my colleagues told me they receive sms about the radiation reaching Philippines at 4pm thingie. seems like it's a hoax.

anyway i read in HK news, now Japan wind blowing towards northeast direction. haven't reached China and HK yet. too early to talk about Philippines.

Still safe… for now…

S'pore unlikely to be affected by nuclear radiation: experts

SINGAPORE: It would take conditions like a complete meltdown of Japan's reactors and a continuous fire for a radioactive cloud to reach Singapore, said nuclear experts to ease concerns about Singapore being affected by a radioactive fallout.

Singapore's National Environment Agency had said on Sunday that the country is unlikely to be affected, as the incident is taking place some 5,000 kilometres away.

However, SMSes have been circulating, warning people not to expose themselves to rain as it may carry radioactive particles that can burn or even cause cancer. Other messages caution people to remain indoors and swab iodine on their neck to prevent radiation.

Experts say such messages are causing unnecessary fear, as such a worst case scenario is unlikely because it requires a complete meltdown of Japan's reactors.

Dr Benjamin Sovacool, assistant professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, said that out of 66 nuclear accidents that have occured in the past, only the Chernobyl incident resulted in the wide dispersal of radioactive material.

"It burned for more than four days in Chernobyl, which is why elements dispersed so far. In the case of Japan, it's more than likely that if there's a type of explosion, they would contain it relatively quickly. Which means South Korea, or maybe some parts of China will be hit, but not Singapore," said Dr Sovacool.

Even with this worst case scenario, Singapore will likely have advance warnings.

"It would take weeks, at least days, for any radioactive cloud to leave Japan and make it here, unless wind speeds were to get to tsunami-like speeds. Again, we will have lots of advanced warnings. Even if the worse case scenario were to happen, there would be time to talk about taking pills and changing behaviour," said Mr Sovacool.

Separately, The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority have confirmed Japanese food products exported before last Friday are safe.

These include products currently in the market and those which arrived in Singapore over the last few days.

However, as a precautionary measure, samples of fresh produce from Japan after Friday will be tested.

'Fukushima nuclear rain' SMS a hoax

AN SMS that has been making the rounds warns that radiation from Japan reaching Singapore has turned out to be a hoax.

The text message reads: 'A nuclear power plant in Fukushima, Japan exploded at 4:30 AM today. If it rains tomorrow or later, don't go outside. If you are outside, be sure that you have rain protectors. It's acid rain. Don't let it touch you. You may burn your skin, lose your hair or have cancer. Please pass, stay safe and remind everyone you know.'

The hoax originated in the Philippines and has been circulating here.

Nuclear experts in the Philippines were quick to debunk the rumour. In a statement, the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) also said radiation levels in the Philippine atmosphere were normal as of Monday and showed 'no increase' since the nuclear plants in Fukushima reported sustaining damage in their reactors.

Such hoaxes could cause unnecessary panic and fear. Some who saw the message on Facebook sensed it was a hoax and slammed its senders for causing panic. One Facebook user, Felicia Jieling posted on citizen journalism website STOMP: 'Idiots with nothing better to do can consider going to Japan to assist them, instead of stupidly sending such crap SMS to create mass panic.'

The National Environment Agency (NEA) said that Singapore would not be affected by radioactive rain because Japan's nuclear reactors were located 5,000lm away - a radiation shower would require a complete meltdown of Japan's reactors. -- AsiaOne

i don't know why in this time and age, still have people that are so innocent to think that the wind will blow those radiations all the way to Singapore.

those staying near bukit timah/hillview/bukit batok areas have higher constant exposure of radiation from tv/fm transmitter towers n mindef pulse radar all year round. . . basically the tall towers at upper bukit timah area transmit tens of kilowatts of power that can reach neighbouring countries....

When a matter's electrons in one orbit jump to another orbit, causes matter change, same time gives off energy wave in the form of electromagnetic radiation. Light from sun to earth is travelled through electromagnetic radiation.

Radioactive materials used in nuclear power plant, carry hugh energy in one particle & these materials' properties are very unstable as it keeps radiating out energy in the form of radiation which caused living things' cells structure to change.

These radio-active particles are carried in the clouds, in this instance. Clouds move by wind. Clouds cool and form water droplets, when droplets are heavy enough it becomes rain.

It is wind that blows the clouds..... It is possible.....but "chance" are dim.

now the wind is blowing towards north side, the pacific ocean east of japan, north of japan e.g. Russia is much more at risk than SG.

in any case, this is a really bad disaster and i just wish that no more life will be lost :(

The older generation say this is retribution. Anyway, they are "fast hand fast leg" race. Everything will be up again in short time.

fear of contamination from exposure to radiation rain?

wat abt the radiation that you eat? from the microwave oven.

if u use a microwave oven, u hv radiation right in ur home. dun even talk about sth that's 5000km away.

if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. even if one were to stay at home and completely still so one does not knock into anything that might hurt one, u'll still die frm long periods of inactive and poor blood circulation due to either standing in one position for too long, or sitting down for too long, causing blood flow to be severely restricted.

if one is constantly living in fear, where is the joy of living?

Water content in food, expose to "microwave" wave (not nanowave), through transportation mean of radiation. , cause vibration of water particles to speed up thus generate heat.

Radiation is the mean of transportation of "energy" from one place to another. It can travel through vacuum, concrete.....unlike conduction & convection.

We exposed to all sorts of "rays & waves" which travel though means of radiation (invisible to us) Earth satelites, signal repeater/booster on top of building, comic ray from sun.......all these "contribute" effect to living things cell structural change to different degree, under different intentsity of exposure.

To be aware of dangers is no wrong , right? Thus allow one to do some planning ahead. It is sure better than "gong gong" and don't know die of what. "Gong Gong" ppl usually have little knowledge, don't know what is true or false, just react based on "hearsays".

pls note there are two types of radiation, ionizing n non-ionizing radiation. the ones generating from microwave oven, wifi, handphone, cellular towers are non-ionizing, ie. , they dun cause sub-atomic changed to the cell structures. radiation from nuclear fallout is ionizing which is harmful.

Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the most serious nuclear accident to date, affected a distance 2000 km away in terms of clouds, rains, wind, water, food, milk etc etc.

Some data:

Japan to HK: 2500 km away

Japan to Singapore: 5000 km away

for your info :)

I think it is not easy to reach us but still i dont really want any rain to come near me for this period of time now.

There are so many rumours out there saying that singapore will get affected by the radiation and etc... in my opinion, if singapore will to get affected, indonesia and malaysia will be the 1st to get affected. Honestly, we are quite safe...God bless!
