Hi pressuntilshiok, thanks for your comments! But I also found 4 of them that are not on top of any vertical support columns. If they are, I probably will accept since they are found on top shelving which we cannot really see. But I am very glad that the carpenter uncle told me he will look through and rectify. Think he will just put some wood putty?
Am in the midst of doing my carpentry as well. For the shelves, it is true that the sides and back of shelvings is exposed and is not cover by laminates. Same case for me.
As for your TV area, my guess is that the visible screw holes may be used to bind the TV top shelf to the vertical support columns.

Really hope things will turn out rite for u! All the best!
He gave very detailed "justifications" on why its the tiles' nature and need to balance all four corners of the tiles, and compensate for other connecting tiles. I told him other people's house don't have this issue and I will not accept or even pay him the next instalment until he resolve it. So he changing around 10 tiles in the bedrooms and 2 - 3 in the living room (living room less jialat). He also redo the ugly skirtings and doing another acid wash to make the grout color more even. First time I hear acid wash will cause grout color to be uneven. That's rather silly, shouldn't acid wash be avoided if it causes grout issue? He was the one who say must acid wash.
Unless I can show him someone house that uses very similar tiles as me, and is very even, else probably hard to argue. So far, I've only been to a fren who newly renovate and has very even flooring. But that's becos his house use glossy tiles and edges probably less 90degree cut. Then I went to another kind forumer's house, but her tiles were lay staggered and warping is expected in such laying method. Also trying to get a fren's tiler to come down to my house to take a look, probably after the contractor did the rectification and I still feel its not satisfactory. Sigh, I've run out of ideas... this guy is really ultimate

As the handover day draws nearer, we went over to our new place to have a thorough check.
Some defects on the carpentery work, especially on the TV top shelf were found.
CRACKED EDGE ON CABINET SLIDING DOOR
DENTS ON TV CONSOLE TOP SHELF
Just wanna check with you guys, is it a common thing for the laminates to be done on the visible areas only?
I found that the back area of my shelvings are left empty. For example, each of the shelf in my cabinet, when I took it out, only top, bottom, left n right are laminated, but not the back.
I also found some visible screwholes on the TV top shelf, like as though they put the screw in after the laminates were glued. Something like that...
I called up the carpenter and he said he will take a look. Am glad that he said he will check through.
Any idea what can he will do to resolve these problems? Any experts to shed some light here?

Here are some pictures of our study room in progress.
As this room is much smaller than its original size, we decided to get the tables and shelves built-in to save the hassel of going round to look for suitable tables!
STUDY TABLE AND SHELVES
We still have a cork pin board under first shelf not done yet. Once it is done, a cloth will be used to cover it.
PIN BOARD MATERIAL
This is very similar to what we have for our current study... just that the texture is slightly different.
MOVABLE CABINET
This cabinet is designed to be movable so that we could move it anywhere we want under our table. As we have to cater for the cable tray, the first drawer is not the same size as the rest of the drawers. It looks a little weird when moved out but I guess it should be ok since it would be under the table most of the time.
CABLE TRAY
We were thinking of ways to manage the unsightly cables that might be on the floor... so we came up with this design. All the cables will run along this tray and up the table through the opening.

True True! I shall ask my contractor! If not, I shall approach the handy man uncle I know! Think it is the sanding that can kill! hahaha
as long as you compensate him, should be ok? i think they don't mind painting but probably hate sanding. I was trying to diy some restoration and never got beyond sanding even one area.

Hi applepie, nice room for ur girl! Very sweet colour! I only installed a colourful light for mine. Hahaha anyways I am interested in the invisible grill and have a few questions to ask u.
What is the cost diff btw that n conventional grill?
Will it be easy to clean the windows after they r installed?
busy busy!
busy following up on the reno and with work.. not easy, esp i need to be home for my baby before 8pm as she'll start looking for me!
very good progress these 2 weeks i would say! almost everything is done, waiting for final touchup, chemical wash, wallpaper & mirror to be up and it'll be the big handover day!

That is another thought. Spray paint I think cannot... must remove the existing paint on the whole gate first. Think I will pay a bit more to get painter to do it. I think the painter is gonna hate me. Kept getting him to do paint job one after another. He must be thinking y cannot finish the paint job at a go. Hehehe Thanks for ur suggestion, originalbread!
Can pay extra to get ur contractor to do? Diy needs a lot of time n effort plua fear that skill no gd. (at least I got this fear when it comes to my own place). If spray paint directly can't work hoh?

Actually the gate isn't that bad with a white.
If want to repaint, got to remove any existing paint on it first... then apply some primer thingy then can paint. Seems like a tedious project. Sigh...
Remember to share how u will be diying! i'm sorely tempted to do that to our gate too hahaha
-
thanks!
Got it from Homefix at about $29 i think. I think howard storage also have something similar but at a lower price.

sorry to hear about ur unpleasant experience with them. Which branch did you go to?
We did not have problem exchaging the LED light which was too thin for our service yard at the shop next to the teochew noodle coffee shop. I guess the ic there is nicer.
Rawrr.. one week without updates.. and the first update is not a good one =(
we went lights shopping over the last week at balestier and jalan besar to purchase the items that we needed..initially we wanted to buy track lights from Chan Huat (they have SOOO many shops! Just realised that a lot of the shops that we walked into in Balestier belonged to them lol) as they told us that they have a casing that can fit LED 8W 35degree bulb (this was the bulb we wanted as we wanted a floodlight effect more than spotlight).. so we were very surprised that when we went into Chan Huat this time round, they told us that it was miscommunication..we had wanted to leave at that point, but the salesman there kept selling to us all the items and speaking in rapid Mandarin until we gave in and bought the tracklights anyway (silly decision -_-)
after this buy, we went on to Jalan Besar and walked into Megaman, and found our ideal tracklight (with the bulb specifications of 8W floodlight).. at that point, we decided to call chan huat and request for an exchange and we went back on the same day to exchange to other items, but the shop was closing so we did a very fast exchange of items to some ceiling fixtures.. during the exchange, all the staff looked so unhappy that we requested to change the items, and there was an uncle who kept speaking rudely in hokkien (thinking that we didn't understand) saying things like "*** troublesome, why did we *** sell them the lights, so *** that they want to exchange items".. We were quite shocked cox when coming into the shop, we kept apologizing to them, and explained that it was an impulse purchase so need that exchange, but their attitude was so bad - yes, perhaps our purchase isn't the biggest in the shop (the total amount was 360SGD) and after exchanging, we topped up another 7 bucks >.< - but even if our purchase wasn't big, it doesn't mean that they should be so rude to us, especially when we were smiling and apologetic and all 'paiseh' when we went into the shop - is this customer service?
this second exchange was done badly as well.. firstly they gave us casings that would rust easliy (we can't have casings that will rust easily as we are near punggol =( Humidity kills )we needed the casings to have GU10 fittings, and they did not advise us and included in the purchase transformers (which were needed only for MR16 bulbs and not GU10).. in the end this meant that another round of exchange was needed - we were also thinking of returning those that would rust and were prepared to just exchange everything in and buy one single light from them (an expensive light and just top up the remaining since it would make it easier) but at this stage, they were ultra unfriendly even though we were prepared to just buy an expensive light.. and they started arguing and scolding and refused to let us see their higher ups to see if anything can be done.. we are not requesting for a refund, we are just requesting for an exchange - which was something they said was possible when they were selling to us.. but now that we wan to do it, they got so upset.. my hubby was in there talking for an hour plus with them until Roy (our renovator) walked in and told us that our casings should be ok and should not rust..
we left without the exchanging, choosing to believe Roy.. but at that stage, we were more upset that before the purchase was made, they promised so many things and kept hard selling.. when we decided to support them and trust them for what they say and made the purchase, they had a 180 degree change in attitude and became so mean to us even when we were nice and apologetic during the first exchange.. the second exchange they decided to just flare up and hurl insults in hokkien at us (hellooo the customer is always right leh.. and somemore we were nice - why provoke us? if they can't do the exchange, then they can still tell it to us politely, we are not unreasonable people - if they had spoken to us nicely, we would have left the shop happily even if no item exchange was done.. y hurl insults???)
now looking back, we are not upset that the exchange wasn't done, but what we are upset at is that the shop people were so rude and unfriendly, not bothering to help or even be polite (why do they always have to raise their voice and hurl insults in hokkien?) don't understand their service attitude..
anyway, this post is not to flame the shop - we still don't know if the items will rust (i guess we will find out with the course of time).. this post is just to rant out frustrations caused by the rude attitudes and the hurling of hokkien insults by the people at the shop..rawrr!!!!!!!

Hi, I did not monitor while they were cleaning, but they did clean the windows, toilets, etc. If you are interested, you can call them to ask for the details.

As our kitchen is very much in the open, I hope to minimise the number of things on my sink countertop. Saw some other reno-forummers talking about their OXO products and decided to check out the brand from US. Everything looks so good!
Have since accumulated a list of at least 18 Good Grip products. Am sure Ken is not going to be pleased with that! hahaha
These are just a few items which I have gotten through my BIL who just came back from NY, Big Apple. Will get more interesting stuff soon!
01. OXO Sink Caddy + Soap Dispensing Dish Scrub + Soap Dispensing Dish Brush + Soap Dispenser
What's lacking is a normal sponge! hehe
02. OXO Large Sink Mat ::
To prevent any accidental slip and falls... in the sink! It acts as a drying mat too!
03. OXO Measuring Cup ::
Check out the video to see how cool this measuring cup is!

Our main door has been painted to the grey which was selected and this is the transformation.
From this...
to...
VIEW FROM OUTSIDE
Found the door a little too plain so I will have to add the white stripe which I mentioned earlier. The current colour of the gate got to go. That will be my DIY project when I move over. Let me try living with it first! =P
VIEW FROM INSIDE
The door stopper provided by my contractor is an eye sore. Shall try to get rid of it too!
-
Thanks girl!
The door has been painted grey... I didn't expect it to be done so soon... will go take some pictures tomorrow but contractor say cannot paint the white stripe as the door is already painted. =(
I guess I will have to think of an alternative then!
The metal door... I wanted to... grey as well but after hearing what contractor say... it will be too troublesome. Don't think it is nice to impose on them so last minute. He already did alot of last minute things for us.
Did you paint yours?
loving the new pictures u posted - the layout is totally fab =D wished i had seen your layout earlier =P den maybe can incorporate into our own as well since we got similar layout haha.. but den again.... it would probably be out of our budget as well =X
but loving the look~~ more pictures *drool*
anyway - with regards to ur door comment - i think white stripes on the door would be really nice n spcl - esp since ur house seems to have a theme of stripes (metal stripes on white wardrobe?) as well >.<
curiously, r u painting the metal door too? hehehe..

Hi, I do not have it in soft copy but all in all, our bill came up to $56+k, excluding lighting, furniture and other household items. I did not ask for a second quote from other contractors as he was recommended by our uncle who did the layout for us.
That being said, the bill might look a little expensive but I am satisfied with the work done. Even the carpentary works, which seem to be a headache for some people with other contractors / IDs, was done reasonably well! No complains at all.
As I was heavily pregnant during the reno process and could only go over during the weekends, much of the supervision was done by our contractor. We really relied on him alot!
Has gotten him to do our study too, so another $3k gone. hehehe
hello, can share your quote?

Since there was an interest in my living area, here are some pictures of it.
The TV console area is the perpendicular corner of my L-shaped kitchen sink counter and wardrobe. All in 1!
As you can see from the picture, on the right of the TV wall is the walkway to the study and bedrooms while on its left, it is the kitchen sink counter top.
TV WALL
Just realised that I don't have that many completed pictures of this area. Partly becos I was having my "confinement" when it was done.
Never mind, will post more pre move-in pictures from different angles before I move in officially!

Hi nicholas, thank you for your compliment!
The wardrobes are actually part of the rooms except for the study. Where it stands now, is the original wall of the rooms. That's why I mentioned that the rooms are "smaller" in size, especially the study room.
Here's a picture of how the wardrobe and rooms look like.
Sorry for the "ghostly" image on the glass door... that was me taking picture when it was up. Have since requested for the door to be frosted.
This is the view of the 3 rooms with the wardrobe. The very first room on the right is our study. Followed by baby's room then the MBR.
The glass door is the door leading to baby's room. Between baby's room and MBR, there is another pocket door to separate the two rooms.
Also managed to dig out this photo which shows the overall plan for my place! Love it to the max!
Hope it helps you guys to visualise better!
Very nice concept. Won't it be troublesome to have to leave the room to access the wardrobes?
Look forward to see how your living room layout is like

Was given only two choices of grey for painting the door. Decided to go with this!
Hope it turns out well!
Would it be too much to ask if I get the painter to paint some white lines on the door? Was thinking of doing 3 vertical lines of different sizes.
