  1. Dark staining on your roof is usually indicative of an algae problem. Algae thrives in damp and dark areas. Since dark staining looks very unappealing, homeowners are understandably concerned with eliminating those stains. There are a few ways to go about it. Switch to an algae-resistant roof material Algae staining is most common on asphalt shingles and wood shakes. Materials like metal, tile, and slate, aren’t going to allow algae to grow and stain your roof. You can speak with a Spokane roofing company about an alternate roof material that would work good for you. Unfortunately, these materials tend to be on the expensive side and since algae staining doesn’t affect your roof’s performance, many homeowners don’t want to replace their roof just to eliminate algae stains. Use bleach Mix one part bleach to four parts water and gently pour it across any affected areas of your roof. Bleach will kill any algae. Do not use a pressure washer to apply bleach mixture as the high pressure could actually damage your shingles. Also do not use more bleach than the one-to-four parts ratio or it can damage any landscaping that is beneath the edges of the roof after runoff. The problem with this method is that it won’t be a long term solution and algae stains can eventually return. Install copper or zinc strips Copper or zinc strips placed along the peaks of the roof above the affected area will introduce ions to the algae every time it rains. This will not only kill existing algae but prevent it from growing in the future. It’s a longer term solution but one not everyone will like because of the aesthetics of the metal strips. Eliminate shade If overhanging tree branches are causing sections of your roof to be shaded all hours of the day, simply cutting back those branches so sunlight hits those areas can prevent algae from growing there. 2. Hi, Just want to share my experience on the contract manager at MVM roofing. I was looking around for a contractor since last year to re-roof. Went for a few companies and finally shortlist two. Was deciding between Soleil & MVM. MVM kept on calling to try & convince to sign a contract, gave projects of other customers...quite persistent, ensuring the company's quality.. etc. The company has been around for a while & is experienced to do re-roofing. My bad experience came after i decided to go with MVM. It is not the company but the contract manager. I did not think it should be a complicated contract but beware of what bad attitude & service you will get after signing with him. After signing, his attitude was since you will only do your roof one time, he can start to abuse & bully his customer since he can get away. At first, the discussion was to start in 3 weeks' time after signing over verbal discussion but after signing, i was told to start the 3rd week of next month. Since i didnt expect him to renegade verbal agreement, i had to endure waiting till another 4 weeks. But that is just the beginning of my regret dealing with this salesman.
  3. Hey guys! I am looking at replacing the existing shingle roof on my summer home and am looking at using steel roofing as a long term alternative. Any good roofing company to suggest who would do this for me? Empire roofing solutions at Toronto(REMOVED LINK), is that a good choice?
  4. Replacing a roof is an expensive project, and can be avoided if it is regularly monitored and maintained. A roof should last for at least 20 years depending on the materials used, but any number of things can damage a roof enough that it has to be replaced before it is 20 years old. One of the major reasons for roof repairs and replacements is due to leaks that go unnoticed until it is too late and there is too much damage. Here are a few ways to prevent your roof from being damaged by leaks. Regularly maintaining your roof After each season change it is wise that you climb up on top of your house and check your roof for any damage done by extreme weather. Roofs are typically constructed to withstand the harshest of weather conditions, but there is no way to control how harsh the weather really is, and often times roofs need repairing and maintenance after major storms in order to prevent major damage. Regular checks and maintenance of your roof are definitely worth the hassle because it is the easiest and quickest way to find damage and prevent it from causing further and more expensive problems. Signs of possible leaks The Happy House Wife states that one of the sure fire ways to tell if there is a water leak in your roof is by watching from brown water spots on your ceiling or peeling paint around any skylights. Obviously if your shingles are falling off there is something wrong with the roof, and it needs to be taken care of immediately. Black spots or stains are a signal of mold, which must also be addressed as soon as possible. You can stop a leak from creating these problems by regularly checking your roof for leaks, and taking care of any minor or possible problems immediately. Finding the source of a leak Finding a leak can be tough, but if you know what to look for and when, it will be much easier. Take the time on a rainy day to climb into your attic and inspect the ceiling for any moisture that might be entering. Loose or buckling shingles are also a sign of possible leaks, and should be fixed before it is too late. Keep your downspouts and gutters cleaned out as frequently as possible to prevent clogs that can direct water onto the roof instead of down to the ground. You might even consider hiring a professional roofing contractor to check your roof for any possible leaks, and save you from major damages, as they know exactly what to look for.
