  1. Enter the dungeon! Love the lights and the study desk that spans the room. Just has an old workshop kinda feel. At least until I pile the table full of my junk. This is a slot that my ID suggested I add. It will house an extension cord neatly so that all my computer cables can neatly go to one spot. I think its a great idea! Absolutely adore this wire mesh cupboard on the side of the table! Oh and this wasn't pictured but something for you to think about if you intend to do a long study table like me. It's heavy. And the center has a high chance of sagging over time. (it was actually my dad that pointed this out and not my ID. Points to experience!) The carpenters agreed and we added 2 triangular supports to the wall to lend the center some strength. So the lesson here, is to actually listen to your parents. (once in a while)
  2. Carpentry is done! And I think that this is the group of contractors that I most trusted. Every time I had an issue there were already aware of it and about to fix it. Granted that they messed up the purchasing of the laminate but I gotta say, I'm happy with the results. The mechanisms are all soft close and work beautifully. The edges all align and everything is done to spec. Happy! We made the corner an L shaped door opening so that we can use the dead space that's right in the corner. Having a traditional door system would have resulted in some very awkward reaching to get the stuff right inside. Hard to describe with words. If you drew it out then you would understand. lol. What I did not forsee however was the door being much heavier and so it sagged slightly when it was first mounted. The smart carpenter has since installed a magnet at the top center to hold it. My tall larder on the left and a couple of small shelves on the right for what we hope will be a tiny herb garden. Low kitchen counters only. We LOVE the raw laminate! The top will be black kompacplus and that will be fitted on tomorrow! Can't wait! Big drawers are all heavy duty to take heavy plates and stuff without damaging the drawer tracks.
  3. Hi yogi! It's a bit hard to estimate the cost for the flooring. I paid about $6.4K for most of my 5 room flat to be covered. Except balcony, service yard and kitchen. But I must say that this is through the ID's contact. I think you can get evorich's herf for slightly cheaper at $7 psf. As for experience, I can only say that it looks FANTASTIC! (pictures will follow shortly) The protection has only just come off and they are doing paint touch ups at the moment so I haven't had the chance to step on it with bare feet. My only issue as mentioned in a previous post is that I opted to go without skirting. I don't regret my choice but due to walls not being straight, the thickness of the silicon used to seal the edges are also varying in thickness. And since the silicon is white, it stands out. I'm painting the silicon the wall colour to hide things a bit. Another blogger commented that some companies have brown silicon (or whatever colour matches your floor) if you decide to go down this path also. Hope this helps!
  4. Unique is what we're all going for I think. No point spending all this time and money to look exactly like your neighbours!
  5. Haha ok ok. Well I just touched the hinges where the lights hang from. That part will be cooler. Or you get your hubby to do it. Men kena burn also have to suck it up for maschismo's sake. I never compare myself to the rest of my neighbours. I just assume that my house is way more beautiful and so I should do whatever works for us. haha. Also, its quite nice to stand out what. Easier to direct friends in the future.
  6. Actually, i think mine was about 1m - 1.2m tall. So might be roughly the same size as what you wanted. I assume this is the kitchen bar counter in your 3D that you're reducing? From that area it won't be as visually heavy but I suggest you get the ID to block out the space at the site itself. Mark out the exact area that it will be in and then picture what it will be like. But then again, your great idea of having it movable probably solves it all. Sigh....
  7. Love the wood planks with the white toilets. And if you can get those bronzed fixtures, it would really complete the look! Glad to see that your reno is coming along. And your guys are actually pulling overtime! Mine come late and go early (cos we had quite a bit of buffer built into the schedule and now it's all getting used up. )
  8. Brought my folks into the house one evening to check out the reno and saw that the bench we ordered for wearing shoes was installed. The bench was also supposed to separate the 'foyer' area from the living area. Unfortunately, it did that last job too well. The bench was HUGE and blocked out the entire view of the hall. Made the house look rather small and claustrophobic. Suddenly the passage way into the hall felt narrow and due to the apartments column being different than the plan, the alignment of the bench to the living room was also wrong. So despite liking the combination of the laminates and the idea of a bench to wear our shoes, we decided to scrap the entire bit of carpentry. And yes, we are still paying for it. There isn't a heart pain emoticon. Or a wallet pain emoticon. That would be used here. Many, many times. Sigh. Our ID was quite sad to lose it cos she liked it but she also saw where i was coming from. Singapore apartments are small enough without us making them feel even tighter. So we will be using our sofa's ottoman to wear our shoes before we leave. If that feels odd, then we will come up with something else after we move in.
  9. This is a better shot of my light grey main door with the new scissor gate installed. Think it kicks some serious ***.
  10. Loving the look of your place and how disciplined you are with the scandi theme. The simple whites and blacks are actually probably what my wife really wants for our house. I've also gotten a tv console off TB but I haven't had the guts to look in yet. Here's hoping that both of ours turn our well!
  11. Not sure if this it how its SUPPOSED to be done, but i think you can remove the tv, attach the new tv wire to the old one via masking tape or something similar, then pull the old wire out the other side. Thereby threading the new wire through the concealed hole. Makes sense?
  12. Haha I insisted on sitting on the toilet bowl like an idiot to test all the positions before he installed it. Felt rather self conscious being on the toilet with a few people watching but what to do? The water that slides backwards is in your shower area right? Won't that get wet everyday? However if its drying fast then that means that the problem isn't that bad to begin with. Main door is actually the same light grey as most of the walls of our house. But yes, I wanted a white door to constrast the black scissor gate at first! But both ID and the mrs shot me down. HA! So thank you for justifying my choice!! (I gotta admit that her choice of the grey was a better idea though) ((also, she reads this blog... ))
  13. Wah kao, lights so high up, why you go and touch touch? Lol. Even LED torches mark themselves as hot so i think thats fairly normal? Just probably a lot more efficient in their transformation of electrical energy to light.
  14. LED spots are coolER than traditional spots. I'm sure they still give off some amount of heat. I haven't sat under mine yet. Will let you know how it goes.
  15. It's actually quite comfortable. And further out would hamper the use of the sink. Might get wet from sink also. The common toilet is the jialat one. Reach all the way back
  16. Aircon fancoils were installed today! Quite happy with the results. Master bedroom: We will see a little bit of trunking here but not much. Study room: No trunking cos its back to back with the master bedroom. Living: My MASSIVE 24000 BTU unit. Cost we $200 more but we needed it since our house is so open. Open kitchen, dining, living, corridor to the rooms and even the WIW has no door. So... hope it's enough! So big that you can see it hang below the beam in the last shot. Well, that's mainly cos of the piping so no choice la. Have to box it up. Consequently, the box up with cover about 3 inches of my steel wall area but its ok. Just a small section. All these little issues that you can't predict or plan for. Sigh. OH! I noticed that the outdoor compressor, WAS NOT BOLTED IN PLACE I quickly called the ID cos i didn't want to be sued for killer litter!! But when the air con guy called me, it seems that its the norm not to bolt it in. He says you can, but every time you do maintenance, they will have to undo the bolt and they will charge you extra cos it's not easy to do. So far he has never had an issue with it and says that most people do it this way. True? Anyway, we are leaving it as it is for now. But I can say that I'm not going to walk under air con compressors anymore.
  17. Ok, here are some pics of my toilets as requested. But pardon the lousy photography. I'm really quite bad at this. Common Toilet: See that masking tape in the second shot between the hand towel hanger and the toilet roll? Thats where they drilled wrongly. So replacing that tile will affect both accessories and they will have to be remounted. Love the stark contrast of the white porcelain with the dark tiles. Master Toilet: Thankful that I have a vanity ledge on which i could mount the toilet roll! And I simply love the bare bulb effect. Will most likely change the bulb to a normal LED bulb so its more energy efficient though. We use the toilet too much for it to be edison. My rain shower! WC, sinks and taps were from Heritage. Price wise extremely competitive. Great service from knowledgeable staff. Didn't have any issues with delivery too. Highly recommended. Shower items for both toilets were from Wasser bath. Products were good although price is somewhat higher than heritage. Service was a bit pushy though and could see she had a black face when we didn't get everything from her. So minus points. Still, service aside, everything else with them was fine.
  18. Opening a hole in the vanity is a good idea, but why not just mount it on the side of the vanity? I only had a vanity-ish ledge in one toilet and thats where I put it. You accepted the water that slides backwards? That would irritate the crap out of me! I personally would have them redo the thing but I'm anal. Haha my wife swears by Mr Muscle too but she says that anything that works that well has to be **** toxic so she wears gloves. Will post pics soon! The difficulty of dark walled toilets is that its not as photogenic, esp on a phone camera which doesn't capture the light as well. (All excuses for my lousy camera skills)
  19. Hmm.. Have a lot but I'm looking for simple text and I suspect the text I'm looking for might be difficult to find. Quite specific about font and size since it's to fit on the limited space of the toilet door and not a wall per say. Most likely will find a shop to custom it and see if they do installation too. Will let you know if the product/ cost is good! Then you can do for your kitchen too. All the shops I found in singapore do letters as well as graphics.
  20. We are planning to use vinyl decals to put a few words on our glass toilet/yard doors. Has anyone done this before? Any companies to recommend? We need design, print and cut, and maybe even installation if the cost is low.
  21. Went to the house over the weekend to mark out rectification areas in the toilet since that area is pretty much done. Wanted to save a bit of time cos the delays have been building up a bit with the lack of laminates and a few other issues. Anyway, after scouring each and every inch with my iPhone torch, I'm happy to say that I've only found minor problems! Mostly just little holes in the grouting that I wanted them to top up,. Could have been air bubbles or just not quite enough. I felt a bit bad marking out some of the defects cos the holes were quite small. But it's big enough for an ant to crawl out of and I don't want bugs to have ANY access if I can help it. Also asked ID to make the grouting in the shower area as close to the level of th tile as possible. This means less depth for mould to grow in and easier to wipe off with a cloth. During the installation of the toilet roll holder, the guy drilled at the wrong place and so one tile is damaged but ID said it will be retiled and the accessories refitted to make good. Water pressure if great too! The common toilet has much stronger pressure than the master though. Probably cos the water has to run through the common to get to the master. Still both are good! I didn't manage to try the gas heater yet so I'll review that next time. Unfortunately, the water pools a little bit in the common shower. Well it drains, but there is still about 1.5mm of water left on top that doesn't drain away. Is this common? Should I be satisfied with that? I don't want stagnant water cos that just encourages mould. I've asked the ID to look at it to see if it's acceptable. See what she says. Aircon fan coils will be installed tomorrow! Can't wait to see it all. Another thing to tick off the list!
  22. Yeah everytime we show people pictures they keep asking where we keep the handcuffs and chains. Lol. I tell them that's in the bedside table.
  23. OMG you splashed out on the haiku fan? Its beautiful though. Glad your brick wall issue is fixed to your satisfaction. And I like the hollow brick wall. Pretty similar to what I have. heh. Does that mean I'm complimenting my own house? Hmm.. oh well! I love mine too!
  24. Haha I can understand your excitement too! Esp since you've been away for so long! I KNEW nothing was being done over the weekend and still i went down. 3 times in two days! With no work being done! lol!!
  25. Hey HansamuQ! Thanks for dropping by. I hope to post more pics soon but currently the house is FULL of carpentry so it's hard to get a decent shot. What I will say is that the toilets are pretty much done and we are loving it! As for reno cost, its about 80k with plumbing and electricals. Not cheap we know.
