  1. Haha...these pics i was looking forward to. :dribble:

Eh, one u ceiling mount on the L-Box, the other on the wall? How come ur rear speakers cant view??

u self install izit? i wanna see how far u put them back.

my little concern with wall/ceiling mount speakers are aesthetics.

Worried dun go with the reno. But urs looks fine. Main thing must have power!:jammin:

ur centre speaker seems to be above ear level above the TV right? Dialogue comes out sharp and clear?

Mine also abt entry level only nia...GG more power wor if he gets the system he desires. :good:

Whoa....you guys really like to 'pump' up the volume ya? Is there some kind of soundproofing in place or not?

  2. Hi all

Just like to ask 1 question. Does mounting air con on top of the room door, does it post any type of hindrance or problem? Any advantages or disadvantages?

    Feedback are most welcome..

Not a problem for me though, brother. I have one that is currently above a door in one of my bedroom.

  3. Current colour is dark brown, but I'm planning to make new cushion covers, mbe in yellow  ? or just plain white or khaki?

I'm just thinking that the last quote I got to varnish the table (+6 chairs) was $1,200 :(

If I do the maths, I might be better off just buying a new dining set :D

I am not sure if you can get anything like a six-seater dining set for $1.2K nowadays. I would stick to the current set of chairs that you have got and they are a timeless piece from the picture. Will surely go with your bling bling hanging from the ceiling.

  4. Hi Bro..

point 1 : wall tiles.. be it toilet or kitchen tiles.. i suppose is the quality of the tiles.. the kitchen is still better then the toilets.

    Point 3: Yup..

Case 1: replacing new windows and grills.

My rooms and kitchen is this case. Sequence is remove old grills, replace windows, paint, install grills.

Case 2: retain windows but replace grills.

My Living room and dining area is this case. my sequence is paint, remove old grills and install grills. I've asked if need to remove grills 1st and was told only installer of grills wld remove grills and pianters hv small brush.. end up some places not painted. i asked painters also and NO they do not hv fine brushes. The smallest brush they hv is abt 3-4cm wide.. tmy advice, ask the contractor to remove the old grills before paint.

Case 3: retain both windows and grills.

Good luck on the painting.. HA..

Painting wise, they are not that good at painting boundary of windows, and walls.. and grills of coz.. so sure kana.. and dun believe when contractor says if 1 pl patched/dirtied, they hv to paint the whole wall.. which is not going to happen.. and no painting in 1 direction etc huh.. painting is fast and furious one.. Ha..

point 5: they laminted the sides u see only.. top and bottom is nothing. same as painted doors. Also, please check the doors (from bottom to top) for defects after they mount onto the hinges and before installing the handles etc. I have 3 defects on my main door, 1 small hole facing inside and 2 defects in the laminate facing out. i asked the guys who installed the doors and said it would be patched before applying final coat of protection. end up is not patched. Solid wood to them means is not plywood/chipwood etc. is just cut to size wood. dun expect them to use oak wood etc right? Ha..

point 6: If you plan to have dowlights in living room etc, plaster the walls or at least that area. like Simon had said, plastering the whole unit cost $1.5 est..

Henry said is the fashion now.. w no handles loh.. the "handle" is top for bottom doors and bottom for top cabinates. Side for the box up of pipes.

Ha.. i didn't say all the defects yet leh.. some 1 hv to leave with it.. some i wan make sure rectified.

e.g my water pipes from crooked from kitchen to toilet. Not nice and is potential for leaks in future.. and they piping guys cracked 2 tiles while drilling and keep quiet.. they just "plaster" it up.. i saw last sun when i bought my own ladder and climb up to clean the tiles..

e.g the stupid grills guys rivet the grills to my windows causing leaks when raining. it was rectified by applying only silicion at the rivet, which i dun know can last how long, which is rectified after kana 5 days of rain!.. and shld know.. no preventive measure was taken to stop the water from reaching my white cupboards k..

The question now is did i pay $35k for such works.. which some is just patch job to get the handing over done?

    Brother fencer,

I am speechless after reading this post. Your first hand experience with the painters serves an invaluable insight and lesson for us all. What was Henry's reaction after highlighting these to him?

    Regards.

  5. i get your point of view..but i find it extremely difficult to actually want the team to roll over and die to prevent the mancs from winning the title. "where's the spirit lads?" - el nino, you should find this statement familiar? lol.

anyway if chelsea fans were reading this, they'd probably say "thanks but no thanks, our team will do just fine without you having to play your reserves." sad to say, we're playing some crap football this season.

I think Liverpool would count themselves lucky if they can get a draw out of this game, reserve players or not. Chelsea at the moment are flying and they should win this game against Liverpool and go on to win the league.

  6. lol.... It's a basin plus countertop plus tap so this price

in the end we did not engage a fsm, hubby has a fren who helped us "survey" our place and we can safely go ahead wif our idea

What's a froggy tap by the way? It seems like you, El Nino and Angteko speaking the common language known among yourselves. Mind showing me a picture, champion?

  7. I almost bought those chairs in fabric, think they said can make in fabric, not sure though... decided against it coz my table is already so heavy and bulky wanted a more streamlined chair...like the Sawa chair a lot!!

Agree with you on this, Patsy. Think the chair looks nice too without the white cushion.

    Cheers.

  8. Thanks, Zelly! It's a cool idea but I think it will clash with my resort-like sofa set :P, but I do agree about keeping the dining area elegant.

I'm surfing the net to get some ideas on what is 'modern contemporary resort' :D

It's a good thing I didn't design my own house - I think it will end up very obit with mismatched furniture and looks!!!!

Lol :D Wouldn't it be great if hubbies just stay out from the furniture selection, and leave it all to us wifeys or wife-to-be? But my hubby told me str to my face tt he doesn't trust my selection, and to be frank, sometimes I don't trust myself either! :D:D

Oh, such a feminist! How could you? Wouldnt it be great if the other half is involved in the selection process? In that way, you can benefit from more ideas. Two heads are better than one, no? Is arrogance the common trait among the red devils?

    Cheers.

  9. Me too... already tabs yours.. kekekeke.... can't wait to see your transformation.

Oh... i tot their price for electrician quite reasonable, i have the list... pm me your email add if you want it.

I was quoted $900 for plastering, sealant, painting w/house, ceiling, piping, door frame, doors, varnished main door(unlimited colours since ID said you cant have rainbows colours for every wall) basically, anywhere we want to paint also can.

    Brother,

Seems like $900 can do wonders. Is the service provider independent? Or it comes in a package from the contractor?

    Hey sis fiend,

Thanks for the Soon Bee Huat contact. I think before you know it, your renovation would have been completed already going at this rate.

I predict the hardest part of this renovation process is not the renovation per se but the selection of the ideal furniture to fit into your SOHO theme instead.

    Cheers.

  10. LOL... yes, Planning is an issue.

Quite true hor. Ermm... Don't know if a solid door will helps or not. I already ordered 3 hollow veneer door le.

If it helps maybe can change. At first, we thought of placing the partition wall the other side but was told it might be glaring cos windows will be behind us.

Drawing was given after we signed.. Understand that Lilithfiend got it before. Efficient PM le...

    Brother infinite,

Nice 3Ds you got there. I specially like the space behind the partition and probably it can double up as a cozy corner with an enclosed glass wall? The greyish colour scheme is somewhat similar to Brother Angteko; nice too. Tell us more with your space planning in your next post, I think it is going to be interesting.

    Cheers.

  11. I had posted a help notice in the Reno Forum for my dining chair dilemma.

Pls do give your comments and opinions either here or at the original post.

    TIA!

Thought the current set of wooden chairs goes very well with the wooden dining table, gives a country impression. Am curious and interested to see if you can find new chairs to complement your dining table. Good luck in your search!

    Cheers.

  12. Today my sofa arrived. Wife was very satified with the workmanship and the color she chose.

But, they sent me the wrong L side!! :bangwall:

Apparantly, is the sales girl wrote the wrong side, but drew the correct side. :curse:

How come I always so suay!!

Now must wait for them to exchange. :furious:

Show us the pictures once the right L side arrives.

    Thanks.

    Cheers

  13. for mio TV, the set top box is it connected to the cable TV point or RJ45 / tel point?? :dunno:

this season's BPL and La Liga so great that im very tempted to get mio for next season's soccer season. :bangwall:

normally is just 2yrs contract right? so if i sign this year, can last till 2013 hopefully by then the content sharing between Starhub and Singtel would have kicked in, and i can terminate Singtel set top box...hmmm....

Thought that starhub offers La Liga and Serie A as well in the next season? What is in store under Mio TV for sport channel? Looks like we will have to tune to RTM 1 for World Cup this coming June.

    Cheers.

  14. Reno Day 01

Hacking starts today! We'll go down to see see on Wednesday..

It has been a mad busy weekend..

    Electrician Site Visit

we met up with the electrician Jaskel recommended on Saturday, ran thru our requirements with him and he gave us a rough price quote. Now waiting for his official email quote.

    Tiles Selection - Round One

Also met up with our PM on Saturday at Lian Seng Hin to see tiles for our bathroom. I was pretty hesitant to decide because the HDB permit has yet to be approved and our PM said while its better to order soon, she can also wait until the permit approval comes thru. So anyway after fighting the crowds on both levels and being disappointed with the range available, we picked out a few tiles we "sort of" liked, got the samples and got out of there.

We headed off to the coffeeshop next door and had drinks. We reminded our PM about the little piping sticking out under the kitchen sink and she promised to check it out. We paid her the 40% commencement fee and got a bit more clarification on the coordination of various works (aircon, electrical, plastering etc). She shared that each reno project will inevitably have mistakes which she might overlook, and told us that if we spot any, to inform her so they can correct it, no need to argue/fight/quarrel. :argue: I thought it was good of her to set our expectations right from the start to prevent tensions during the reno..

Hb told her we want to have retractable window grilles (aka scissors style), she said she will check. I told her we'd like to know how the double hung windows would function and she said that she would show us the technical drawing when they submit to HDB for window installation approval.

    Hob, Hood & Oven Ordered

We also ordered our kitchen equipment at *** Gallery along Balestier Road. We initially were ready to order at Adamas but unfortunately (for them), the hobs we wanted were out of stock. So we headed to *** Gallery cos I remembered seeing the Cuizino logo outside the shop. On reaching there, we realised that this is one of the shops our PM said they would give a discount if we show them her namecard.

    Tiles Selection - Round Two

Headed to Soon Bee Huat @ Changi Road on our own on Sunday. Liked the tiles here better, or maybe it was the lack of crowds that we liked..lol. Anyway, found a mixture of tiles, played around with the samples last night and we think we might have found our tiles for the bath. Hopefully the prices are ok for the contractor.

Only seems like yesterday when you got your house keys and asking fellow forumers for opinion regarding certain aspects of your house. Now you got the renovation under way already, it's really fast-chop, chop, I guess.

Is Soon Bee Huat any better? What is the address?

    Cheers.

  15. Some info that might be useful to some of you..

    1) Alot of the wall tiles's "white powder" had turned abit yellowish (Some seriously decolored). Was told is from the tiles itself.. Henry said bo bian.. is like that 1. So choose your tiles properly.. the tiler once said "China made" ones is very prone to this problem... Can't believe it! Before move in change color oledi.. sigh... bo bian loh.. if you see this, feedback asap for it to be repatched coz was told cannot patch anymore, the new powder cannot "hold" onto the old powder.

    2) For old flats, if you choose to replace the windows, please know new windows is not as "thick" as the walls.. And guys putting up windows dun patch nice nice the walls to window parts 1 hor.. at least for my case lah.. mayb i special.. ahhaha.. Also, for me only, when raining, water do not flow out of the "vents". Water accumulate at the centre of the window.. only those reaching the vent at the side goes out.. coz old flat? Ha.. mayb is me.. feedback but was forgotten.

    3) For old flats, new window grills will cover the new windows.. sui sui one.. but can see the bad patching skills outside of the grills/windows.. also.. MAJOR ADVICE.. ask contractor to remove all window grills well before painting, so can paint PROPERLY around the windows surrounding.. window guys come after painting mah.. and dun believe when some1 says sure can one.. the painters hv small brush, can paint the small gaps etc.. even corridor units, who will break in to steal paints, tiles? fyi. freaking grill guys punched holes into the windows to secure the grills. Caused 2 leaks which lasted for new days before it was patched up only with silicone. wonder how long it would last.. sigh...

    4) After having Kitchen's windows replaced, tell contractor to tell everyone working near the area to cover the ledge of the windows with something before work. I had a bad time cleaning out all the bits and pieces of cements and dirt and paints from the window ledges.. now the windows do not open smoothly like new ones.. work done above the ledge, includes piping guys, grill installations, painting and patch work if any.. and dun believe that the cleaners got blower to blow the bits out..

    5) Wood use for all doors and door frames is the same.. cheap wood.. is just the design. Most important abt this, they would bring in the doors, fix up 1st. After then paint the doors without removing it from the hinges. So know this, the top and bottom of the doors is not painted at all.. so for me, my main door wic is prone to kana rain.. hv to protect it myself with towels etc.. Also door frame, kana water would hv yellowish color come out.. cheap wood mah.. how to waterproof? just paint loh..

    6) Have dowlight? plaster the walls.. at least the walls having dowlights.. HAhahah..

    7) Last.. small prob lah.. electrician just applied silicon to seal the trunking. But that day the grill guys was working also.. so he drilled the walls.. end up the flakes got "caught" in the silicon.. today spend 1 hr to take out the whole row and apply again..

Rem you have the rights to tell the workers to be careful for certain things like cover the ledge when working above etc.. if not, feedback to contractor immed. Is your own responsibilty to do your own checks.. Ha.. of coz you nd to be there before they start to warn them..

Which i try to be there most of the times but no use coz dun know the consequence.. so i hope friends dun kana like me.. Hahah.. or i special again.. Hahha..

Thanks for the warning! For point 1, are you referring to your kitchen wall tiles? For point 3, are you saying painting should be completed first before installing the window grilles? Point 5 refers to painting of doors, arent the doors laminated in the first place? What do you by cheap wood for doors? Arent they solid wood? Dont quite understand point 6, please elaborate brother.

Your kitchen looks good now that it is completed with kitchen top. Cant really tell if the kitchen tiles are slanted. I notice that your kitchen cabinets dont have handle, so you opt to open from the top? Any more carpentry works to show or not?

Overall your house looks good but just that there are some hiccups along the way which I think are not important as long as the house is tastefully done up.

    Cheers.

  16. True that...but not all can be in black and white.

Imagine, prior to start of certain works, we have to stop for abit and wait for the black and white to be drafted then both parties sign in agreement and so forth...too much paper and trees wasted leh. :(

hahaha...end of the day, trust, patience and understanding very important ingredients in reno! :)

Agree. Not everything can be stated in black and white. If there was an intention to cheat in the first place, so what if everything had already been stated in black and white? And yes, we are governed and maybe protected by the law but if there is any screw up arising from a transaction, there can only be one outcome-more resources will be expended in the process.

Trust and Understanding go hand in hand and I think biz people (contractors in this context) appreciate this relationship.

    Cheers.

  17. my next big damage is done....sanitary ware. ;)

went GR Link and was served by Jasmine. Both Benny and her are very very nice friendly and helpful people. Jasmine patiently answered every questions we have and make suggestions as well. Best thing is..... price is definitely a plus point. :good: hubby & friend are pretty impressed by them as well. seems like RT did it again, a good recommendation!! :good:

After 2 hours there, we made the following purchase with Jasmine (with the promise to come back for more. :deal: )

    - Cassanova 1 piece WC x 2

    - Tuscani Robusto Bidget spray x 2 with angle valve

    - Alpha instant heater x 2

    - Nobel waterfall tower tap (Angteko refer to as the frog tap)

    - Viva complete glass bowl set (tempered glass basin + tempered glass countertop with stainless steel bracket + facuet)

    - L-bar for the glass bowl set

    Total: $1,500 :dancingqueen:

shall upload the pics soon cos pics in hubby handphone...

Wow....happy shopping over the weekend already? Show us the pictures please. By the way, where is GR Link? Are the taps all water efficient?

    Cheers.

  18. we know u got do homework one la, if not everyone wun be asking you questions liao lor...haha

planning early is important...like the saying: "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail"

    Very profounding indeed.

  19. If I tell CLC, they sure grumble grumble to me loh, somemore is my choice of outsourcing electrician mah. And they arent in good terms since 1st day, sure use this chance to shoot them. haha

Anyway, I think i should inform CLC abt this. I'm not so worry abt the skill of patching, i'm more worried if he is able to get my wallpaper.

Later really cannot get, and need to indent, takes another 2 wks, then I faint. :D

Eh..england, dont say until so jia lat leh, only simple work, and i think wallpaper work not that difficult. Take it easy, no point fuming. haha

It is just the connection point of the extension suspected not done properly. It just affect channel 5 & 8 currently, and if I dont use starhub, it should be fine.

But I think better to get them done properly, just in case in future i decided to use starhub? ;)

Well, you are right that there's no point fuming; better to get things fixed. It's more like disappointment when everything is so perfect towards the end.

I guess it is not too late to get the connection point fixed if you need Starhub in the future. There is no hurry, right?

  20. The race to the title is not won until the fat lady sings :D

Talking abt Chelsea, I find it ironical that Mourinho was fired from Chelsea coz he failed to bring the team to Champions League victory, and just a few days ago Inter Milan beat title holders Barcelona in the semis. I just find it hysterical. Hope rumours that he will take over from Ferguson is true. I admire the man (Mourinho, that is) and he's good-looking to boot. As for Fergie, I've never forgiven him for driving Beckham out of Man U, leading him to do all that crazy stuff in LA. He's a caricature of his old great self and his wife is not helping :(

Anyway, back to reno updates. Lightings will be delivered today instead of Friday. Haven't been to the house for nearly a week already, and am missing it :P

Will post pictures of the dining lights and fans later tonite.

Congrats if Mourinho goes to Man Utd when Sir Alex retires though I prefer very much that he goes to Liverpool instead. Chances are Mourinho will prefer Man Utd than Liverpool. Good luck to Man Utd this season, they are a lucky bunch if they win it this season. And yes, the fat lady sings for them and always, when comes to the crunch.

Your exquisite taste includes pretty boys too!

    Looking forward to your pictures.

    Cheers.

  21. england: squatting toilet that funny?! pls tell me mine's not the first you've seen!

we won't have 3D pictures for the rest of the house since we don't have alot of carpentry...our renovator only gave us this set cos we requested for it. think they will give us one more set of kitchen cabinet 3Ds, thats all..

It's the sight of the whole picture. The colour, the broom and all other 'accessories' in the picture, not so much of the squat pit-hole (not that I havent seen one before, gawd)

    Shall laugh no more.

Yes, show us all your 3D kitchen picture. By the way, I like the colour used in the 3D pictures. The colour of the flooring looks good too but I am not sure will the colour be the same on the actual concrete screed floor. Can it be done?
