  1. Wanted to post it at my thread but am bringing it here.

You know what, I recently saw some episodes of Coconut Coast and was so enchanted by the place that I'm now inspired to visit Kerala during the Dec hols! The host is this effiminate chef called Reza who speaks with a very crisp British accent. He reminds me of Kumar (without the Singlish), the way he flourishes his hands while talking.

  2. Some random tots to share;

The slit window at the kitchen is good but yr hubby cannot ambush u anymore.

Is this a new condo? I see lots of bay windows, which 'new' developers like to use to 'eat' up space.

U got nice, unblock, permanet view over looking the pvt housing + occasional free show from that man bathing.

Hi Matrix! Sorry totally missed your post. Mine is a fairly new-ish condo. TOPed in Sep I think.

Yah, the bedrooms all have bay windows which is what we like also, even tho it takes up space :)

That's the trend nowadays, that or floor-to-ceiling windows. Even HDB has jumped on the bandwagon. All the DBSS flats sold by pte developers have same design, at least the ones we saw for The Peak and the one in Bishan has bay windows and balconies too.

  3. microwave can grill and roast? won't it be dry? i didn't try using microwave to cook before... just bought a conventional oven yesterday leh. and really thinking hard if i need a steamer. cos it cost 3 to 5 times more than my conventional oven leh... i want and want, but don't know what it does.... wahahah.

It's a multi-function so when it's grill, roast and bake, it doesn't use micro waves, but the conventional heating element.

If you like steamed food and going for healthy lifestyle, then worth it to get lah. But if you only do the occasional steaming, then mbe can get those cheap ones. But maybe the one you eyeing is multi-function also? Usually these expensive ovens come with free lessons and cookbook, shd take advantage of them.

  4. I have not seen most except jamie and gordon....maybe shd go searching thru the net soon....but reno keeping me aways from my streaming...so tired everyday after work and most time is looking thru reno stuff n of course RENOTALK! wahaha...'

I wan to try out my panasonic microwave's grill. c if it can produce something good as compared to built in ones.

The National microwave that's been in my family for 10 years? It's a multi-function so it can bake, grill, and roast too.

And the result is as good, if not better than those built-in ones.

In fact, my helper prefer to use the microwave rather than the built-in back at my old place.

  5. Back to the gardening topic, how do I ask the administrators to pin a topic on posting balcony garden pictures on RT? Or can I start the thread myself? Not that I hv any garden pics to share :D

doing online research on balcony gardening right now and found this good article which appeared in ST abt 2 years back.

    Balcony Garden

  6. I like Michael Smith too, drooling at his walk in pantry lor... whoa...

but sometimes, his recipes just doesn't kick off that inspiration leh... and his son don't like the food he prepared half the time.. kekeke.. so i guess not kid friendly la.

anna olson's recipes are so wholesome, i love what she prepared on her shows, but then i find that she got problem describing her food leh...

another one i like is Laura Calder. she's quite cute la... and then the low cuts she wears sometimes can see free show.. wahah!

    my favourite is still jaime...

hey, i guess all of us here subscribed to AFC?

Laura Calder - is the one who does French Cooking at Home? I dun like her, leh... maybe cuz I find the way she talks very funny...do you notice when she talks, she grits her teeth?

AFC got some nice shows, and some duds. I actually like Chopped, but keep seeing reruns. Dun think they have new shows.

I want to like Restaurant Makeovers but tt Russian or East European guy who does the hacking and renovation just puts me off cuz he's such a famewhore, yucks.

I watch Chef At Home just to look at his kitchen, and pantry, heh heh

Yep, my fave is still Jamie, his new show is done at his own home, and its just so inspirational to watch him cook produce from his own garden. and his recipes are so simple to follow, not sure if its tasty though, I always find it amusing to watch these Chefs go 'oooh, delicious' when they taste their own food, like what Jamie does :D

  7. Here's my dream:

Michael Smith's Pantry (just love his walk-in pantry in Chef at Home)

Jamie Oliver's Garden (fresh veggies all year long)

Anna Olson's ovens (in 'Sugar', I feel like I've added 10 kgs just watching her make the desserts)

Jamie Oliver (again)'s kitchen island (stove, sink, chopping board all rolled into one!)

Nigella's Curves (oooh, I hv that already, hah hah :D )

  8. I am jealous! Everyone seems to have bath tub! Man!. :P

Regarding sharp ends and edges, I am accident prone, so I told my contractor and furniture maker all the same thing, round all edges as i will be bound to knock or kick or bump into the edges. The house must be safe proof for me. I actually managed to bump and triped in the furniture shop while looking for side table just after telling tat to the furniture shop owner.

    hee hee, funny :D

I'm actually quite mad at my ID cuz she didn't even consider this simple point. She knows I've got young kids in the house but yet she didn't modify the design to suit them. She really really took wholesale my sketchup and only did minor modifications. I feel like filing away all the hard edges but it will spoil the laminate :(

  9. oh good thing i read this! was going to buy the herbs over the weekend. I thought herbs didn't like direct sunlight? hmmmm time for a re-think! was hoping to grow tomatoes in a pot also... maybe not practical now

Just sharing a useful resource on plants and gardening since we're on the subject. Nparks have an online plant reference database with info on most plants which can be found in Singapore and the region. What's cool about it is that you can search for 'Plants for beginners' so if you're a real noob about gardening like me, this is really useful. For each plant, they will state if its suitable for indoors, can be grown in pots or containers, what kind of shade and watering it needs, etc etc. Check out FloraWeb. I hv already shortlisted some plants for discussion with the Chief Gardening Officer (ie Hubby).

  10. Wah .. one vase for $100++ is quite steep :P

I will scout around for that.

Btw, if you want to plant some herb plants in your planter box, please make sure that there's enough sunlight to the planter area. Enough sunlight as in direct sunlight for the whole day.

I am currently growing mint and thai basil and both of them dying cuz not enough sunlight. :(

The planter and living room balcony get the full morning sun until about 5 pm when the light and heat shifts to the bedroom area. Hope that's enough. My helper and I are already planning to plant cili padi, curry leaves, mint leaves, coriander leaves, pandan leaves, what-have-you leaves in the planter :) no need to go market anymore, heh heh.

  11. Plants around the balcony...

    31248_392538350661_730630661_4255841_181

Nice plants! Where did you get them? Katong Flower Shop is right by my door step but not sure if they hv the plants I want.

I'm looking for sunflowers, a few variety of orchids, mock tomatoes, etc etc. Actually I hv the opposite of a green thumb (a brown thumb??), so most likely my helper will be taking care of the plants!

  12. wow, congrats on the completion of reno! your house already looks well lived in... :D

btw, love the window next to the tub in your bathroom..if only we could all have that amount of natural light in our bathrooms.. sigh.. congrats anyway!

    Thank you, thank you!

Yah, it's nice to look at but in terms of being practical, well...not so much. You can't let the light come through for obvious reasons (unless your bathroom faces the forest but then again the animals may be watching, hee hee :D ). Most of the time, the blinds are drawn and closed. At least with vertical blinds you can open it a little bit. I hope to put some plants but am not sure if it will give enough camouflage.

  13. just realized, i moved in earlier than you... but your place looks more lived in than mine!!

haven't finished my guest room and dining area yet!

You mean it looks messier :D

No lah, yours look very live in with all your personal touches. Very warm and cozy.

I haven't put in any photos or anything personal in our house yet. My husband refuses to drill anything in the house so I hvn't yet put up our paintings and family photos, but I'm trying to slowly make him come around. How can we not drill anything???? even the bidet spray in the toilet he uses a suction cup to hang them, haiz.....

  14. yah! originally wanted to get 2 for the guest room... so like 2 single beds put together, no more stock so ended up giving it to my helper as a bed.

my current living room only the sofa to sit on... if got guest, will have to bring in the chairs from the balcony and dining chairs to sit on!

Just came back from visiting your house. Got room for one more armchair I think, in the space between your dining and living (see first picture). But cannot get too bulky. You can try a vintage designer replica or the real deal. Will match nicely with the rest of your decor. Very bohemian chic. I like... :)

  15. hey... nice place!!!

we have the same sofa bed for our helper and the same shower caddy!!

I also really like that single chair you have in the living room.. still trying to see if i can put something like that in my tiny tiny living room!

Do you know that Ikea doesn't sell that single sofa bed anymore?? We searched for it high and low at both Ikea outlets. In the end, found it on ebay and bought it 2nd hand for $175.

R u referring to the leather armchair? I think I hv too many chairs in the living room :P but I don't want to give any of the furn away so hv to fit them in somehow. End up my living room is filled to the brim with stuff!

  16. Yeah, very zen. Specially with the small bench.

I also think it's fake flowers, but it's a very nice one, that's why the mover got tricked.

Nowadays, no one really have the time to keep change the flowers every week. Hmm .. maybe I should get the vase at somewhere else, but definitely not IKEA. It would be the same as everybody's house.

Since you're into wood, there's a shop at Holland Village Shopping Centre which sells vases made of mango wood. It's very nice, zen-like and classy. But not cheap lah, one tall vase is abt $100+ I think. But they claimed that their mango wood comes from the Philippines or some such place. Holland V itself has got some nice furn and soft furnishing shops. Sigh....I miss my old neighbourhood :~

  17. Final set of pictures. Master Bathroom.

Vanity with resin shelves bought at Howards and cloth baskets from Ikea.

    4680814638_c9eae65f6e.jpg

Bath/Shower area with the blinds open. Hvn't tried the bathtub yet. Am planning to put some potted plants (fake or real) on the bay window so can act as shield if someone uses the bathroom accidentally while the blinds are still open.

    4680185301_d8c3762439.jpg

Very messy WIW. Bought the wire baskets from Ikea to keep my pjs and everyday home clothes so they won't fall off the shelf. Cuz there's no room in the bedroom, had to put in the dry cabinet and locked pedestal (for personal and valuable stuff) in the WIW, making it more cramped than ever!

  18. Master Bedroom.

View from entrance, looking into the balcony and the TV wall. Was very disappointed in the wall. My ID charged me $250 for sticking some bits of plywood on the wall and painting it.

    4680189091_4cb5a52ff9.jpg

Another view, looking directly at the Yoshi bed and Serta mattress. The mattress is fantastic, by the way, and so are the pillows.

    Highly recommended.

    4680191589_4e3ca043ec.jpg

    View of the '3' moons.

    4680825410_c160b53a42.jpg

  19. The last and smallest of the common bedrooms. This is my helper's room and also the workroom.

We bought her the sofa bed (with the red covers) but she ended up sleeping on the bay window on the floor cuz it's more convenient. So she just use the sofa bed as a chill out chair.

    4680335117_0a0dc3cbf7.jpg

Pictures of the common bathroom which is currently being used by the helper. Patsy - I finally succumbed and bought the bamboo bath caddy! My hubby had to file away a bit of the bottom part so that it can fit into the space.

The solar film on the windows is DIY. True story: While I was taking pictures from my MBR balcony, a neighbour opposite my block was having a shower, how do I know this? Because I CAN ACTUALLY SEE him....! Ew....thank goodness it was blurry and can only see his torso, but still...EWWW.... His bathroom was like this one, with big windows looking out into the neighbours. If u don't put some sort of curtains or blinds or film, for sure ppl can see your shadows or bits of you when you're taking a shower! Thank goodness, for my particular layout, the bathroom looks into a void, so it's only your next door neighbour who can see. Whereas for this guy, the whole block can see him, LOL.

  20. I love the view of this wall ..

Is it real flower or plastic? May I know where did u buy the vase? :D

Looks very Zen right? :P Too bad it's going to be covered by the bookcase.

The sunflowers are fake lah....got it from this plastic flower shop at Anchorpoint (can't remember the name).

Oh, must tell you this funny thing that actually happened. The mover who carried the vase and the flowers, he actually smelled the flower and scratch the black centre part to check if it's real or not, hahahahaahaha :D

I got the vase from this shop somewhere in Siglap. Can't remember where, sorry but I do remember it has a nasi lemak factory shop just next door to it. That's as much as I can remember, if it helps :P

  21. Let's move on to the bedrooms.

This is the bedroom with the bay bed and loft bed, another major reno item. Was disappointed somewhat that my ID didn't improve on the Google Sketch I gave her, I mean, just look at those hard square corners and edges! You can cut open your head if you accidentally bump into them! If I had known how to draw rounded corners maybe it would have turned out differently???

    4680809646_d58194b6ee.jpg

There's no grilles on the windows which kinda freaked my mom out. But the windows have this safety mechanism that allows it to be opened only up to certain amount. Beyond that, need an adult to press some lever to open all the way. I myself haven't figured out how to open the windows the whole way :P

For the time being, we dun intend to put grilles but must admit, it does freak me out too when I see my youngest standing just next to the open window. So I always hv to shout at her to move away.

This is the other bedroom where my oldest sleeps. Major reno works here is the study table and the top-hung cabinets. Bookcases from Ikea. Still very messy cuz we've dumped my books here too while waiting for the other bookcase in the living room to be done.

    4680811836_b23be2fe82.jpg4680812726_cd05e3ef58.jpg

  22. More living room pictures!

Direct view of the TV console which is one of the items in my reno bill.

Didn't quite have the WOW factor I was going for, but on 2nd thots, I suppose the simple look is nice too.

    4680341957_f4aedc9e10.jpg

If you noticed, that whole wall where the TV is, is filled with stuff; TV console, then the lamp, the big mirror, the shoe cabinet and then the cushioned bench. Looks very cluttered and messy, but what to do :dunno: we have to put those things someplace, right?

This is view of the dining room from the living room. Sorry, had to censor my cutie pie's face, hee hee.

My dining set is extra special cuz it can transform itself to a clothes dryer.....NOT. Dining set still being varnished and upholstered, so for the time being, we're using this space to dry out the clothes. Charming, isn't it.... :D

    4681582244_8b623137f3.jpg

Shot of the balcony where the future flower garden will be. Right now, it's just a bicycle garden :P

    4680177467_3b28a10b0e.jpg

  23. From the kitchen to the living room.

Here's the wall immediately outside the kitchen. I'm going to put the bookcase I ordered from Nakim Homes here. Still in production in Indon.

The stool in the pic will join its cousins once the dining set is delivered.

    4680839740_d58d020d7f.jpg

View of the living room from the kitchen door. That space behind the 2-seater bench is actually the planter but haven't got round to buying the plants yet. My plan is to have a herb cum vege garden at the planter area and a flower garden at the balcony.

    4680837568_d8a1a2766f.jpg

Another view of the living room from the back of the sofa. Oops! Didn't realize can see my hubby's sarong and foot there!
