  1. Avoid the agents!!!!! It is perfectly easy to settle just owner and buyer, without agents getting invoved. The HDB website gives you all the information. So, once you see a place you like, just write a letter to the owner (assuming they stay at that address) and give them your best offer. That way, you avoid the midde-men. We did it, and I'm very happy we did.

  2. My ID told me that is was possible to re-melt and mould it if it cracks, so I imagine it should be possible? I would suggest that you contact the solid surface company directly, rather than your reno company. We actually got a 10 year warranty and a free polish on our solid surface, and we can ring up supplier any time to fix. Try to find out which brand it is, and go direct.....

  3. I had e pretty bad experience with them on buying a sofa. From reading the forums, it seems many people have. I won't repost what happened, as I've written about it elsewhere. All I would say is to believe what is written by many people in these forums, and believe it. Don't be fooled. Do your research, and you won't regret it. Good luck!

  4. Serious warning .... don't buy from them ..... read all the negative comments in this forum and other online forums, and don't be as silly as I was!!!! I cannot imagine how they are still in business. I beg everyone PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM NOVENA FURNITURE.

I'd been looking in many places, and found nothing I liked, and then fell in love with things in this store. The price seemed good, the salesman very helpful, and quality looked great. I was silly and paid for the whole thing on credit card in advance, because I thought it would be easier.

Now today, it was supposed to be delivered between 11am to 3pm. They didn't come. When I call their phones I need to wait for nearly half an hour, only to get someone answer who speaks no english. They gave me a window between 11am - 3pm. They wrecked my afternoon, and because don't speak English, I cannot even talk to them properly.

Lessons: I was stupid to pay in advance. I was stupid to buy from Novena Furniture,. I should have read these forums and realised what a horrendous store it is, with bad customer service and lack of quality control.

  5. Ok, still bad service many years later ..... I cannot imagine how they are still in business. I beg everyone PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM NOVENA FURNITURE.

I read the forums, and thought maybe they have improved. I wanted to hope so, as I saw the perfect couch and dinner set in the Novena Furniture store. I'd been looking in many places, and found nothing I liked, and then fell in love with things in this store. The price seemed good, the salesman very helpful, and quality looked great. I was silly and paid for the whole thing on credit card in advance, because I thought it would be easier.

Now today, it was supposed to be delivered. They gave me a window between 11am - 3pm. I confirmed with them yesterday, and they said yes that it would be delivered. So today I waited and waited and waited, and nothing came. I rang them, and couldn't get anyone who speaks English. The delivery man rang me at 3.00 to say he would come at 3.30. Seriously this is stupid! I paid $55 for delivery, and they have a four hour window for delivery, and still they cannot get it right. I complained, and no apology even. They wrecked my afternoon, and even what they delivered is different from the photo and what I saw in the showroom. I wanted to complain, but cannot as they guy just left it in my dining room, and he couldn't speak any English either, so what was the point?

  6. Sure I chose Ecobonz series with a heavy duty swing door style. I was thinking of bi-fold, but I had enough space for a swing door, and I felt it would be easier to use, and less maintenance in the long term. I felt their prices were reasonably competitive, and include installation, frame and warranty. Price will differ by type of door you want, so best to contact them directly. I wrote to about 5 places (including Champion Republic which advertise in these forums), and Ministry of Door was on the cheaper side for something of comparable quality. The install and were very pleasant to deal with, unlike some others I approached.

  7. TiriciaTan makes a great points... choose an ID that has been established for many years, and no hard pushing. I visited many may IDs and you can really 'feel' the difference after your see so many. Get someone you can trust 100% and is on the ball. Try to negotiate hard on terms, get a deadline for completion as part of the contract, and good warranty. If you can, try to see an example of their workmanship from a past or current project. Then, once it starts, visit the project often, and speak up if things are different from your expectation so that things can be rectified fast and that the the subcontractors know that you are not a pushover.

Good luck! I have had a really enjoyable renovation experience with my chosen ID. PM me if you want the details. I've made an open-concept kitchen, redone living/dining space, new built in wardrobes in each bedroom, and new bathroom cabinets. Really happy with outcome :)

  8. I went to 3D Innovative when I was looking for quotes. I visited about 8 different interior designers for quotes, and 3D was one of my shortlisted three finalists.

I liked their Ubi show room, and I initially liked the feel from the IDs there. There prices were quite reasonable, and they appeared to understand the style that I wanted, and were knowledgeable about their products. However, I found that their responsiveness to my detailed questions was quite slow, and that was a sign to me that I would look elsewhere, as I needed an ID who was totally on the ball and not run off their feet with too many projects, or looking for "easy" clients. 3D Innovative is a very big design house with many designers, whereas the final ID firm I chose is quite small - just the business owner and one assistant ID. The price was less, and the responsiveness much better. If you want details, PM me.

    Good luck with the choices

  10. Has anyone experienced how hard it is to clean mosaic tiles? How does price compare to t-glass? And any nice photos to share?

I want to put something special in the kitchen, and at the moment have tempered glass. I thought of changing it to a red / green bright colour, but it seems to gawdy. Mosaic tiles sound nice, but I don't know if they are practical or economical. I would love to hear.

  11. Hi Khim and Mkina,

I am talking primarily about radon gas .... it is more from the natural stones (such as granite), rather than the engineered stones. Most quartz is 90% man-made, so it would have less emissions than the granite. However, if the quality is dubious, say an unknown brand / odd country manufacturer, I wouldn't be so sure about the emissions. You can get a radon gas monitor if you are really concerned, or else choose a stone where the manufacturer gives a guarantee of the levels of gas emitted.

Don't be too worried, just be aware :)

  12. My ID also did a wonderful job with 5-room HDB .... but I did a lot of research first .... I found it hard to find anyone who would 'highly recommend' their IDs, so I'm so glad to see that a few people would. I also highly recommend mine. You got to pick someone who is attentive to details, and willing to make changes, and good price. Doing your research with a few is the most important, and check out their past projects so you get a feel for their quality and wormanship.

I also found it helpful to make sure I could 'add' new clauses into their contract so speciify a handover date and the brands used of all products. That way, there was full aligned on both sides, and I had recourse to take legal action should something differ from the contract. Thankfully, my ID was a champion, and it came in under budget and delivered way above my expectations. Happy to share details if needed.

  13. I want to do this as well!!! I've seen hanging wine glass racks in a few bars, but they are industrial scale! Ikea have a side mounted wine glass rack, but I'm really looking for one which can "hang" from underside of overhead cabinet. Has anyone had success?

  14. I didn't have the best experience with them either .... but that was more to do with quality and flexibility of their products, rather than the service. I did find them quite prompt and attentive. I have to say though (yes a shameless plug for something I wrote about in another thread) that the Ministry of Door is highly recommended for bi-fold or swing doors. Much better range, and I feel can be more sturdy than the PD door. Every time I try to use the PD door, I nearly break them, because of the swing-slide model.

  15. Maybe you can change your windows to sliding and then install the netting. this way you can easily slide open the window panel by lifting up the netting at one corner.

why don't you just do a aluminium grilles? invisible grilles will have to be tension tightly every once awhile, and like what you said it cannot be open at all. harder for you to do anything for this area. :)

Thank khim. Maybe I should see about sliding windows .... I was trying to save money, but I guess maybe I need to just re-think the whole thing!!!! Who would you recommend for windows?
