Living Room Storage Incl Tv Console

Recommended Posts

Hi! Need advice on a good living room storage solution pl ...:)

At first, I like IKEA BESTA solution a lot (price, modular design and accessories) but after visiting their showroom, like a bit flimsy like that (doors were slanted, hinges a little loose, surface chipping off here and there). is this an indication of quality? Some of my frens say that's because the showroom model has been open and closed by thousands of ppl so of course condition is not expected to be good. But i think if the showroom model also like that, then quality must be quite suspect? Pl correct me if I'm wrong

I then went to ID and they quote me $250-300 pfr, so that's about double the IKEA cost. Still ok if A+ quality, but problem is I also cannot be sure because no ready product to see and touch.

So aside from IKEA, are there other furniture stores with ready-made living room storage systems, preferably modular so can semi-customise? I got some bookshelves systems from v.hive b4 and quite happy with the quality, lasted 10 years. But I don't think they do full height living room storage...

Appreciate any advice on what systems are available out there. Thanks!!

Ikea uses chipboard and mass produced. Therefore they are much cheaper than local custom made furniture which uses mostly plywood with laminates. Ikea furniture like my 10 year old office bookshelf do last to be fair to them, except for some swelling at the base as chipboard cannot take water. Some furniture contractors can make simple tv consoles plus basic feature wall at good rates from $200 to 220 pfr up to 300+ if you know where to find. ID will charge more since they have to mark up.

Hello Hobbietan,

we also have the same idea to have a tv console cum storage kind of concept. except that we want to really make to measure because we want to hide the tv inside the storage place and have the storage cabinets disguised as a feature wall. you are right that made-to-measure storage concepts are more expensive (designed to suit your living room, plywood and not chipboard). we approached 10 IDs and their prices are....(I don't need to say)....since we already have some ideas, we had approached carpenters and contractors. hopefully it will work for us. Still waiting for response and evaluating. I must say that some of the Ikea furniture esp those with arcylic finishes are very nice...maybe we will eventually still go for that...Ikea furniture are not eliminated from our list yet.
