Overlay Vs Hacking

hi, recently one of the contractors quoted me for overlaying the floor tiles in our 5i resale bathroom (both toilets). however, we prefer to hack the floor tiles altogether as my best friend experienced a problem when she initially chose to overlay. the neighbour's bathroom ceiling started leaking. so they had to stop work and then redo the entire thing by hacking, thus incurring double cost.

so which would you suggest? overlay floor tiles or hacking? this is for a resale flat. any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

You can only overlay once. So if you choose not to hack now, in 20 years time if you want to re-do the toilet, you're going to have to hack.

With overlay, normally you should not have a leakage problem, maybe at the floor trap and toilet bowl zone only. It probably depends on the skill of the people doing the overlay.

I had this question when I was choosing my contractor for my 3room resale. In the end, I decide to go with the decision that I am more comfortable which is to hack the original tiles as I heard stories which your friend encounter before. I will think that the best is go with your heart and to list down the pro and cons for these two options. Hope this helps..

For me its the same as well, i prefer to have the tiles hacked instead of overlaying, thats for me atleast

Hi. I was suggested to ovelay also by my ID. Reason;to save some money.

How much does it normally cost to hack all the floor tiles, kitchen wall and 2 toilets?

If cost different is not much, I might as well go with hacking.

Hacking is expensive, partly because of haulage.

Overlay is ok, as long as your waterproofing and old tiles are fine bah. If it's a really old flat. I think to hack first would honestly save you from possible nightmares.

I was charge $1.5k just for hacking and haulage or my small pathetic little bathroom of only 35 sq ft.

Hmm, that is costly. Was there under lying issues? You could have asked why it costs so much. I have seen toilets which have 2 layers of tiles to be hacked. Thereby increasing the hacking costs.

Most hackers are not out to conned honestly. Price difference of $30 - 50 per toilet is because of their manpower costs. Some has freelancers. Some has their own in-house workers.

But, like I love to say. Be bold to ask. It's YOUR money.
