Kitchen Cabinet cement base VS Cabinet leg & Cover Plate

Recommended Posts

Hi all:

From what I saw, almost every kitchen in Singapore made the cement base(around 50mm) for Kitchen cabinet. Then just left the cabinet on top. I went to Ikea and I noticed Ikea kitchen cabinets were designed with legs & cover plate. The cabinet sits on the legs so below cabinet is empty. And install cover plate around the outer side below. So you won't seen the legs.

Obviously, I know the cement base will prevent water to damage the cabinet, and prevent dust so cleaning will be easy. But the design with leg and plate can do the same thing. The cover will prevent dust and it can be sealed also.

I am doing renovation for kitchen. Currently I am thinking if it is possible to tile floor all flat without the cabinet base. Then my cabinet will use legs and cover plate. This will allows me to have more options in future. Such as if I want to change cabinet or want to relocated something in my kitchen. There is no need to replace all floor tiles.

I went to Guang Zhou and some places have high humidity and have similar bugs like Singapore. I saw all the kitchen never make the cement base.

For my thinking, the base seems not necessary. Is there any bad effects if don't make the base?

Please share about you opinion.

same qns as u. just that im not aware of the IKEA leg cover plate. how does it work, do u mind sharing?

was worried about cabinet sitting directly on the floor. will not be doing heavy splashing to clean kitchen e.g flooding type. however im worried if I mop the floor, would it damage the laminates?

Obviously, the cabinet is not sitting on the floor. During installation, the plastic leg is attached to the bottom of cabinet. Leg stand on the floor and cabinet is sitting on the leg.

For the working principle. attach the leg to the bottom of cabinet with screw. There is a cover clip and attach the cover clip to the leg. The leg is adjustable from 50mm to 100mm. Each leg can be load 30kg.

All the legs are taking load and cover is not. Both leg and cover comes with plastic or aluminium. There is also another way: the cover is attaching to the bottom of cabinet.

My place came with kitchen cabinets that had legs and cover plate as well. But the cover plate was wooden so as to match the cabinets.

As my parents place is old school kind, they have concrete base below. I preferred that so I tore down the original kitchen cabinets at my place and installed a concrete base for my kitchen cabinets to sit on.

It all boils down to what you are comfortable with. As long as you don't splash water everywhere in kitchen when mopping floor then no concrete base should be okay.

Thanks for reply. 2 things I want to know:

1. Your initial kitchen cabinet with legs. Is that you brought from Ikea or is that you made by carpentry in the beginning?

2. It seems that you made a concrete base. Removed the legs and sits cabinet on that base. Did you adjust the horizontal level by a spirit level gauge? Is your cabinet mounted on the back wall with anything?

1. Mine was built by the developer. As the height of the counter top was 1m+ and the top cabinets were taller as a result, plus those cabinet legs that I didn't prefer, I opted to demolish and rebuilt new cabinet and at the same time, add the concrete base.

2. No I did not do any technical stuff. My carpenters did the measuring and leveling etc. Yes, I believe they built a frame that was mounted to back wall and also resting it's weight on the concrete base.

1m+ is so high. Most probably i saw is between 0.85m to 0.9m. Thanks for your reply. I will consider.

Anyone can recomnend a concrete kitchen contractor. My last quote for 1.8m was 2.8k. Only base not kitchen hardware or cabinets

You mean the concrete top only?

If to be honest, my wife ordered the kitchen because she spends the most time there, and she ordered the kitchen cabinet with legs & cover plate. We ordered it from cabinetselect.com and their representatives listen to all her requests and made it how she wanted. By the way, if the cover is not sealed it will not prevent dust, but in my opinion, it is better to ask a specialist, because he knows a lot more than us. I respect my wife's decision (kitchen cabinets designed with legs & cover plate).
