  1. hello mrmerry, do u mind sharing with me the price of ur LED downlights if possible? just wanna do a comparision of the costs by the same supplier... thanks alot!

    Hihi,

mrmerry, same as sleepbeauty, i'm also keen to know the price of LED downlights..

just started doing some research on lightings for the house...

    thanks in advance =)

    updates by mrs merry:

Sorry for the late reply! the prices are negotiated by our ID. So I think it's not nice to reveal the actual pricing. In total, we spend about $3.5k on lights for the whole house.

The guys from HiiGa were here again. So peiseh, made them come to our place for numerous times. We didn't like the original light switch design; so had an alternative switch BUT that sets the lights to flicker when in low light frequency. Ugh!!!! Thus today, the friendly guys came to change our 2 x 4 gang lights switch to the compatible version. This is is what we call service! :D

Our house pictures are now featured in their Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/HiiGaPteLtd. I look at the pictures want to laugh! Cos our house is still so bare without accessories or any plants.

  2. Hi mrsmerry,

The vanity area from our first reno lasted us a good 7-8 yrs(& it was still ok before hacking), considering it was from a crappy ID firm. So I think yours shouldn't be a problem.

Anyway we highlighted this issue to mr k and his carpenter when the vanity top was done up(though not as low), and they said the laminates are splash proof. As long as they're not soaked in water (which I think no one in the right mind would ), it''s ok.

    So don't worry too much.

    hello macuser77!

Thanks for setting my worries in the right place! Haha.

I hope everything is going well for your new place! :D

Reno regrets or rather considerations for reno newbies:

    1) the intense swarm of renovation sounds going around the neighbourhood is driving Mr Merry mad. So, never be amongst the first few to cheong finish renovation as you will be "enjoying" the symphony of renovation like we do.

    2) The sink tap design. This looks beautiful but your dripping wet hands will soon cause a puddle accumulating around the tap. Consider something that the tap sits within the sink and where puddles will not accumulate on the table top.

    3) Vanity table

Something that we had not foresee. We chose a wide sink where you could wash your face happily without splashing much water on the sides. We grew up with a tiny basin and dreaded it. However we totally missed this part where the drainage hole happened to right above the vanity table.

So cleaning toilette is an issue now. We cannot reach the below to wash it throughly and at the same time worry that the wood will rot with the amount of water splashing around as we tried to wash the area. Suggest to not to build the cabinet so low.

Overall, we are quite pleased with all the reno works and purchases. We shall wait for Time to tell if all these purchases and reno works will fall apart sooner than expected. :D

  4. updates by mrs merry:

It's 2 months in the new house! Mr Merry snapped the first photo showing his mopping evidence; whilst on his Teacher's Day off day last Friday.

We already paid up everything. Despite that, Andy still promptly send down his painter do some touch-up work; one of the new wall has a crack line (the side of the washer/dryer) and the painter got it fixed within a week of notice. Both Andy and painter said that's very common for newly erected walls.

Till now, we still highly recommend Andy's service. I missed the hustle and buzz during the renovation period.

Our house remain bare. The speed of how dust accumulated is like a child sucking lolly. Fast and messy.

House warming parties shall be starting soon as we get more settled in.

For those still renovating, good luck! :D

By the way you sure you want the ps4? Saw it on the web and it's HUGE (reminded my of the VCR). Thought may as well wait for the slim version

  6. Hi mrmerry.

Sad to say full pics can only be up when the fridge and other misc things arrive.

By the way are you glad you didn't get the sound bar? For me the urge of getting 1 fades over time as I realised I can live without it. The sound from your sony should be decent enough :)

  7. Hi House owners and fellow friend, Saw that you have bought flooring from Evorich... Be careful... Ask about termite resistant and termite proof... Better make them put it in the sales contract before your final payment!!!!!

Please be careful when you recommend laminated floor suppliers. Watch the you tube video and you knows what I means! !!

Supplier : Evorich Holding Pte Ltd

Brand : Tarkett -- Supposedly made in Germany

Warranty by Evorich Holding :- Lifetime warranty on material and workmanship -

    Actual : NOTHING DONE! !!

Wa this is so scary! lucky my vinyl is rubber n nobody likes the taste of rubber :D

  8. hi JSimmy

i think its abit useless la cause i know he plus n minus for various things to ensure his own fee. so its very unfair to breakdown and compare items by item. We are after all not talking about items but a overall service he rendered for us. =) sorry bro.

OOps. i just realised i think u meant the hood n stuff, ill ask mrs merry to revert to u k she's the penny master. :P

  9. HiHi, nice nice. can let me know your renovation cost pls?

Eh, we spent about 58K for the whole reno. 15K for furnitures and appliances. 3K for lights. 3K for all the sinks, taps, toliet bowls and blah.

Much costs are sunk into better material selection and re-doing the toilets, service yard. Mr Merry wants a a consistent look for the entire home. Not even a tiny space like service yard can be spared too. I was trying to convince him to spend less but not fruitful.

Of course a pretty home comes with a heavy price. We're broke now! Now I'm thinking how to delay Andy's payment to later months. *ahem*

    - mrs merry

  10. Able to share your costing on the kitchen cabinet and Hanstone top pfr..Tx

Erm, i cannot recall on the actual costs. our kitchen had 2 x backsplash ( one particular piece is from ceiling to table top) , 2 x table top, 1 x island top - all HanStone Quartz for about 7kish i think.

Kitchen costs - I can't recall. 15k? I made alteration to all the bottom shelves to be heavy duty track drawers.

  11. Hi MrMerry, I read on your thread that you are using Hiiga's AEON LED lights.

Can I ask how's the LED quality? Any problems after the installation? We are considering Hiigaa AEON LED as well.

Btw what is FSM stands for?

    Thank you!

    Hi kingfisher07

We love their lights! Awesome!! Our whole house is lit by their quality products - even bathroom, service yard and bomb shelter. Haha!

The Merries are serious book readers - so if we can read comfortably long hours under this lightning. The verdict is clear. :P

Seriously, this money spent (compared to those much much much cheaper version) is worth every cents. Maybe we are very sensitive to light temperature and colour - it fits us functionally and it makes our home look gorgeous at night too. haha.

We realised, pretty homes need decent quality light sources. It REALLY set the home in a whole new dimension. :D

    FSM means FENG SHUI MASTER.

  12. Hi Merries,

Very nice home! I love the neutral backdrop for decorating and putting your personal touch. I would like to know if the electrical box next to the main door / kitchen is full height as it looks in the photos. How does the inside look? Still have 3 more years to getting our keys so am curious if the box can be shifted and pillar knocked down.

    Thanks!

    Hi Razzberries,

Yes, its full height. It cant be knocked down for our house layout. It's 100% original with all the electrical box and points for WIFI and blah. HDB also laid the gas piping outlet at that pillar too.

The only thing we did to ensure a seamless look was to apply to a layer of sealant to the original door and paint over with our wall paints.

  13. Mrs Merry! Thanks so much for the reply, really appreciate it and I am heartened to know that good contractor do exist! I had been dealing with someone who has been shortchanging me by providing as little renovation work as possible while making sure that the bill total up to around our budget. Maybe I will give Andy a call soon and find out more from him since my reno work will only start in September. Just one point I am wondering, is there many items left out from the original quotation? Does he add on many "unforeseen" items once the renovation starts?

    Hello IsetanteO,

There is no unforeseen items once the renovation starts. The only changes that we had were genuine unforeseen minor alterations and he will inform you the costs upright and if you like to change. I must stress that YOU (homeowner) need to be very meticulous with every single details at quotation and layout/technical drawing stage. This save the whole hassle of any other last min decisions on-site or miscommunications. Many at times, unhappy incidents happened as owners change their mind upon seeing the actual site reno as they can't visualised the real environment prior to that. Home owners need to play their role too. For Andy, he knew our preferences and expected quality to be delivered after numerous meetings together on drawing boards stage.

We have blown an additional 7K as we changed certain things along the way - 1 example is changing kitchen glass backsplash to quartz backsplash was a huge cost difference. But that was clearly our decision and costs was made known to us. His quotation is very itemised and all inclusive. So those things that wasn't executed will not be billed to you. I hope that clarifies. :D - Mrs Merry

  14. Howwas your review of your ID contractor? Is the quality of their work good?

    Hello!

Andy Quek has met all requirements and our renovation had been smoother than we had expected.

Or rather we had benefited from a 20-day planning discussion with him over 2 weekends; each lasting average 8 hours each Sat discussing over elevation plans and floor layout. Thus when the renovation actually kicks off we do not deviate from what we had discussed and agreed. As granular details had been thought off - from usage perspective, functional and aesthetics design perspective, material perspective and costs perspective. We had this 20-days as we were waiting for the auspicious FSM timing to kick off. This 20 days had allowed us to back off from over enthusiasm and forced us into planning the drawing board. And I will strongly urge any new home owners to do this process throughly.

In addition, we are very clear with what we want in mind - our functional needs and aesthetics needs. I'm the only person that liaison with Andy directly throughout the 2-mths process. We communicated heavily on WhatsApp and via Phone. We exchanged ideas and feedback very frequently that I always ponder how he managed it as thou I'm the sole client he serviced. Haha.

We like his service and will highly recommend his services. We have very hectic work schedules and he basically settled everything from aircon trunking, gas piping and all without us around (so we never took leave during this 5-weeks reno period). We visited the house only once a week to check on progress and provided feedback to him. Issues were rectify quickly and promptly. He has an even nimble mind than me; I'm very impressed. So I rely heavily on him to get things executed based on our discussed issues.

Quality wise, we think is good. thou note that we're not fussy people. Our tolerance level might differ from other people. Most importantly, our home had turned out to be a beautiful one. It's hard to guess if it's a HDB from the pics. So far, no issues. Any minor issue, Andy will always be around to service us and promptly gotten it rectify.

And he is a good eye candy to work with. :notti:
