What I did for my parquet was horizontal for 2 common rooms and vertical for MBR. This was due to the fact that my living/dining also parquet so I wanted a continuation into the MBR.

Got the Taiyo (Japan) brand one from CK Tang (Orchard), it comes with curved zone which allows chinese wok cooking.

Hi, can I check how much you guys paid for the installation of your electrical heater? I was quoted $120, is that reasonable?
-
I did parquet for my whole place, but poor estimation by supplier left me with 2 over boxes full. Don't mind selling cheap if anyone interested, assuming you using same size and type of parquet as me. Can contact me to take a look if you are keen.

Hi Raayn, Thought I just share my experience with you, hope it would be of some assistance. My wife and I also decided to go for a basic reno as we will be heading overseas next year and will be looking to rent the place out. As such, we saw fit to try to spend the minimum we can. Basically 10k can be a realistic budget assuming that excludes furniture, which I guess you can start with the bare minimum and add as you go along. Here is our rough expenditure so far: 1. Flooring - parquet for living room and 3 rooms - $3.5k (no haulage fee needed) 2. Aircon - Sharp Sys3 - $1.7k (although I got a $100 summon when I went up for a quick check that day on the aircon so I take it as $1.8k ) 3. Kitchen - Ikea (plus sink and tap) - $3k 4. Painting - DIY - $70 (We decided the best way to save was to keep the whole house white so we bought did only minimum painting to touch up the spots that were dirtied) 5. Lighting - Ikea (plus installation, I estimate $300-$400) 6. Service yard windows - $500 As you can see, even with a $10k budget, that leaves you a bit more for other essential electronics such as stove, electrical heater, as well as simple bathroom fittings (bars for show curtains, mirrors, etc. from Ikea). There are of course other items to consider such as furniture (we are not building in any) and curtains which might burst your budget somewhat, but those can be slowly added when your finances build up somewhat. Hope this helps!

Hi, anyone got reliable contact for electrician, looking for someone to install my lights bought from Ikea, door bell as well as heater (I presume this one also done by electrician?) If can give me a rough idea of the charges, that be great too!

Any firm you decided on? Was thinking of just going with anyone I see on yellow pages, but since I'm engaging them directly, I understand they will have to apply for the renovation permit from HDB so definitely need to be HDB-approved window installers/contacters
-
Anyone has contact for window contractor? Hoping to do sliding windows for the service yard. Also, will I have to get the renovation permit from HDB before I do the windows?
-
Are you intending to go for ceiling fan in living? I'm also going for the 'bare' look with regards to the ceiling and thinking if I should have a ceiling fan with lights for the living.

Thanks... I no ID, that's why trying to work out flow myself. Doubt the shops delivering the electrical appliances will take adequate measures to protect my flooring so thought of shifting them in earlier. But I realised getting the appliances so early with the house not in move-in condition also no use. Somemore need to waste electricity to keep fridge on, so decided to leave all the appliances to the end, including the air-con. Is that ok or should I still go ahead and do the air-con first. Thought I will do it just before I get the painter to do touch-up. If I didn't request for cement screeting when I collected my keys, can I request it now? Where should I direct my request to? The office at Blk220A?

I'm thinking of doing ala-carte renos to save cost, but not sure if my order of works is correct. Could you guys kindly advise. I got my flat from BE so kitchen, bomb shelter all tiled, bathrooms done up. House is fully painted and I'm happy with the colour. 1. Install air-con 2. Install kitchen (getting from Ikea), including installation of sink, tap and induction hob 3. Install sliding windows for service yard 3. Purchase washing machine and fridge 4. Cement screeting 5. Switch SCV point across living room 7. Install lightings, ceiling fan and electric heater 6. Install parquet flooring for living/dining and bedrooms 8. Touch-up paint and clean-up Basically these are the simple stuff I'm doing. Aiming to do parquet flooring last so as not to damage the flooring due to other works or moving of heavy equipment such as washer and fridge. Is the order ok, or should I rearrange any tasks. Appreciate your input!

Was wondering whether the cement base for kitchen cabinets is a necessity? Thinking of getting the Ikea kitchen and from what I understand, the cabinets sit on 'legs' disguised by wood skirting. Wonder if there any major disadvantages as compared to a cement base I should be aware of...
-
Is the cement base for kitchen cabinets really necessary? Anyone intending on a kitchen without the base? I'm thinking of getting my kitchen from Ikea and instead of a cement base, the cabinets stand on 'legs' with a wooden skirting hiding them. I'm just wondering are there an major disadvantages I should be aware of?

I think my quotes include all that, they didn't separate the supply, installation and haulage fees.
-
You mean get sand from contractor instead of supplying their own sand, difference so much - 1k?? Cause the lower quote includes sand supplied already, just that not from main con.
-
Any one else mind sharing their tiling cost for living/dining and 3 bedrms for 94m2? Also, can anyone help me with the total area to be tiled for the above? Not too sure of my calculation. The ID who gave me the low quote stated approx 650 sq feet, that seems a little low right? I'm wondering whether that's the reason for the lower cost.
-
Mine is 94m2, got one quote for 4.2k (max up to $3.50psf) and another for 5.2k (max up to $3psf). Although I suspect the ID who gave the lower quote isn't aware that my is a new estate although I'm sure I mentioned it in passing. Perhaps he didn't take into account the sand and manpower cost from main con. Will wait for my other quote for comparison. I also realised parquet can be cheaper than tiling in some instances, and it's tempting to simply parquet the whole house.
-
So it is true to sand has to be purchased from them (how about cement?) and that they have to clear the debris. But the actual laying of the tiles can be done by the workers your own contractor engages right? Their workers don't lay the tiles for you, correct? So if it's merely purchasing sand from them and getting them to clear the debris, should the price differ that much? If so, the main contractor side really making use of the opportunity to make a killing sia... Also, anyone can share with me their flooring quotes so that I can have a better idea of how much it costs? If not convenient to post, can PM me, thanks a lot!!!

Hi, have an important question to ask. Gotten floor quotes from 2 IDs, tiling of living, dining and 3 bedrooms differ about 1k. Was told by the ID who quoted the higher figure that due to the fact that ours is a new estate, it is a regulation that the cement and sand as well as the manpower for laying the tiles and clearing the debris must be obtained from the main contractor for our estate. Can anyone who is in the know or has completed their flooring please provide some clarification? Thanks!

Given to you by HDB when you collect your keys. It's this sheet with the approved designs on the reverse side appendix.
-
Hmm? Don't really understand the significance of the door. Was asking about whether I can just install casement windows for the currently open-aired service yard without the "approved" grills.
-
Hi, can I check whether the service yard requires grills or can I just arrange for casement windows to be installed. I know HDB gave us the designs of approved grills but if I do not need grills, I can simply install the casement windows, right? Or are grills a must? Please advise, thanks! Also, big orange, can bold my nick already, got my keys awhile ago
-
Hi big orange, do add me on yr 'family tree' My unit is in 220C Cheers!
-
Hi all, my wife and I just got our keys last week. We are staying in 220C. Glad to have found a community who just gotten their flats in the same area. Really need a lot of reno advice from all the pros here...
