congrats!! =) enjoy creating your own home! :D

  2. Day 131

The backsplash guys finally came to install the new 'white' backsplash..it was another supplier, but still late as usual..only half was changed as the other side had wrong holes drilled..the other side will be installed next Monday and hopefully, we're done with renovation.

The hinges of our tall cabinet is already showing signs of wear and tear after moving in for a week..the soft closing can't be closed fully by itself at times..*sigh* i suppose we'll have to save up to change our carpentry a few years down the road.. ;)

Here's the color difference between the 'white' and previously installed backsplash..photo taken with iPhone.

  3. Hi "theitsybits" can I have K's contact too? thanks very much.

    pm-ed

    Hi theitsybits,

I have been browsing through this forum for quite awhile trying to gain an insight into what ideas I can implement for my new home which will be ready in 2013. While there have been some impressive design ideas, none has attracted my attention more than your simplistic but gorgeous Swedish-inspired home. Love the fact that you did all of it without engaging an ID. This has inspired me to design on my own even though I am rather new in this aspect.

I hope you would be kind enough to PM and share with me Mr K's contact? Sincerest thanks!

hello, glad scandinavian designs are coming up..and sadly, not many IDs get it yet and it may pay to do some research and get someone to do it your way.. :) pm-ed.

  4. Hi there, love ur reno journey....

    Read up all ur posts...

And fine house u have there....

Since mr k is a contractor...du u mind pm/email me his contact no?

Ive to go with a contractor rather than id...sine its a bit cheaper this way...

    Seriously budget constraint....

Hello pm-ed you his contact..he's cheaper than the IDs I went to but not the cheapest contractor though value-for-money..

  5. Thanks all to the replies and ideas.

Anyone engaging outside cleaners to clean before moving in?

I am fussy sort and prefer to do my own, but... it does feel tempting to get one layer of dirt cleaned off and then I can clean once more.

Or is the contractor's chemical wash good enough?

We did get another cleaner in to clean after chemical wash..it's really dirty, especially the windows and inside the carpentry..cleaning all corners in carpentry is already hard work..chemical wash would only clean your floors and some general cleaning..

  6. Of White and white and WhITES

Went to my home today to discuss with the carpenter about the carpentry and saw workers installing the huge glass door for my kitchen entrance and white louvre doors for the toilets.

    7e3777a677308db2dec3dc0d9ddb05f5_zps8313589f.jpg

They were also there to re-install the windows which I rejected as they have a blue hue. Mr. K explained to me that it is because the windows are made of aluminum so, without any special spray painting, the "white" will naturally carry a blue hue. I saw the same blue hue on the white windows in my brother's flat so i believe this is true. I accepted that as my lack of knowledge and willingly requested for him to change the windows to aluminum color at my cost. He also asked if I would like to continue with white for the kitchen door and the white louvre doors for the toilets, which I confirmed to continue with white. At that time, Mr. K immediately informed the folks for the kitchen and louvre doors to spray paint these items white as I want them to be white-white, not carrying any blue hue. :thumbs up: Thumbs up to Mr. K for pre-emping the problem.

Unfortunately, the louvre doors still came with a blue hue as shown in the pic below. :furious:

The kitchen door, on the other hand, did not have the blue hue. So, I watsapped Mr. K about it and he would look into the matter tomorrow.

Arh... Sometimes, I wonder if it is due to my previous profession which trained me to have a keen eye for colors (we had a whole row of colors tabs with different shades of a color, say blue, and had to arrange them from the lightest to darkest... Always loved doing that and checking my score thereafter... ). I am rather particular about colors matching. With many more white items in different materials coming up, I wonder if I will go crazy later... hahahaa.... :P Another lesson learnt.

I think it looks white too..it might be the greenish hue from the windows that makes it look less white?

Ay, contractors are generally less precise on quotes than IDs..and I suppose do need to check and ask what materials are used..I wouldn't say Mr K is 100% but maybe 95%..and at least he's prompt with good attitude which makes renovation a much more enjoyable process.. =)

The place is looking good!! I've moved in! Invite me over if u're there evenings or weekends! =p

  7. Hi itsy, your blog has been amazing.

How did you find this mr k in the first place and do pls send me his contact.

We were about to sign w an Id, but for some reason could not bring ourselves to do it.

Could you tell me your total cost for works w mr k?

Our Id quoted us about 4500 for tiles of a balcony, kitchen and store room...

Anyway, can't you take your bad carpenters to small claims court?

    Just a thought...

Some bad eggs really get away w their bad deeds unscathed!!

we got to know him from other renoblogs - pinkwhale and paloma and has visited both their place, talked to them about renovation and Mr K before deciding on him..for one, we love all his projects..most importantly we feel comfortable with him..and seeing that he's still on good terms with his customers say a lot about him..

IDs are generally more expensive..but Mr K is slightly above market rate for contractors though cheaper than other ID quotes..workmanship and attitude wise was pretty good, not much of complaints..

    hi critter

I have done fengshui audit before renovation, package is $688, do lots of stuffs regards of fengshui layout, even seal up my kitchen entrance as my kitchen facing the main door is no good, custom make a mirror in the living room, cannot put shoes higher than your head at the shoe cabinet, buy stuffs at bencoolen centre there. still have more other than that.

we did not get fengshui master in, mainly because i already have ideas for my home..but i personally do believe in avoiding some taboo like no mirror or window facing bed, position of study table, no mirrors or photos facing corridor..however, i my front door faces kitchen window and i do know that it's not particularly good and i did not want to build a partition to block the airflow and light..we added a crystal light at the entrance and plant near the window to 'rectify' it instead.. :P

  8. Hi ItsyBitsy,

Your house looks looks fantastic! I like it!

As for the carpentry workmanship, treat it as a lesson lor. Bo bian.

You come read my blog, lagi jiat lat x 10. Reno 1 year.

But on the positive side, i managed to resolve ALL issues & i learnt alot on my own! DIY with my hands!

As for your solid surface counter top, if u wanna change very tough cos its glued to your suspended cabinet. Unless u wan to redo all which is 浪费钱。

    Alot of DISHONEST/IRRESPOSNSIBLE/UNETHICAL/RUDE contractors & so-called "ID"s out there.

What to do. No governing body.

    Post more lovely pics!

Thanks..many dishonest and unreasonable people around indeed.. =(

  9. Itsy.... After reading ur t-blog from page 1 till now, i feel simply breathless; in good and bad ways....

Good coz ur house is simply breath-takingly beautiful... U really have great vision to put such a theme together. I like! Im the one without clear vision.. Wahaha...

Thanks for sharing good lobangs regarding star living, kwerkee.com n such...

Bad coz my blood has been boiling up n down regarding ur carpentry woes and relative fiasco.... Angry indeed. And to know they change company's name again... Care to share the previous name, current name and owner's name? I havent start on any reno works yet so i want to avoid possible heart pain and anguish in case i engage them.

All in all, hope everything will be well for u n hubby from now onwards... Must now take good care, having some pampering treatments, be ur radiant best for ur pre-wedding shoots and upcoming wedding. Congrats!!

hey thanks! glad my nightmare is over..

Harlow! Heart your lovely new nest!! <3

I hv read evey page & indeed it is a rollercoaster ride for both of you. All the best for your wedding preparations!

Lastly, hope to hv K & your carpentary contacts. Can you pm me pls? Thanks! :D

    thanks! pm-ed K's contacts.

  10. Can help me on the former request? thanks.

Sorry been really busy and the contractors seem to have taken my measuring tapes away..managed to get the paper ones from ikea this weekend, so the measurements are approximate..

    Dish rack 90x60cm

    Backsplash height 60cm

    Length of kitchen 2.4m

    Top cabinet to ceiling 115cm

  11. I wanted to get some items similar style at room of woods but really v broke too.

Oic, seems like many things can't put facing doorway.

that is only if you pan tang..if you feel comfortable with it, it's up to u de..i try to avoid if possible.. :P

i heard room of woods is slightly cheaper.. :D

  12. really love your kitchen mosaic and perfectly flushed kitchen carpentry, which makes me fume about my own carpentry all over again..if only we had let Mr K do everything! :furious:

  13. hi theitsybits, your place is looking really nice with all the furniture, I must say you (and your hubby) have nice taste! :good:

Thank you for sharing your renovation progress..have learned quite a bit from you

    Congrats on your moving in!

thank you for your kind words..hope you are enjoying your renovation and new home too.. =)

  14. Looks like you decided on the Lorgans one! Good choice :) my furniture should be in in 2 wks time. Can't wait!

Yes I did..wanted to only get console cuz in love the legs and curves..but husband say get them together.. =p

Mine shd be here abt same time too! =D

  15. Nice feature wall. So sweet.

Btw, its bad fengshui to put pic facing corridors? If its not portrait ok?

Very nice furnishing fr lorgan too, esp like the papa armchair.

Yea i read that it's bad fengshui to put photos and mirror facing corridors usually (there are exceptions)..so I avoid lo..not very sure about non-portraits photos..but it's good I have a clock (with hands) facing corridor..it will turn and push the good energy into the rooms from livin room..=p

I love the papa chair..love at first sight..wanting to delay getting it de (very broke) but husband got it together.. =D

  16. Wow! Ur papa chair is very nice! I want! But too bad over my budget. Was the bomb shelter door up when i visited ur place? Dont rem seeing it. Maybe i can copy ur idea? Heehee...

Haha think it was only painted and magnets were not added when u were here..painting the bomb shelter with blackboard paint is common these days!

  17. Week 18

I've started moving thing over bit by bit and making the home a livable, warm home to come back to.

This is the feature wall in the middle of the living room. No photos for this feature wall as it faces the corridor and it's bad according to fengshui. The husband just rearranged in with the present from friends during ROM and some DIY deco for ROM. Gonna reuse them for pre-wed shoot and wedding!

    8039342048_98e8e5733a_z.jpg

And this is my blackboard magnet bomb-shelter door with my ugly handwriting. Around the world in 80 years with the husband. :P

    8039421437_b0096447c3_z.jpg

We also took the plunge and bought the smile table, papa chair and a console from Lorgans. The papa chair will only make it here in December while the other 2 should arrive mid-October. Our TV is currently on the floor.

    8043598327_b5125a04c6_z.jpg

I fell in love with this TV console. I love the slanted legs and sexy lines. It's different from the normal retro consoles, at least to me..they even have similar shade of flooring as us..we'll be getting this in oak, a lighter shade that matches my dining table and sideboard.

    8043598103_767b2845f7_z.jpg

And we're getting this smile coffee table because the husband likes it. it's sexy too, we are also getting this in a lighter shade, with oak wood instead of teak.

    8043598683_e62a0776a8_z.jpg

And my beloved papa lounge chair in a similar fabric..did not choose turquoise as they did not have the exact shade nor fabric that I liked..some people call this scandinavian green and i first fell in love with the papa chair that was this color..

All pictures are from Logan's Facebook page.

Building up a home does not end after renovation. In fact, it starts after renovation. Thinking back of the initial conceptualizing and choosing ID and materials, it feels so long ago.

We still have not gotten the bed frame and side tables!! :dunno:
