  1. Here's a post on about one of our favourite parts of our home design... our kitchen entrance! This part of the design was quoted and re-quoted until we were satisfied with the balance of aesthetics, practicality and costs. Our semi-open concept kitchen is created by a low wall lined with subway tiles on each side and an aluminum lattice of windows that spans across the entrance. The black and white colours and patterns match the interior of the kitchen – the industrial café look. Our pair of retro pendant lamps illuminate the entrance like a shopfront and adds to the ambiance of the living room, kitchen and our bedroom. We are just days away from the completion of our renovation and can soon move on with shifting in furniture and delivering the appliances –– excited! [Read more on our blog post]
  2. Yet another checklist of work done over the last few days: [√] Main door – wanted a condo feel with a long vertical handle [√] Door frame varnished – two shades darker than the door [√] Iron gate – simple white horizontal bars [√] Window grilles – aligned to our louvered windows to minimize view obstruction [read more on our blog post]
  3. Thanks! We actually searched through but we have to work within size and installation constraints and only a few were suitable. Might get it from there if we can't find any that we like in Singapore.
  4. We are finishing up the carpentry and electrical works this week. Last week, while in the middle of carpentry work, our first oven arrived and was installed. It’s a Bosch HBN331E2J built-in oven bought from Harvey Norman some time back. Just a low end model for us to play around, hopefully easy enough to learn a bit of baking and grilling. 5. Actually, it's still there. In this picture there's one vertical grout line going right through the middle. The picture long tile ago had no grout, so it was obvious then. Our tiler mixed the grout to match the colour of the tiles to achieve a more seamless look, but it's still visible if you see it in real life.
  6. And... here's out water heater – 707 Princeton instant heater. In black to match our industrial pipes. [read more on our blog post]
  7. That's great! It's a decision you won't regret. Here are our extra large double pocket doors for our study room! Totally digging the raw look... We are now looking for some vintage looking handles for the doors... does anyone have any idea where to get them in Singapore? [read more on our blog post]
  8. For old 3-NG units, there's a drop of 10cm from the living room the the kitchen, probably to prevent water from overflowing to the living room when doing massive kitchen washing. However, we wanted the kitchen and living to have a level flooring, so we had to "top-up" the floor by 10cm. Previously, the use of foam was allowed, but there was a recent rule change starting that those foam can't be used anymore due to fire safety concerns, so contractors all have to source for alternative fire-resistant material to fill the hole.
  9. Thanks~! The renovation is finally moving on to carpentry. We're going for a raw look for our interior doors... selected Lamitak's Corona Maple. Hoping that it all goes well with our wood-tile flooring in the rooms. Selected Laminate Wood tiles flooring [read more on our blog post]
  10. Lights on! Our electrician connected up half our lights... here's how they look with switched on. All purchased from TaoBao + lightings.com.sg (Jln Besar) + Hock Eng Hin (Tiong Bahru). [read more on our blog]
  11. Just a quick pic. Our Relite Petite ceiling fan and our newly installed LED track lights – suspended to avoid the strobe effect. [read more on our blog]
  12. Probably not till the level of specific pieces. Might not be that useful, since quality is quite subjective and the defects were mainly due to transportation. And because we already got them at a much cheaper price compared to the shops here, we aren't too concern with their quality, as long as they work.
  13. Nope, we used 65daigou. Here are the links for those pictured: Pendant LampTable LampFloor Lamp
  14. Haha... which of his alien shows? thought it looks more like those from war of the worlds.
  15. Thanks! As our electrician install the lights, we thought we'll share some of our purchases. Half our lights were bought on Tao Bao – delivered in 10 packages. Of them, one item was entirely wrong and two had minor nicks and shipping defects. Two was average in quality and make, while the other five were of good quality and were better than expected. We have since returned the erroneous and defective items and waiting for reshipment. Overall, it was quite a satisfying experience shopping online as opposed to walking up and down Balestier and Jalan Besar. Here's a sneak preview of a few of them. [read more on our blog post]
  16. Our first lights are up! Here's a retro industrial pendant that will feature right in the middle of the home. Seems like a must-have light for those going for a retro/industrial look these days.
  17. Have been running pipes and cables through the unit all week. [ √ ] Water Supply [ √ ] City Gas [ √ ] OpenNet [ √ ] Electrical Moving on to lights and other fixtures soon, then on to the last leg of our renovation phase. Good thing we are reusing most of our furniture from our current place. Excited that we are shifting in soon!
  18. Hi, we're not sure about the cost of each switch and their difference with the plastic ones. We are assuming they will be slightly more expensive. If we get a chance to ask our electrician, we'll PM you. Thanks!
  19. It's been a while since we last posted. Our painting, plumbing, air-con and gas works have been done. and we are now in the middle of electrical works. Our electrical plan may be a bit complex, but we managed to explain it to our electricians and learned a lot in the process. They have allocated the necessary wires for the lighting points and the wires are now dangling all over the place. They also started to mount the plugs and switches on the walls. We are going with a mix of PVC trunking and industrial pipes to route our wires. We also have selected industrial plugs and switches to enhance the look. There are some constraints with using pipes, so we had to adapt and adjust our plan according to balance between aesthetics and practicality. Hopefully, the wiring will be done soon and we can move on to more exciting stuff like lighting and carpentry. [read more on our blog post]
  20. Before and after: applying white grout for our subway tiles. Before: After: [see more on our blog post]
  21. We started working on our subway tile kitchen backsplash today. Love it that it is both functional and aesthetically pleasant. We are working towards an industrial café look for the kitchen – hopefully it will all come together nicely in the end. [read more on our blog]]
  22. Yes! After 1.5 months, we finally got full HDB approval for all outstanding works. It was a mad rush of activity today and explaining our plan to many people... tiler, plumber, electrician, air-con technicians, carpenters and metalworks guys. An amazing buzz of activity for the entire day with various groups coordinating on how they will do up the intersecting areas. Its finally feeling like things are moving along again!
  23. Thanks. We are loving the look! He didn't specifically mention about any any extra costs.
