling.

I can understand the fear one has about dogs, especially if they were chased or bitten by one before. But for someone who has owned dogs before to react so adversely (fly kick a dog, report to AVA etc etc) towards dogs, is rather contradictorily unfounded fear, isnt it?

The bad publicity of some dogs biting people does not mean ALL dogs will bite. One should not condemn the whole dog populations just because a handful spoil their reputation.

I dont hv to explain the wonderful aspects of dogs (some times better than children!!) to dog owners. We all can identify with that immediately. For those who fear dogs, let me say that dogs generally do NOT harm humans. They will not come to you if you ignore them or not talk to them. Neither will they attack you out of no reason. Just like humans.... we do not talk to people who are not friendly, right? We do not attack people out of the blue too, right? Same logic.

many good owners have good relationships with their dogs. Their dogs are not just one of their 'pets'. Thus, many good well behaved dogs can walk unleased with their owners. There is really no need to react so negatively just because the law 'says so', right? Are we not humans with good reasoning capacity?? How often we find unruly children running around and playing like wild kids in restaurants, MRTs, shopping malls??? Shouldn't there be laws to 'lease them' too? Absolutely not!! It's not the children's fault....it's the parents!!

Anyway, please do not just use the 'law' blindly. Laws are made for mankinds, but not mankinds for laws.

Whoever sell flower sure say their flowers are BEST. Dog owners sure say their dogs are good, good, good....

Let it bites once then we shall discuss abt logic. My neighbour treats dogs like their babies, but treat their own parents worst- than-a-dog. A few friends of mine, married, no kids, got money to buy expensive stuff for dogs, no money to give parents, the world is upside down.....

I have nothing against dog. Sometimes I like that dogs are cute but that stops there.

I rented a room frm my fren who is a dog owner before.

I see the hassle:

- Always have to bring the dog out in morning and evening EVERYDAY. So much hassle.

- House becomes dirty due to dog furs.

- Doors are scratched by dog who scared when alone during rain.

- Scratch mark on the sofa.

The good thing of having a dog is so small compared to the hassle.

Now new place, neighbours have dog. When go back at night, the dog always surprised us by barking suddenly. Stayed for few months already and it still can't recognize us. I feel want to "kick" the dog for surprising us.

We are the ones turning it upside down, nothing to do with dogs, cats etc...

I was bitten by dog before, scared by cat before (as a small kid), but that is just it.

I have nothing against non dog-owners (or for that matter, cat owners) too, just hoping that everybody can be more tolerant and responsible.

Correct, just like the equivalent... "there are no lousy workers, just lousy bosses".... kudos to those responsible pet owners... but there are so many that generically give all owners a bad name... these people are uneducated, old folks (who cannot change already - just wait for them to DIE)... who do not give 2-hoots on the requirements of pet ownership in majority flat-based Singapore. Too bad... if you want to have a BIG dog... then get landed property.... saying cannot afford is kinda stupid.... go Malaysia then.... for the same price, you can get a bungalow with 1-2 acres of space. Else, get those tiny ones, (some are so horrible looking - they don't even qualify to be called dogs) - but make sure those creatures don't bark.... it's bloody irritating. Don't get me wrong, I am a dog and cat lover, but given the potential problems in owning them in condos, forget it - I just don't want to bring myself down to the level of a dog to talk to one :) My condo has an idiot whose dog bark non-stop... so many people complain to the management, who in turn ensured us they have revert to AVA... but AVA didn't do take any action... or frankly, what action can they take? Bang down the door and shoot that miserable piece of ****? I don't know....

maybe the ava should make it mandatory for pet owners to send their pets for training before 1 yr old, and attend retraining every 2 yrs...else the owners will be fine $1000?

pet training should cover :

1) do not poo on the pavement?

2) do not bark/meow after 10:30 pm and without any good reasons?

3) (Dogs only) never attack any innocent and dogphobia persons or kids.

4) (Cats only) never 'flirt' with strangers like walking up to them at foodcenter and rub against pple's leg. etc.

5) .....

Yes, dogs are faithful and loyal to owners. Can one guarantee their children will be as loyal and faithful to take care of their parents when they are old???? Perhaps a teeny weeny proportion, the very rare breed of those who has filial piety. This virtue, am afraid, has become extinct in this generation. Why do you think most modern parents now do NOT expect their children to look after them when they are old???? And also, why the young generation now get married and CHOOSE NOT to have kids but dogs?? The kinda loyalty one gets from dogs can never be compared to SOME people (or children, for that matter!)

Dogs are not just pets like tortoise, guinea pig or fish. Of course, it takes work and hassle and COMMITMENT to own one. If one does not have this basic element, then one is NOT suited to own a dog. And yes, please just go and get a goldfish!!

I encounter the same annoyance and irritations over dogs that bark non-stop every day (even when owner come back home) and at anything. That's because their owner allows it and were NOT considerate of others!! I agree these are the ones that the authorities can step in to do something about it. And they do.

I also seen some dog owners do not pick up or clean up after their dogs in public places. But that will not stop good owners from doing the right thing (i.e. pick up poos) to keep the environment clean for everyone to enjoy.

My point is: Dont penalise good owners and good dogs just because a few bad ones spoil the good reputation of some considerate ones.
