Mounting ceiling speakers for surround sound

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've got a couple of queries about mounting ceiling speakers for a home theatre surround sound system, or rather, future-proofing them.
First time home owner here so might be quite silly questions, please bear with me.

1) I'm considering a wired surround sound system, which means the cables for the rear speakers will probably have to run through the wall.
Does this mean my upgrade options will be limited in the future, since I can't exactly change out those wires already hidden in the wall?

2) Also, if I have to mount the rear speakers, means probably gotta drill into the wall. But I'm thinking if I have to replace them in the future and the new speaker mounting brackets don't fit the existing holes, means probably have to fill with cement or putty and drill new ones.. Which sounds messy and troublesome.
Anyone can share any solutions for this, besides putting them on a shelf instead? I'm trying to avoid the shelf option to keep things looking simple.

Thanks in advance for the help!

For the cables, you can get someone to hack the wall partially (which will be very messy) and hide a conduit (PVC pipe) or trunking into the wall. A thicker conduit will be easier to pull the cable but it will means more hacking. I am using trunking as it flat and does not require deep hacking, I have no plan of changing the cable in future though. In future when you want to change, tape the new cable to the old cable and pull it through (or use a cable puller).

Run the conduit all the way to back plate (mine didn't). Next time you can just open up the faceplate and try to pull/push the cable through. If there are bends along the conduit, it will be more difficult, so try to keep them straight as much as possible. Take note of where the conduits run behind the wall, you don't wanner drill a hole through them in future should you decided to drill a hole to hang painting etc.

Shelves i think is the best way if you really want to avoid drilling. As the sound system itself is heavy.

How was it?
