Recommendation For A Decent Sound System.

Recommended Posts

Nice. I am after the XPA-3 or 5 though. I would expect transport to SG to be double but still waiting for the US to wake up :)

Are your prices in US$ or S$ ?. If US then there is the 1.2/1.3 conversion rate :( .

Quote from Emotiva:

UMC-1 $699.00

Freight $81.37 FedEx Economy

Total $780.37

Just have to pay another 7% of GST. They have B-Stock products also. Can save another US$100

So that's almost S$1050 in total. Also have to factor in cost of a multi-channel power amp. Inevitably going to cost more than a standalone AVR (>S$2k). Top of the line Deonon 4311 is about S$2300. For below $1k, can get Yamaha 667 or Denon 1911 or Marantz 6005. New Onkyo 609 is about $900. UMC doesn't handle 3D but all the rest does, if that sort of thing is important to you.

Tough eh :D

Personally, I find 3D a gimmick. Unless they can do it without glasses. Even then, 3D gives me a headache after too long. So I'm not too interested.

For me its the other stuff in the latest AVRs that I'm interested in - decoding DTS-HD Master, Dolby TrueHD, Pre-Outs (to add on power amps later), good room EQ system (e.g. Audyssey Multieq or above), networking (playing your AV files from PC/Laptop in your home network), enough HDMI ports.

For Emotiva, they seem to be famous for their power amps so that's what I'm planning to get (branded power amps are *** expensive!). Also I read somewhere that power amps either develop a fault real fast (within days) or would be relatively problem free thereafter. So getting one used seems rather safe.

For more complex electronics, despite their 5 year warranty, I can imagine having to troubleshoot or worse, repair, can be a real pain with no local agent to help. Different if I stay in the US, Emotiva everything lol.

You could enlighten rather then dancing around the subject <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" +/> .

You have a set of power amps so why did you get them other than because you could, and why not just go for an integrated amp.

The fundamentals are set but everyone interpretation and use is interesting to hear <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />.

Hi RB, sorry 4 not responding earlier, i've been away. yay, wish it's like you say - dancing, you're right, i enjoy dancing - but only with a good partner! :drunk: these days, not so free.. more seriously, from my profile you'll notice i seldom post. or did so sporadically. i only post to nudge or point the way, or do research. anyway, a quick glance at what i've missed past weeks showed you've been busy helping forumers with their Q. You shld start a blog on hi-fi, i think. ok, now to get some shut eye zz <-- asleep already!

Just came back for Adelphi KEC. After listening to so many speakers and brand finally confirm my HTS which is Def Tech Pro Cinema 1000 with pro 2000 center. Sub still considering PC12-plus or the SB12-plus. heard both the sb12 sounded like the bass is direct at u and as for the PC12-ncd sounded more even spread feeling as if the whole room was covered with it. now to choose the sub for my liking. mostly would get the PC12-plus which was told be Dennis from KEC will be more the enough for my living. He recommended the NCD with was just right but looking to get something which will shake the whole house and blow me away before i get complain haha. Lucky i show my wife the Pic of the PC12 online and got her to say ok 1st before i went down, after she saw the REAL PC12-NSD she was like WTF SO HUGE!!!! but too bad she already gave me the green light to buy lol. :dancingqueen:

Haha. great. Show her small pic from far away to get the ok from the wife. Top tip :good:.

It is interesting how the two of us have listened to the same things and have different impressions. Just goes to show the way different people take different sounds.

It is interesting how you found the SB12 directional as the bass levels it produces are of a level the human hearing cannot determine direction. Don't get me wrong, not suggesting anything more than it is an interesting comment. Maybe your perception was at play as you liked the cylinder better. My perception tried very hard to swing me to the cylinder too :D.

The cylinder does look fantastic but I am pretty happy with my sealed box.

Did you try with a reference set to see what a more expensive sub would be like. I went in expecting vibrating windows and rattling dvds and was quite surprised that as the price range went up the rattling and vibrating went down. There was no buzzing or rumpling I had associated with bass in the past but only a deep controlled sound. LOTR - Fellowship of the ring where they have the mass battle at the very beginning and Sauron explodes is a great example of really deep bass.

Oh and movie night. Check my t-blog for details if you are interested. Err limited spaces ;) . Anyone let me know if interested in my blog please.

RB

I also have no interest in the 3D side of things. Seems not too mass market yet. Having to wear glasses is a real issue especially if you have friends round or kids.

Not interested in the Antimode ?. They have a couple for sale in XP although they seem a little expensive at S$400 when you can get them new though the local distributor for S$480.

So did you get the XPA-3 in the end :D.

Yeah, saw the antimode on sale, though not sure what it does lol

I got the XPA-3. Not bad. Quite fast and tight in terms of bass and transients. Had a nice time at the seller's place, listened to some cables he was auditioning. Some of the forumers had a cable shootout yesterday but alas last minute family commitments kept me away.

My new speakers came in over the weekend too. Gonna get me some shoes for the speakers, as the original spikes look kinda dangerous with a young kid around. It's now sitting on its 'bare feet'. Heard that the spikies will improve the sound.
