Eco Friendly Options For Decking Planters

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am trying to decide between using conwood (recycled cement and paper fibre) <a href="http://www.ecotimber.com.sg/products3.html" target="_blank">http://www.ecotimber.com.sg/products3.html</a>

& recycled plastic timber from <a href="http://www.uspl.com.sg/index.htm" target="_blank">http://www.uspl.com.sg/index.htm</a> to deck up my planter areas.

I have seen the WPC sample from goodhill & it looks / feels too 'fake', very un-wood-like. The above 2 looks & feels much better.

Not keen on using real wood cos do not want to chop down more trees plus all the issues with maintenance, discolouration, splinting, warping etc.

Has anyone used any of the above 2? Any issues / problems? Any feedback will be appreciated, thanks!

If this thread is about Eco Friendly decking or wood products of any sort for flooring, i would suggest one to visit http://www.sgbc.sg/index.php/certification/assess/C115/ .

It is worth to note however that a Product is only considered to be "GREEN" only if it obtains SGBP certification http://www.sgbc.sg/index.php/certification/assess/C109/ .

I'm getting my 2 balcony planters decked with recycled plastic lumber decking. Got from a co called Wagon Equipment. I believe I got a rather good price from them (can bargain a bit!) and it has a warranty of 20 years. I choose plastic cos its eco-friendly, no termites/mould, no need to varnish. Chose the darkest brown colour with wood grain, looks quite like real wood.

You can give them a call, they came down to my place last Sat for a no obligation quotation and price is much more reasonable than other companies I called who deal with composite wood. I'm getting mine installed this Friday. :D Hope it turns out good. You can call David/Jim at 91279454.

thanks! for the info

i've gone ahead and used ironwood

anyone wants to know how that turns out with time, can just leave a message here

5 year warranty for workmanship and supposedly structural cracks

witnessed the installation process and 2 workers sent took it step by step and in that sense were thorough

had a friend's balcony decking cave in after 9mths, rented out to big size expats who loved standing for hours on the decking gazing out at the unblocked view.

Hi 3monster. Think you got plenty of alternatives but not much reply to your original question of issues/problems with reconwood.

I saw that Iluma, area near Gong Cha is using reconwood. The biggest problems of reconwood is it tend to lose its color and turn whitish under the sun after a short while. say 2 months. and it tends to warp or cup.

However those reconwood at Sentosa Boardwalk looks fantastic. I'd say the longer the plank and the thinner the plank of reconwood, the easier it will warp or cup. Generally lighter colors of reconwood is recommended, so even when it is faded it doesnt look too out of place.

I think composite wood is the best, as no need to stain or varnish basically requires no maintenance at all and is termite free. There are different kinds of composite wood, some that looks really like plastic, some so so or some has that woody feeling. its up to you to decide which one. If you are a naturalist, then would suggest to go for chengal wood or the least is balau however maintenance is big problem and of course price is a bit high too. You can check a few suppliers like jason parquet, alliance woodtech etc. (just google) and decide which one.. Make sure by the way when they give you a quote that you ask them to measure house and see if theres wastages and gst included. then thats the time to compare.

Regards!
