Hi there,
Our girls are already 6 & 9 this year, so no long the toddler stage where we have to child-proof everything. Haha
Anyway, we did consider the durability and practicality of the furniture. Can't have it too childish design, cos they will outgrow it in 2-3 years time .
For their room, we let them have a say in the wall color, their bedsheet design, as well as the laminate for their build in wardrobe (with some influence from us 😜).
Oh, you've an easier time then, mine are 2 mths old & 3 yrs old, I've to plan from this age to like...5 yrs down? Playroom must be able to convert to study room & then to granny's room.
Anw, look forward to ur updates.

Hi wanderwan, how much how much?

Hi! Fellow family-with-kids-&-small-budget forumer. I'm also doing Reno now & I know how it is to think child-safe, long term durable, practical yet...nice? I just haven't had time to start the blog due bcos busy researching to keep everythg I listed above.
Hi 5!

Thanks for your advice.... Both electricians I spoke to seem reluctant to take on rewiring. 1 said have to pull & another said don't know where the wires might be running so will need some time to do the work.
I'm not hacking the 2nd floor parquet & with a timeline of 6 wks, guess is a challenge for them.

Hi, need to seek the regulars' expert opinion. My new house is a double storey terrace about 20 yrs old & we're considering if we should rewire the entire house, since we're doing extensive renovation before moving in.
We do have a tight timeline & we're not upgrading to phase 3 electrical. Isit a must, good to have, or don't need to spend money, for the rewiring?
Most appreciate sharing your experience or views here. Thanks!

for a planter below 50sqft installers dont go by psf. but expect around 1.5k for accoya wood.
Hi Morganwu, what is your view on chengal vs accoya wood? The latter I understand is quite new, my contractor hasnt heard of it before when I mentioned to him.

Hi OnTheRoad, yes those are cement patterned tiles. You can find them at Hup Kiong (next to Hafary, Balestier Rd) or An Huat Trading at 53 Zion Road. My contractor initially brought us to Hup Kiong, but they sell it at $4.50 per piece. Later we found that An Huat is cheaper, they sell at $3.50/pc, cos they are the supplier. So we got our tiles from An Huat.
Thanks! Saw it in Hup Kiong & initially wanted them for toilet tiles... But told it's porous etc so gave up. Nice I like. Looking fwd to ur completed kitchen look soon.

Hi Kingpin,
In addition to the useful info by sandywu, do consider the following:
1. Engage the pest control company for anti-termite treatment before tiling starts.
2. Factor in other items such as auto-gate, awnings, alarm system...
3. Many of the items can be sourced directly, eg decking & listed in (2). Can save some costs there.
Just sharing as I'm doing reno for my own terrace too.

Saw one at Lite Fusion as well.
-
Hi! Where did you get those nice tiles for your backsplash from? Are those cement ones?
-
I think Ikea sells some basin & cabinet combos, but not sure if there's bowl basin cos I saw mainly rectangular ones in te catalogue.
-
Nice transformation! Like ur choice of toilet tiles...
-
Hi Michele, Pm u already. I'm engaging one for my new house.
-
Hi Hin, nice reno! Condition of ur house before didn't look that bad actually...isit a cluster or terrace if you don't mind me asking?
-
Hi Valerie, I checked on the partial wall tiles & paint for toilets, was told its not practical for our climate & hard to maintain... What does ur contractor say? If doable, it'll be something nice I can do with the subway tiles look too...
-
Looking good! I'm staying tuned for the finished product.
-
Hi piknik, if u install the skylight beside the windows, methinks it wld not be as nice as if installed at an enclosed area....like stairwell or corridor.
-
Ya....sadly...cannot find this size. There goes my checker...
Hi Ipineapple, thought I saw the checkered tiles in Hup Kiong Balestier, right at the back of the shop, can check it out... I like ur toilet theme & will prob be doing the same thing too.
Btw saw ur post on another thread re the white EM chairs. Lush now selling at $110 each promo price, can check it out.
-
Oh dear, tks for blowing the whistle & hope u managed to find someone else to finish up the works.
-
Hi poem,
Actually you can search for some suppliers directly & call for quotes. Kitchen tops are one, tiles just go to Hafary showroom.
As for wcs, basins, these are not in the quote anyway, so can shop around.
-
Hi Perthy, keep us updated if you're going ahead with Kompactop. It'll be a nice change to plain solid surfaces.
Of you like sleek, maybe can consider stainless steel? I saw in a few websites & looks good!
-
Hi All, wondering what's ur experience with the pest control companies so far...I need to engage one soon & got a quote from Rentokil at promo price of 3.2k & another company that's 800 cheaper. Same warranty of 5 yrs for both.
Is there really a difference in effectiveness of the chemicals they use?

Signed the OTP for this unit last March with high COV(2011, ya more than a year ago)
My first appointment was one or two week before the GE2011 and YES, my area is the most talk about and contested GRC. Guess you guys know where is my place already.
And good or bad (still dun know), during my second appointment i became a HAMMER from a THUNDER! Many worries like property value drop or etc...., but no choice bought already so LL! Have to think possitive.
The owner is also one of a kind. Wanted us to give them extension for 4 months, so out of good will i agreed (since i'm not hurry to move). but lucky they found their unit less than two months.
The most DL things happened after they moved out, i found lots of discrepancies. Really want to use vulgar words, but better not in public media (though i scolded them now in my mind).
The marble floor is fully of scratches, windows leak when its rain and balcony wall plaster falling apart. ****, we were cheated. The owner used some non water-proof normal plaster to plaster the windows area and balcony when he was selling the house, so non of us noticed.
Now when its rain my living will kenna "ponding"! Not every fifty years but everytime. @#$%!@@
After paying high COV this is what i get. Warning to people who going to buy the resale house, please check thorought esp during the 2nd viewing. If i know its such a problematic house, i will not pay such high COV to them.
Ya..then came the cooling measure from government. I should have waited till GE is over then start looking for house.
Anyway this is the story of my house purchase experience. Expensive lesson. Hope things will get better.
Howeever, have no regret of this apartment:
-The environment is pretty good (minus the annoying neighbour dogs which keep barking everytime someone walked past their door. Don't know why they like to open their door knowing their dogs like to bark at people. Hope the dogs will die soon. Me very evil hor but it's really annoying. )
-Mine is a walk up unit (not elder citizen friendly), so no left and right neighbour. My very own personal space, very secluded i like. My floor has only 2 units each at a corner.
-An unique huge curvy balcony, so i can have my alfresco coffee session.
-North East facing so no afternoon sun.
Thinking of these factors made me feel better after all the unpleasant events happened.
This is the floor plan of my unit. Very challenging to do space planning. Took me many rounds of alternation.
The positive side of lightning becoming hammer is that the residents get to benefit since both will work harder to prove themselves or to win back the constituency. Don't worry!
