Toilet making weird sound - video uploaded

Recommended Posts

Hi all, need your expertise to this.

My toilet is making a weird honking sound. The sound comes randomly. Sometimes once every minute/few minutes, sometimes loud/soft, sometimes when I on the taps/didn't turn it on.

I just did my reno and retained the water tank. Before the reno, there was no such issue. The contractor doesn't have a clue what is wrong.

I have uploaded a video to youtube. It is around the 6 - 7 second mark..

Can you isolate where and when the noise happens?

1) Does it happen only when you flush the wc or it happens on its own periodically?

2) Does it come from the storage heater? If so, which part of the storage heater?

This is the difficult part. I can't!

It happens on its own perodically, but I think it happens more frequently after the taps are used. It could be just my brain playing with me though.

I don't know where the sound is coming from, it happens too quickly for me to follow the sound..

Lets try the following : (recruit 1 family member or friend to help you)

Stop usage of all water.

Are there still any noise?

One of you try standing right below the storage heater, while the other try

a) flushing the WC.

b) turning on taps.

c) turning on showers.

Do this area by area to isolate the noise. Check if it comes from within your unit.

Yes, but the noise also comes on when no water is being used at all as well.. Does this indicate that it is from other unit?

It sounds more like fill valve seal. (air, water and rubber washer do make strange noises.)

Try the steps to see if you can induce the sound?

Ok will do thanks for the advice. Will report back..

The heater looks like a Joven, you could try to completely drain the water and push the pressure relief valve lever.

Will your contractor be able to help you with that?

It is a 2 year old Ariston.. I called the contractor.. he say he can take down the water tank, and we can see if the noise is still there.

Ok, I have done the tests.

All 3 do not immediately induce the sound. I'm quite certain that the sound is very random, and comes on regardless if the 3 is on or not. Could be my mind playing tricks but the frequency of the sound increases when water is being used.

I climbed up and put my hands to the pipe (circled in red). I noticed that before the sound come out, the pipe would vibrate slightly with a soft gurgle. I'm 90% certain that the sound is coming from the pipe of the water tank or the water tank itself.

I thought it sound like a trumpet, so maybe the storage tank is overpressure and the vent valve is releasing the excess pressure.

You might want to try switching off the (electricity) water heater after bathing.

The location looks like the where the pressure release valve (or multi function safety valve) is.

This could either be the heater releasing pressure or a loose heating element.

There is no leaking from the valves at all?

You could call Ariston Singapore service hotline @ 6305 0899 for them to check the heater.

It could prove to be more cost effective in the long run.
