  1. Oh ya I forgot to put the price for the sofa set. All for S$300. Super cheap, because I just check in a rattan shop, a three seater sofa is usually S$900.

This one S$300 for not only 3 seater sofas, but also with 2 more armchairs, 2 side tables and 1 coffee table.

Whoever buy the sofa set can take the shell painting for free.

The lighting is free for everyone who are interested.

    All self collect.

  2. Hi,

the previous owner of my old flat left a set of vintage rattan sofa.

It is no longer made in this style now, and the rattan is quite big and sturdy.

Initially we want to keep them, but since we need more space for our growing family, we need to let them go.

Hopefully they can meet another vintage lover who can appreciate its history and style.

These are not in perfect condition (it is around 20-30 years old), but still very strong.

The rattan are already re-stained, but the cushions are original (with a set of spare slip cover).

Total there are one three seater sofa, 2 armchairs, 2 side table, and 1 coffee table

  3. Hi wabisabi, does the polishing help to remove stain and uneven color on terrazzo flooring?

Hi, sorry, been busy with a lot of things, rarely check my t-blog.

Yes, polishing does remove a lot of uneven color, big big different from before to after polishing.

Before, it look more black than white..... (my terrazo is white with black speckles). But the polishing can't reach until tiny corner or the rounded part of skirting. So these part are still a bit yellowish, but not so obvious. Also big different in shine, after polishing, really shiny.

  4. Hi guys

If the parquet floor has been around for a long time, there is a chance it has already been re-sand a few times. In that case, be very careful if you intend to re-sand. Expressly tell the contractor to be very careful. If need to, do one small area first. Check, check, check.

There is a limit to the number of times you can re-sand. In my previous place, the contractor got carried away and the floor was sanded till damaged. In some places where the wood overlap and join, it was very thin or hollow. Some places, a hole formed. Had to use wood putty to fill up. All very ugly and unacceptable.

If I knew, I would have just lightly sanded or maybe don't bother. Better to have nice rough wood than smooth terrible wood.

That is very true! Fortunately auntie didn't sand the parquet often, so it is still quite thick.

I guess we are lucky. I am sorry it didn't work well on your parquet.

  5. Hi Wabisabi, I like your contractor! We also were thinking of keeping our terrazo flooring but a few contractors and IDs we spoke to would rather hack it off. Do you mind pm-ing me your contractor's contact?

Yeah... that's the typical advice from an average contractor... they also want to get bigger profit by changing the flooring.

I have pm-ed you the contact. If you want a designer to help, you can also consider Eugene Yip design or Butterpaper studio. I have contacted both of them. They are unique, stand apart and I am sure they will not ask you to hack the terrazzo floor (unless it is in bad condition). I didn't use them simply because I want to try designing my own flat without an ID (it was not an easy decision, and sometime I regret it).You can check out their website.

  6. If auntie bought the flat when she was 25 years old, she must be at least 85 to 90 years old now?

Yup, she looks like about 80 plus. It is hard for her to climb stairs, but she looks healthy and strong... Auntie said she doesn't have enough strength to clean the flat anymore, and she had been waiting for lift upgrading which never come, that's why she sold the flat.

  7. Just to ask, what do you intend to do with the vintage sofa? If you want to upholster the sofa or rather change the cushions and cover, I know of just a place that does tailoring, and even making rattan furniture. Price wise, i am not sure now as it has been many years now but location is in JB. If the location have not changed, it will be near the customs.

I got a cheaper quotation from rattan shop at Alexandra, restoration and re staining is $480 include delivery.

  8. Really 60 years? If so, those of us who use the real wood floors for a long time can still say we are more eco-friendly than those who use laminated wood but change every few years.

This morning I just met Auntie, the first owner of the flat. She said she got the parquet very long time ago, when she just got the flat. So it is really about 60-65 years old.

My contractor also said that if we don't want to keep the parquet, he will take it for himself, because it is good parquet.

  9. Really 60 years? If so, those of us who use the real wood floors for a long time can still say we are more eco-friendly than those who use laminated wood but change every few years.

That is the age of the floor that I heard. I will ask auntie when I meet her to pass her letters.

But I believe solid wood is quite environmental friendly, especially compare to new flooring material which contains plastics or resin that is not biodegradable. A greener option will be reclaimed timber.

I guess as owner we have to find the suitable contractor who are not just looking for profit. This kind of contractors are not easy to find. I have contacted about 9 contractors/ID and 6 of them actually suggested I replaced the parquet with tiles. One came down to site and said that it is hollow and need to change all.

Two contractors actually suggested to replace the whole floor including the terrazzo floor. They said it is easier to do, match better with the design and doesn't cost "that much".

The contractor that we finally chose has done a few conservation flat, so they are familiar with vintage&heritage stuff. They are also used to handle "quirky" request from vintage lover, such as keeping the old brick, find old peranakan glass etc. He said that the parquet floor are in good condition. It is made from old teak wood. The newer parquet that the supplier sell nowadays are from younger tree, so not as solid as this old parquet.

  10. Since our laundry room is tiny, so we can only install this :

Initially we want to have the laundry hanger system that can be pull out through the window. But the window is too low and the room is too small.

So we can only have the indoor hanger. The other option is the bamboo poles....

Haih.... :( the laundry room is the one place that looks messy. The water heater is jotting out because it can't fit on the wall between pipes.... :(
