I haven't really documented the yard area much but only because it is hard to photograph and is very basic. The yard is where our gas heater and rubbish chute are located. I am also very glad we added the sink because it's really easy to fill up a bucket for mopping and I can also wring out my mop there. Have yet to test out our washing machine and dryer.
LED T5 bulbs apparently only come in limited colour tones so ours turned out slightly whiter than we had hoped for. We really hate white light but we really shouldn't let them go to waste so we are using them until they blow... which might be a long time considering it is LED hahaha...
Finally took pictures of our store room door/chalkboard wall! This is directly in front of our main door and I think I'll have lots of fun writing welcome messages and meal plans for the week. This was something I really wanted and requested my husband and ID help achieve.
Your staircase handrail using metal? will it rust after years?

Can share where you guys bought cheap lighting?
Any JB store recommended?
Industrial theme lighting..

Need some ideas on pendent light ... sort of like a centrepiece over my kitchen island.
I have been scouting on the net and found a few that suits the industrial theme (although mine is not the raw industrial style). The colour theme used for my kitchen are mainly grey, wood grains & stainless steel.
The 3D rendering of how my kitchen should look like:

Received my first taobao shipment today, looked very impressive. All came in good order except one of the metal shelving (bombshelter sort) that had a scratch as it was not packed properly. Otherwise the taobao shipment was perfect.
Here are some items I particularly liked - quality was superb too:
Kitchen Tap ( heavy and solid)
Clock (Fabulous workmanship)

I'm really looking forward to unboxing my taobao purchases next week. Hopefully delivered on Monday.
Some of my purchases were a bit more expensive as compared to other sellers on taobao
But I wanted to only purchase from 1 crown or 4-5 diamond sellers or tmall sellers
Tmall sellers are generally more trustworthy as they represent commercial shops
Surfing the various sellers on taobao is quite time intensive as there is really a lot of rubbish out there
For industrial type furniture, the key word is "loft", so put 家具 or 灯 behind it to get the respective hits for furniture and lighting
I usually sort by "信用" to get the crown sellers
I also bought track lights from taobao - the variety is huge. Key word is 轨道灯
Anyway here my my taobao purchase links to share. Some of them I didn't buy in the end because it was going to take too long to ship to the China shipping centre.
Another reason to use Peeka because they will ask you whether you want to wait or cancel the order at no cost.

I honestly think it's really quite nice and would leave it like that but... It still feels kinda crumbly and stuff. So definitely will not withstand the moisture of the bathroom without painting it.
@XG6T Yeap Looking for this kind of feeling.. Is it started to crack already? So after paint wouldn't have any problem with moisture in bathroom?
-
You can try the Wall Story. I have seen some of their works - looks realistic, but from certain angles you can tell it is a wallpaper.
Will take a look thanks ya
-
IMHO if in kitchen should avoid just normal cement screed... Either paint over or use cement looking tiles better. Because kitchen considered high risk, high traffic, always wet/greasy etc
If use epoxy also not so bad..
For my bathroom wall, I initially wanted cement screed also but... after talking to contractors and my tiler, I will be painting with oil-based sealer and probably PU over it instead.
Any photo?

Update about the console
Managed to clean up the house and had it set up today. It comes without the legs attached. To assemble, We only need to screw in the legs. And put in the shelf for the middle compartment. Whole console is made of solid wood, very heavy.
All set up! The biggest problem we have with it, is with the sliding doors. They do not slide smoothly. Needed quite some work. We had to sand the grooves (where the wheels run), apply lubricant, loosen the bolt. A lot of trial and error to get it finally sliding smoothly. But for 600 SGD, it was a pretty good buy. When we received it few weeks ago, it was properly packed within a wooden crate support.
Hi,
may i know where do you get the light beside your console & how much is it?
-
That would be fantastic. I got mine from Hafary through my ID (so my wallet kanna whack 1x good one). Lol.
Aside to wallpaper, the visual effect is still reasonable except that the feel is not there. Its advantage is that you can remove it anytime you want.
Yah, agreed.. Was thinking if not happy with it just remove and paint my wall..
-
It's called CraftStone BTW and has a lot of other colors to choose from. But it's expensive compared to wallpaper. IMO if you want a brick wall, besides building it using real bricks, this is the only way to go in order to look real. Wallpaper is too fake when viewed using a naked eye. Another option i suggest is to buy craftstone from malaysia and find a local tiler. I believe you can save quite a bit as exchange rate is good now. I've seen people buying from TB also.
Any 3D wallpaper to make the visual look more realistic? Emmm...

Wooo... so smooth walls.. the kitchen walls have been plastered up. And I hereby certify that the kitchen walls are the smoothest and straightest of all in the whole house. Wonder if I should put a certificate of achievement on the kitchen wall to award them. Lol.. Looks quite cool actually. Now those pipes stand out like a ____ in a ______.
The random blue cramped toilet. Next time will want to change the door frame to black and that blue toilet... The toilet and the kitchen arguing. lol, cannot get along.
What do you guys think of the stairs? No budget to change the hand rails for now. lol.. glass panels $5k odd, new metal railings $3k odd.
Ready for tiling today.
Meanwhile, an update on the post bro DeadEnd mentioned about the HT-Hickory tiles from SBH. Thanks to him, he highlighted that his reno somewhere mid last year used the same series of tiles for his flooring but found out that the batch contained quite a number of cracked tiles and warped tiles. Upon laying the tiles, the warp was pretty obvious. Thanks to his experience, I am able to check the tiles in advance before laying the tiles and then noticing it too late. I checked the batch of tiles that I received and noticed that the packaging has this "RECTIFIED" all over it. Probably referring that the manufacturer has rectified the tile warp issue. Got the tiler to check the tiles for me earlier, he mentioned that the tiles were pretty good already. Only perhaps a handful or less were warped. He commented that tiles of such long format are very prone to such issue. The tiles that I have are considered very good liao. Upon researching on google, apparently the tiler was right. So they have a method of laying the tiles so that if there's any warp, it will not be that visible or "jialat" and ugly. Instead of the standard 50/50 layout, a 33/33/33 and or random layout is recommended. Will try to post up more on this later. Meanwhile, thanks and kudos again to bro DeadEnd.
Oh ya, one more thing is.. I'm pondering over whether to plaster the ceiling beams in the same colour as well for those outside of the kitchen.. Because the bottom base of the stairs I'll probably get them to do the same. Won't be painting over.
Hi, as you mention is the kitchen wall done by easy plaster to get the cement screed feeling as picture above?
-
Initially I thought cement screed on the wall was the way to go. But the contractor told me, for walls, they use this easy plaster or ezi plaster, anyway something along that line. Take a look at my t-blog. I'm using those for my kitchen walls.
@mrbytez is it this http://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/68948-sand-castle-in-the-air-part-i/page-2 ? #55 ?
Plastered up using easy plaster and then done? Can get the cement screed effect ?

I did something similar to stylocool. Got mine at Hafary.
So the material is tiles? Any other options to go for as tiles is abit out of budget

Living Room Reno
In order to have that industrial feel, brick wall is a must. White brick wall is just too common for us. So we have to make a decision between black and raw brick colors. In the end, we chose the raw color because if we want it to be black later we can simply just paint it but if we do black first then we can never do this raw color. Laying the whole wall with bricks is also too common so we requested our ID to do something different. Both my wife and i love to visit cafes and we love the ambience created by shining lights on the brick wall. In order to have lights shining up, our ID proposed dividing the wall into 2 halves, upper half brick wall and lower half a wooden panel to house the lighting.
The wooden panel with the lighting. The ambience is exactly what we wanted. Simply stunning!
When it comes to home decor, we feel that the living room design is very important as it's the first thing our guests and friends will see so we spent a lot of time brainstorming with our ID. Like everyone else, we refer to magazines, pinterest, houzz and visited popular furniture shops for inspirations. Our ID came up with very bold ideas and refreshing ideas. He even suggested to do structural changes to the living room in order to make it look less like a HDB flat. Everyone knows great ideas usually don't come cheap. Got to watch the wallet. So in the end we thought about doing something different and yet useful.
In a lot of industrial themed home decor, people usually have black conduit piping for the fans and track lights. IT'S JUST TOO COMMON! So our ID came up with these metal beams and have the track lights installed on it. My wife and i love it as it's very loft with all that metal.
This is how it looks like with the track lights. Too bad HDB ceiling is too low. If not it will look much better.
Hi,
May I know where you get the bricks wall from? Thanks

So as you guys know I have been busy travelling to HK and being stuck in reservist the past couple of weeks, leaving our ID to handle the renos (which should be the case) without my usual daily supervision. I am pleased to announce that the contractors have finished their work and we are finally at the end of our reno (save for some touch ups)!
We have also officially moved in and have been sleeping at our new home since Saturday which is when my wife came back to Singapore. Although there has been a lot of cleaning already done (courtesy of the wife), we have had to clean it again every day because of the residual dust lying on the cabinets or in the air, paint and glue stains left behind etc. Actually, we shouldn't have to clean paint stains right??
Whatever the case, it's such a good feeling to move into a home you can truly call your own.
I'll be posting pics of the completed reno in the next couple of posts so bear with me.
Let's start with the kitchen shall we:
Kitchen Pics
So here is our completed kitchen with the quartz top and white glass backsplash finally in. Do ignore the unsightly plastic bag hanging at the window area. The appliances such as stove, oven, washer and dryer have also been installed so we're all set! Citygas is only coming to turn on the gas tomorrow though, so that will complete things. Note to self: take a close up picture of the Rinnai 3CG stove.
Loving the reflection of the under cabinet LED strip lights bouncing off the glass backsplash. Adds to the brightness of the kitchen and we can really see what we're cooking.
The Samsung fridge we bought is nice and big, not to mention white to fit the look of the kitchen. The shelf next to it will be used to place some crockery and perhaps dry foodstuff, can't wait to bring those over from my parent's place where they still sit.
Overall, quite pleased with the look and space of the kitchen.
A close up view of the light produced by the LED strip lights.
Can't get enough of looking at the AJ replica wall lights - they create a softer mood and provide nice ambient lighting when you don't need to turn on all the kitchen lights.
A closer view of our humongous fridge and Commune shelf.
View of the 'yard' area of the kitchen which houses our washer, dryer and cleaning tools.
Lastly, a close up view of our Sellena sink together with our tap/pull out spray faucet dual combo. The spray faucet comes in very handy when washing stubborn food remains off of plates etc.
Hi Vicx, thanks for replying Anyway where did u get the shelf beside ur fridge? How much?

Hi,
Am thinking to cement screed my wall. Is cement screed advisable to use on wall? Will it have a lot crack line after years?
Anyway, is cement screed & concrete screed is the same thing? Thanks.

PICTURE UPDATES CONTINUED - LIVING ROOM / KITCHEN
Hi folks, here are some latest pictures of our house in its present state. Like our MBR, it's still relatively undecorated & bare, but that also makes it easier for us to maintain and clean the house. Here's presenting our living room and kitchen:
You may ignore the mushy message the wife wrote for me upon my return from reservist training.
Pardon a bit of the blurness in the pictures. I have to admit I'm still not quite there when it comes to photography.
Still not very comfortable with the bare wall behind the sofa. Urgh. We're supposed to put up some typography art there by pasting wooden/acrylic letters on it, but still have no idea where to get it done! Any ideas or lobangs?
Study room - the arrangement of random printouts is stuck on using washi tape. Inspiration from below:
Hi Vicx,
May I know which laminate you used for your full height cabinet in your living area (The one with full black board with some writing)? Thanks

Bought all our electrical items from harvey norman millenia walk over the weekend.
1) Sony 50" 3D internet tv
We were set on getting a samsung tv, till we saw sony was having CNY promo. $1399 with 3D glasses/flick remote thrown in..
2) Samsung 7kg front loader washer
Our options were panasonic/Samsung/electrolux.. panasonic was the cheapest at $499 but my wife doesnt like the design and the knobs.
Electrolux has no digital display.
so we are left with samsung.
We love it's sleek and clean design.
Furthermore it has function like digital inverter, eco bubble, diamond drum.
3) yamaha soundbar
Initially we plan on getting a sony soundbar to pair up with the sony tv. It was on display and sounded loud. Design is also sleek and clean but the salesman brought us to test the yamaha soundbar to compare.
Indeed it sounded better than sony.. it cost the same so we decided to go with the yamaha.
4) Tefal iron
5) Rowenta Vacumn
6) Rowenta garment steamer
7) Samsung microwave
8) Electrolux toaster
9) Hp Envy 15" notebook
Also at milennia walk, we visited commune.
Saw a nice looking bench to pair up with our dining table from Picket&Rail. Also saw a nice tv console from the same series.
May i know where do you get the console (last photo)? and how much is it?
