  1. I didn't mention it coz I think it's not relevant to the topic. But since you asked, the aircon I bought is a Toshiba. So far all good. The service technician was from Carrier. Probably they contract their repair and tech support to Carrier.
  2. I've had some bad experience with ALLBEST, details in here: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=14116 I hope it's just my bad luck. Haven't tried other services so wouldn't know if others do better.
  3. Hi all, just wanna share this info with you, if you didn't already know it. After you installed your new aircon, those system3/4 type, remember to test each window unit seperately. Here is what happens to my system3 installed late last year. I tested all three window units (in 3 rooms) together for half hour and every room is cooled, also the window unit seems functioning properly. Later since for the first a few months it's just me and my wife living in the new flat, we only use the unit in MB. Until recently my parents-in-law came to help take care of our new born babe. Then we found the aircon in common room not blow cool air, just normal air. So I called up manufacturer, and their technician came. After some test he told me that the control circuit of the two common rooms are mixed. So when I tried to operate aircon in one common room, the cold gas went to the other room. And because the other room's window unit is not open, the cold gas frozen and made ice around the copper tube. He said the ice hasn't damaged the unit or the pipe but I'm not sure, can only hope for the best. I cant believe the installer from A**BEST could make such stupid mistake. And I am also not careful to test each room seperately. Other bad experience with this A**BEST: When I called them about the faulty aircon on friday, they said they'll ask manufacturer's technician to contact me next monday. But after a whole week there's no1 calling. when I called them again, they asked me to call the manufacturer's support center myself. So I called and was told nobody reported my case. Fortunately the manufacturer's support is fast the technician came the 3rd day and solved the problem. The A**BEST installation guy was very dishonest and poor mannered. When he came to install the aircon, he didn't cover the floor and all the dust/debris from drilling holes on the wall spreaded on our parquet floor. He also try to use thinner water pipe other than what the salesman at their office specially advertised that they'll use the thicker ones to guarrantee no blocking. Fortunately I found out and called up his office immediately then he had to change to the correct ones. Also when I purchace the aircon from A**BEST, they said there'll be a free electrical water pot as gift. At the day of installation, the installer did bring one, but it's damaged! So I asked him to change a new one for me, and called up the salesman (name is Roy sth) who confirmed will send a new one. But you may guessed it, never heard of it again. All in all, A**BEST gives me very bad experience and I suggest everybody try avoid buying air-con from them.
  4. Hi guys, my contractor told me to relocate a SCV port cost 150-180, and that's just for the relocating and change of casing, because the existing wire is long enough to reach the new position. do you think that's too exp? I would rather do it myself if that needs that much. also my contractor quoted me to replace all the switch/power-port casing in the flat for S$500, do you think that's fair? or maybe I can just buy new casing and install myself too? is it difficult to do or require some sort of license to touch electricity-related stuff? Thanks.
  5. Hi guys, I'm not sure if this is sth I should be worried or I'm just too fussy: We want to dismantle the existing kitchen cabinets and re-arrange the layout of kitchen to make room for a small dining area. The contractor told us he is afraid that the existing kitchen cabinets don't have wall tiles behind it. This is because the buil-in furniture in the bedroom don't have parquets underneath it (the previous owner must worked on a tight budget back then). So I called the previous owner to ask about the kitchen wall tile, and was told that the kitchen cabinet is from the first owner (he was the second and we're the third!) so he don't know. this is believeble as the kitchen cabinets are obviously much older than other furnitures in the flat. So I told my contractor we'll have to find out ourselves, and I'll come to the flat the day they dismantle all the kitchen cabinets. Then the contractor obviously doesn't want my presense on that day and told me I can see it after they finish the job, no need to take annual leave on such things blah blah. That's where I get suspecious. So, do you think any contractor will actually destroy sth that you cant see normally and then charge you extra to 'repair' it? in my case do you think he will take out the wall tiles and told me it's not there from the beginning? I think if the wall tile is hacked away it should be quite obvious right? I hope I'm just too careful on this... also do you guys think it necessary to be on the site of renovation to monitor nothing is damaged by the workers that shouldn't?
  6. Hi all, I've talked to a couple of contractors for renovation of our newly purchased flat (resale HDB). I notice that they all include aircon in their quotations, normally 3k+ for system 3 or system4. I'm wondering if it'll be cheaper to buy aircon by ourselves and let them install only. and how big is it a problem to install aircon after renovation done? I assume all those pipes can be hidden better when done during renovation instead of after?
  7. Thanks a lot for the detailed information! Mid-august is the resale completion date not my expected date to finish reno. So I'll be looking around in those places you mentioned for some survey and quotes, and hope I can start the renovation as soon as obtaining the keys.
  8. Dear all, I'm about to start renovating my first HDB flat. Completion date is mid-august so I'd like to start looking for reno contractors/IDs. I'm new to this thing so can you guys give me some address of the reno firms' show rooms so I can go down to have a look and get some idea to start with. I hope there is some place that holds many such firms together like you go to SLS to buy computer related stuff. Anybody can help? Also need info on where to find many furniture stores. I went to IMM and IKEA, anywhere else worth looking at? Thanks a lot!
