Will hacking of Skirting damage the ceramic tiles?

Recommended Posts

I recently bought a resale flat and wanted to overlay vinyl on top of the existing ceramic tiles. However, I needed to hack the skirting in order to fit the vinyl. However, upon hacking the skirting, many of the ceramic tiles cracked and were severely damaged even though the tiles were nowhere near the skirting. From my understanding, the tiles are somewhat hollow. Does anyone know this is a common phenomenon? I tried to google hard on this but couldn't find anything on it. Both the vinyl sales consultant and the contractor warned me about the risk of hollow tiles but I am just not sure if this was really the case.
