  1. Tomorrow we are meeting our very first contractor. Hope this will distract us from the agony of waiting for our 1st appointment.

Since we know what we want, we will be putting our ideas on paper and bring them along tomorrow. Guess this should give the contractor a better idea of what we aim to achieve.

We will have to share our likes & dislikes I suppose eg no wall/ desk/ floor fans, no bifold or PD doors, no safe color scheme, no white color sanitary ware, no top kitchen cabinets etc. And that we will supply our own sanitary ware, faucets, wall tiles, craft bricks, ceiling fans, lights, switches, hood & hob, aircon - well I guess that is quite normal?

Just pray that the contractor will not see us as fussy folks (cross fingers)!

Renovation so much money... of course must be fussy la... No worries about being fussy (we all are!). This looks like a pretty good start! :)

  2. You must be eagerly waiting for the renovation to start :) waiting can be so painful right?

My kitchen and bathrooms hacking will start on 5th Feb (on Tues)! hee, unofficially starting soon. They'll hack for three days then continue end of Feb.

Yes!!! Painful indeed. Looking forward to see the home coming together

  3. Thought of getting a Kraus sink via Amazon.com, after being tempted by some of the forumers here... but decided not to, due to budget constraints. Hoping to get something similar though!

Will need to get taps and other fittings too, time to start shopping at Taobao! :yamseng:

  4. 1. I think white handles would go better!

    2. b, paint the skirting white... I can visualise quite well because we'll have similar flooring right? :notti: But I dunno about maintenance... I'm hacking my wood skirting to replace with another colour that matches my flooring

2.5 I'm the more traditional sort, prefer to be 'orbiang' lol

    3. none of the above, get roller blinds!!! (biased, because that's what I'm getting lol)

  5. Was agonising over heaters last night, because I prefer using instant heater (lesser pipes) but I really want a rain shower... I don't like storage tanks because they take quite awhile to heat up which is a pain because I wake up late every morning - no time to wait for hot water! Then there's citygas heaters but I don't like to see so many pipes running up the wall... :bleah: I'm very 'ti-ki', I know. haha

And after some intensive googling, I found a great solution!

Alpha Smart 18 instant heater that comes with a rainshower set. :dribble: Realised my spa place uses this heater too, so I know it's good, lol! Have been using them all the while but didn't look at the brand. Note to self to get this when buying toilet stuff this weekend! :)

  6. My parents-in-law are sponsoring a refrigerator as our house-warming gift! :)

Our laminates' sales guy from Wood Culture brought us to one of his customer's WIP project last week to have a look, because that particular customer picked the same colour/range of laminate as ours!

    Looks good! I like! :dribble:

  7. I got about 5 or 6, but in the end only met 2. :) The other quotations were ridden with hidden costs and whatnot, or the IDs didn't sound sincere enough on the phone to do our business - probably because of our budget. During this time, maybe you can pop by some ID firms and go through your floor plan with whoever's there for ideas and to get a glimpse of how much your works will cost. You can give a call to the contractor contacts I PMed you to see when they can meet you after CNY (sub-cons/workers only begin work end of Feb anyways, the main cons have nothing much in between).

We have yet to meet any contractors yet as our first appointment is only after CNY. At the same time, we thought this will be a bad time for us to pester any contractor, guess they will be busy with CNY handover?

Anyways, we think we will only look for contractors since we know very well what we want, from the color schemes in each room to the locations of the lights and switches. I think we will drive the ID (if any) nuts as we can be quite anal about stuff hahaha.

One ID has contacted us, asking if we need a quote. Still thinking if we should... Basically we have decided around 4 contractors to contact. Should we proceed to get more than 4 quotes? Am worried we get confused and then later, 头大!

  8. Taps, mixers all arrived from Taobao. Chose China local brand Joomo after consulting several friends who have been working in China for some time. Joomo is a reputable local China brand and they are also making for some top European brands.

Total damage less than $300 including freight. Cheap cheap but quality good good!

    2pcs shower mixers

    2pcs basin mixer taps

    1pc kitchen mixer

    2pcs basin water trap

WOAH so cheap!!! Do you still have the Taobao link to share? :P

  9. Okay, finally signed the dotted line with Inspire by D'trenzo. Picking out tiles and stuff this Sunday, and they'll rush out my 3D drawings before CNY!

Deciding factor: Feel quite comfortable with the ID, lots of two-way communication which I enjoy and appreciate, reviews are not bad, price is reasonable - not my cheapest quote but detailed enough... in fact we went /slightly/ over budget (worth it!). Amounts up to approximately 30k including electrical works.

    :dancingqueen:

    And the fun part begins!

  10. Did the ID explain why there will be a gap on solid surface top which encourages water seepage? Cos i plan to use concrete base for the above reason mentioned. Thanks.

Nope... I never ask in detail. I asked another friend who said "you like lor, murphy's law... whatever will spoil, will still spoil." :dunno: I could ask again.

  11. Met Russell from Inspire by D'trenzo! We couldn't make time to go to his office/showroom at Balestier so he came all the way to my hubby's house. :dancingqueen:

We only meet IDs/contractors after getting at least indicative quotations to get an idea of how much they charge and how detailed their quotation is (those which have obvious hidden costs, I just skip!), and Russell was only the 2nd ID we met.

I like the fact that he's very detailed and transparent about potential costs when going through the quotation. Gave pretty good suggestions when it comes to space planning too. His quote is reasonable, and we decided to top up additional carpentry items... quotation went up to about 25k to 27k. Still manageable I guess, just that we need to eat grass for awhile. 90% sure that we're going to confirm with him! Hope we can confirm his services by end of this week, looking through his final quote now.

    EXCITED!!! :yamseng:

My current dilemma is whether to construct a concrete slab below the sink for support/if got water seepage won't spoil the cabinet, which was recommended by Mr Yeak but discouraged by Russell because there'll be a gap on the solid surface top which encourages water seepage and ants.

    :jawdrop:

  12. I was about to confirm Berry too but hold back cause saw the HERF and the price is about there and HERF do feel like wood too so I go ahead with HERF. This is what I opted for:

Yeah... Now too late for regrets too, already paid $1.8k for down payment.

  13. Met Mr Yeak from Basic Image & Design at his office yesterday and we discussed on more detailed requirements... Quotation costs went up and we're a little worried about the budget. :( Sigh! He's really nice though, and his work (from his showcase) looked pretty good. We'll see.

Next, we're going to meet Russell from Inspire by D'trenzo. So far we have only liaised by phone but I liked his service... He's very detailed and gave me points of consideration which I have never thought about before. Not bad. His indicative quotation looks quite reasonable too.

Currently awaiting a quotation from another ID, recommended by our flooring supplier Wood Culture.
