Hacking Away A Bathroom

Recommended Posts

Has anyone done this or heard of someone doing this: hack away an entire bathroom, seal up whatever openings there are to pipes etc, and use the space for something else such as extension to a room?

The condo which we are eyeing has too many bathrooms and we are thinking of getting rid of one bathroom which is attached to a bedroom.

Is this feasible? Are there implications on the residents above or below the unit if we seal up the pipes? Would it be expensive to undertake such works? Any other issues to consider?

Thanks for any advice!

You cannot saw the pipes and seal up the holes as your neighbors upstair and downstair are sharing the same pipe. You CAN however box up the pipes and use the available space for something else.

That's right. First have to seek approval from the condo management. Shldn't be a problem. Let them know which walls u intend to hack as well juz to make sure after hacking it wouldnt affect the building. You can remove the WC and basin only leaving the main pipings which can be concealed since it's a condo.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your responses

Even if we were to conceal the pipes, we should make sure they are accessible (eg casing can be dismantled easily) so that in the event of a leak from upstairs, the plumber would be able to get to the pipes without hassle, right?

Are there any other issues to consider?

Condos usually can conceal. But it's best to check with your management if not a boxup will do for easy accessibility. Other issues to consider will be your floor and wall but if you are hacking the whole place shld be fine. :)

Sorry, I am not too clear about the terminology. Is "conceal" different from "boxup"?

I presume "boxup" means building a simple casing around the pipes to hide them

What does "conceal" entail? Something more elaborate?

Learning lots here. Thanks!

Wa got teaching fees one leh. Each lesson bla bla bla... :sport-smiley-004: just kidding!

Okays concealed piping is simply no access. Hidden behind a wall or tiles. This is not approve by HDB. Landed or condo still okays. Very common too. If got leakage means the whole wall or tiles have to come out, together with the piping la WC la, etc.

Boxup is the accessible way either by using carpentry wood or partition wall. Can come with handles for opening and closing up to u. So to get to the leaking pipe juz simply open and close the boxup. If no handle then 'open' up the box lo.

Hope this helps.
