  1. haha thanks bro for being merciful on me :) yeah i heard abt the heat issue - shall keep it on top of my open tv console, hopefully that is sufficient.

just realized that 10CM is a humongous monster! almost double that of the CC, so i guess space constraints will kill that option off for now (until i upgrade my TV console or even better, apartment :P anyway KEC quoted that upgrade from CC to the next level CS is $60. worth considering but only if i retain my 10.1 front speakers...

yeah will be buy a bluray dvd player to match, but i may be stinging abit on that for now. looking at a few options from philips (their carnival sale this weekend)...

    CK

The 608 is quite a decent receiver. I shant "poison" you even more. Ensure there's plenty of ventilation for the receiver as it tends to get pretty hot.

As for the center speaker, do get the 10CM if your budget allows.

Btw, will you be going into bluray?

    Cheers

  2. thanks vince! am a convert thanks to your constant evangelism on the benefits of HTS...else for sure wld've gone with a soundbar :)

why i got 608 eventually boiled down to $$$. my budget was actually $2000, and i was weighing btw either the 508, 578 or 608. Alan at KEC recommended 608 due to its THX and chip upscaling capabilities. in terms of power - do you mean to say that my current 608 does not power up the speakers well enough?

also, would you recommend that i trade off my front 10.1 speakers with the center 10CM speaker? given the budget and size constraints. ideally of course, i would like to have both :)

    Congrats on your HTS!

Mind me asking why Onkyo 608?

Also do ask KEC to calibrate your sub for you. This is a great system but if you want to enhnace it further,

    1) change to a more power receiver

    2) Change your 10CC center to the 10CM series

lastly, 3) Get a SVS sub

    Cheers

  3. hi all,

am happy to announce that i have joined the HTS club! went down to KEC yesterday to sign up

    AVR - Onkyo 608

    Wharfedale 10.1 front speakers x 2

    Wharfedale 10.0 rear speakers x 2

    Wharfedale 10 CC center speaker

    Wharfedale 10 MX-SUB subwoofer

all for $2350, inclusive of cables and installations from KEC. not sure if it was worth the money, but just happy to get this sorted out (since months!) zz

i now have a problem with the 2 front speakers though - the 10.1 are too big for me to wall-mount, and my TV console doesnt have the space to put them on. Seems like i have 2 options:

    1. downgrade back to 10.0

    2. get floor stands for the front speakers (anywhere to get good and affordable speaker stands)

if anyone has other creative solutions to the problem do share!

  4. Finally settled with an Onkyo 607 with the Ms carnival 5.1 speaker system.. consisting of carnival 1,5 and 7..

for the surround speakers, is it better to wall mount , place on stand or bracket?

The uncle was telling me to wall mount using L-shape hook.. confuse...

hey budgetice, what was the damage and where did you get your combo at? if you are fine to share...

  5. currently 'am paying 3mth sibor + 1.3% with no lock in.. it's almost 2 years alrdy so i'm thinking to refinance.. my loan tenure is around 30 yrs, maybe wanna shorten a bit to 20 yrs plus..

if within the bank, they offered me 1st yr: 1.95% fixed, 2nd yr onwards: 3mth sibor + 1.25% no lock in

another bank offered me 3yr fixed lock in: 1.99%, onwards: 3mth sibor + 1.25%

anyone can suggest which one better? or should i wait for another months?

    thanks :)

hi reffine, which bank is offering you the "3yr fixed lock in: 1.99%, onwards: 3mth sibor + 1.25%" package? personally i feel better with a fixed package deal than a floating one. cos SIBOR is low (if not lowers) now and the only way to go is up. would rather have a fixed deal for the next 3 years. at least i know my damages in the short term lah..

jus my personal opinion of cos. if any experts can also advise?

  6. I am paying paying 1.5% interest rate.

I think every one have don’t give up if they don’t immediately lower their interest rate. You should keep trying about once a month to lower your rates. It does take a little time, but it will be worth it.

hi kelvincrispy, which bank are you loaning from? is this a fixed rate or SIBOR package? any lock-in periods?

somehow i feel stanchart svcs not so good, after signing the loan contract, their response time for any rate queries gets multipled by 3. &^$%$#!@# :curse:

  7. *RED ALERT*

Ive found out from some experts why is the 707 is more expensive than the 608. the 608 only has Audyssey 2EQ while the 707 has Audyssey Multi EQ which means

the 608 dont calibrate the subwoofer!!!!! This is important as your frequency crossover may not be optimum.

You guys better wait for the 708.

    Cheers

wow..looks like it is really one penny, one goods. :(

sorry noob question - what is "frequency crossover"? assuming if i have purchased the 608 and gotten the KEC guys to do a one-time calibration, would that calibration remain constant? or different calibration applies for different functions e.g. movies, music, games etc?

  8. hi guys, chanced upon this thread talking about interest rates, thought i'd get some advice. i am currently with Stan Chart, paying 3mth SIBOR+1.25% with no lock in. however, as i had taken the loan to purchase a new property, part of the loan amount has not been disbursed to the developer yet. also, was given full legal subsidy and 3 yrs fire insurance.

i had compared around and stanchart doesnt seem to be giving me the best deal and none of the their existing packages are enticing enough.. am i able to do a re-financing with other banks? what are the implications? legal subsidy call-back? penalty on undisbursed amount?

    thanx! :)

  9. CK Hi

get the 707. You wont regret paying a bit more to give your speakers a better performance.

G11 is full HD plasma. very solid specs & yes, it supports up to 1080p.

Lastly, there's a OPPO80 (cost $588) which is an alternative for the OPPO83. I cant say if there's any BR player currently that can match

the OPPO without paying thru your nose for it.

    Cheers

You have the pricing for the 608? Atcually the 608 is rather new & its HDMI 1.4a compliant (supports 3D video). basically both 707 & 608 are pretty similiar in power & in performance. And yes, the 608 uses the faroudja chipset as the 707.

    Cheers

thanks for the advice vince! the guy at KEC (it was an elderly guy) told me they dont have 608 yet, but he told me pricing will be similar to 607, perhaps topping up abit more (he didnt say how much). if 608 and 707 are comparable in features, then mabbe it makes economic sense to get the 608! will go KEC again to find out when 608 will be in stores and how much.

  10. Hi how much were you quoted for the 607?

Atcually its better to enhance your receiver to have video upscaling. 607 only has upscaling to 1080i.

Yes, if you asked me,. its better to have a receiver to do the video upscaling. A normal DVD picture will look sharper.

Or you could let a good Bluray player to do the upscaling eg the OPPO83 which will probably set you back at $999.

    Hope this info helps.

    Cheers

    hi vicenzo, i was quoted

    507-$499

577-top up another $60 from 507, which means it is $557

    607-$699

sorry i am such a noob-my tv is a panasonic G11 plasma. does it support up to 1080p?

besides the legendary oppo player, which i read so much about on the forum, any other bluray player recommended? i am actually thinking no point spending the money all on the AVR and having a lousy player. perhaps just spread the money around... :P

  11. hello all, just went down to adelphi kec to audition 5.1 HTS with a 2k budget in mind n was recommended wharfedale diamond 10 paired with onkyo 577 avr (507 no more stock liao). Am very tempted by the setup but would certainly like some advice reg e avr - shd I fork out another $140 to upgrade to onkyo 607? was told both 577 and 607 are similar except 607 has more hdmi ports, and that both don't hv upscaling capabilities.does upscaling really work for non-br DVDs?or shd I spend the money on a better br player instead?

    thanx!! :)

  12. how about doing something like a see thru divider? i dunno if that will make your apartment look less complicating, since alot of mirrors do make the whole place a bit confusing..

thks for ur suggestion lionfreak! actually we do have another mirror wall in the dining area, so you may be right about having too many mirrors. the "partition" we were thinking of is not so much of an actual physical, but rather a pseudo-divider as that stretch of wall is rather long, we would like to have something in btw to make the 2 rooms seem separate. some ideas we had toyed about:

    1. painting

    2. vertical strips of mirror and wood

    3. vase/statue

  13. hi garion, may i ask what was the quote you got from your ID on the PD door installation?

hi, i have no first hand experience but have already placed the order for 1 set of toilet doors :)

this is based on my fren and ID recommendation.....

and since they are PSB tested, should be quite reliable

  14. need experience and suggestions of folks in the forum - we are currently renovating our unit and we currently are having troubles deciding how best to "divide" the living and dining rooms. nothing too fancy...jus wanted to have something to make a distinction btw the 2 areas.

    4227838677_7f52b952c0_o.jpg

my designer (not ID, cos only engaged his services to design and draw up a 3D pic) suggested use of mirror to do the division, but am hoping to explore other options. do give me some ideas and suggestions how!
