Okay, finally made my final call, bought the following:
AVR - Onkyo 608
Speakers - Fronts & Rears : Deft Tech Procinema 800 I Centre : Deft Tech Procinema 1000
Subwoofer - Velodyne CHT-8Q
Blu-ray Player: Sony BDP-S370
The only thing I bought against the mainstream here is the BP, got a cheapy Sony BDP-S370 as a bundled deal w/ my TV, feature-wise should be good enough to me. Besides, I got a Sony USB wireless dongle which I can use w/ the 370 BP, I guess it'd be fine for now. Might upgrade to an OPPO player in a later time when we decide to put a TV in our bedroom
Thanks for all the suggestion here, especially to brother vicenzo70. Really appreciate your tips and suggestions.
Now just wait for the completion of our house's renovation ...

As of the above enquiries pls ~ tks!Heard that HDB will give us the whatever balance of the 50% cash from our sold flat and we have to settle ALL payments during 1st appt & not on the 2nd appt?
Not true. You can read it here: http://www.hdb.gov.sg/fi10/fi10322p.nsf/w/...ts?OpenDocument

u can still do tat. =PToo late, poisoned already
Why throw good money at lousy items? Its, after all, a one time well worth investments. And I believethat one should enjoy life with balance.
Yeah, I know. But there is a wife and two kids, plus a big HDB loan on the other side, hard to balance leh ...

Get the OPPO83 & you'll probably solved your upgrading itch for the next 2 years or so.The OPPO83 (S$999) has been benchmark against hi end BR players (Denon, Lexicon) that cost in the range of
S$3,000 above but OPPO still outperform them all. That is why, the OPPO players (DVD or BR) is value for money
& highly recommended. In fact Im using the OPPO 980 as my CD transport. The player cost me $250 & its been
benchmarked against high end players like the Bel Canto (S$1,200)
Cheers
Man, you poisoning me leh ... I feel I shouldn't have come here asking for suggestions, should just go down and buy a cheapy Sony or Samsung HTS set and be done w/ it
-
Actually, b4 I bought 80, audio iconic actually compare it wif 83 for me... On their projector (dark knight). As I'm no videophile back then (I'm still no better now), I really can't see any major diff thru my naked eye. Basically, wat u trying to say, bro Vic is as long I'm happy wif my stuff, I shld let it be...Fengwei, I guess I'll stick to my 80. Sori, bro...
Thx bro Vic.
That's okay. Since we sold our current flat fairly easily w/ some gain, I might top up a bit
-
Let see wat bro Vic hav to say... I'm really on da fence here.. SighWell, since your tv is 50', I'm sure vic would suggest you to go for the 83
Your current setup is exactly what I'm getting, except the TV (mine will be smaller due to my tiny living room
)
-
Oh no, bro Vic. Mine is 50" kuro wif Oppo 80. I tot wat I watchin now is gd enuff. Sigh, now got itchy hands. Shld I or shldn't I upgrade my 1mth old Oppo. Tough decision...I'll take your 80 if you decide to upgrade
Original budget was 3k, now over quite a bit liao ...

HiImportantly is to get a good Receiver & speakers first.
Procinema 600 or 800 will suffice accompany by Onkyo 608 (good to future proof your equipment). It would set u back around $3K
plus cables.
Then again, some shops offers instalment payments, so take advantage of that.
As for BR player, the OPPO 80 ($588) will suffice if your TV is no bigger than 46". The OPPO83 will cost you a hefty $999
if you can afford it. Settle for cheaper BR player unless your finance allows you to upgrade.
Cheers
Went to KEC today, checked out the 608 receiver and procinema 800 combo, sounds great!
I was quoted about $27xx w/ cables and installation for 800 and 608 combo, that leaves me no enough money to buy the OPPO 80
Wonder if the procinema 600 speakers would be sufficient for my living room (which isn't too big anyway).
They don't carry OPPO player, so I have to get it elsewhere.
Originally planned to buy Samsung 46" LED, but after some comparison and readup, now I'm thinking of getting a Plasma from Panasonic, most likely the Viera TH-P42S10. It's slightly smaller, but I like the color and movies better on this screen.
-
there is onkyo 608 which just arrive not long ago, maybe you can consider tat. if you intend to get def tech system + onkyo receiver, price should be ard 3k. including the oppo player, may cost ard 3.5k.Man, money doesn't come easy leh
3K is already pushing the limit from the other side, and there is no end if chasing for the latest and the best ...
Given 3k budget, what's your suggestion then? Thanks btw

HiCongrats on getting a new home. Thankfully you have a clear budget for a proper HTS.
Let me help you to decide.
Within your budget, the usual suspects for sats speakers -
1. Definitive Technology Pro Cinema series. A few forummers in this forum are proud owners
2. Klipsch
3. Mordaunt Short MS
4. Tannoy Arena
5. B&W MT20/25/30
Items 4 & 5 are a bit pricier but what you pay for is what you get.
Usually I would recommend a good sub woofer to replace the exisiting set up. But if youre happy with the current sub, keep it by
all means.
As for receiver, look no further than Onkyos & yamahas.
Bluray player, get the OPPO80 or 83. The upscale conversion of these OPPo players makes your DVD pix looks like BR pix.
Cheers
After some quick research, decide to go w/ the following combo:
Blu-ray Player: BDP-80 or BDP-83
Amp/Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR507 or TX-SR607
Speakers: Definitive Technology ProCinema 800, 600 or 60 depends on how much money left from the above two
Since I'm setting up 5.1ch HTS only, is 607 so much better than 507? Will the 607 be overkill? There is quite some price difference between these two, but I do like the idea of having a better amp if it does enhance the quality.
Any comments on this setup and which to choose?
Again, my budget is 3k, but I don't mind saving a bit if possible
Thanks and cheers!

From what some forummer's have posted - Logixx 8 WAS2444ME is now nego to $1430 (before $150 rebate from Bosch SG) at MDS, so you should set that as your baseline now. That's my target. But my wife thinks it's a bit over our budget to buy such an exp washing machine
She wants a dryer too ... Oh boy, I wish I were rich ...

Hmm now, non-Malaysian PR sellers also have an added advantage over Singaporean/Malaysian sellers. In the event of SPR quota exceeded, non-Malaysian PR sellers can still sell their house to non-Malaysian PRs but Singaporean/Malaysian sellers cannot do that. Therefore some non-Malaysian PR sellers may try to demand for higher price in the area where SPR quota is exceeded. Some non-Malaysian PR buyers will agree to the higher price because they can only buy from them?I guess that's why my flat was sold in 3 days after I posted the ad, even w/o going through agent. The buyers said they had seen quite a few resale flats, but couldn't buy because of this quota thing. After seeing our house, they liked it, and they were eligible to buy, so our deal was fixed in an hour after viewing.

don go on sunday as some of the shops not open.Okay, thanks for the reminder. Probably go there on Sat afternoon, after I come back from the PC Show

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd go down to Aldeph sometime over the weekend to check these out. Been dreaming of a good sound system for a long time, finally dream coming true
Can't wait to move in to our new (but now still empty) flat ...

We went to KLP's Mega Discount & was offer the following price for Bosch:WM - Logixx 8 WAS2444ME : $1450 (before $150 rebate from Bosch SG)
Oven - HBA23B550J (incl of EcoClean panels) : $1280
Haven't had a chance to go HN, or Courts or DB to compare prices. Is this a reasonable price?
Great prices! I've been to HN, Courts, and BD, definitely higher in those stores.
Mega Discount will be out last stop after walking around these stores. Next we'd visit everjoint and goh ah bee.

using this with 2x 2.5kW blowers and 1x 6.0kW blower. running well and very quiet compressor.Thanks. Sounds nice, although we don't have such kind of high power blowers, only a couple of 1kw ones.
So 3.3k is reasonable? I need to buy asap 'cause my reno guy is moving in very soon. They want us to settle A/C first
-
Oh man, how come I missed this one
-
the sellers should already have gotten their in principle approval prior to signing the OTP. if they did not, and now they are going to get fined by the bank for cancelling the loan. its their own fault.but don't worry. i'm sure u will soon find another buyer.
You see, it's gonna take about a week to get the principle approval. But buyer needs to have the signed OTP form to get the approval (loan) from the bank. But this thing crossed over the month ...
Then agent will loose "bank referral fee" and "buyer's agent fees". And risk of buyers wanting to claim back the cancellation fee from agent because of breach of duty.Poor thing !
That's the thing I'm afraid of. The agent definitely won't get the money. But I hope the seller won't lose money to the bank because of something we can't control (but the agent should've warned us before letting us sign the OTP)
It's a lose-lose-lose situation for 3 parties sigh...The quota changes every month, that's the troublesome part.
That's true. This system definitely got holes right now ...
u mean the buyer take 1 mth to get bank approval?I thought OTP need to exercise within 14 day. Not mah?
If the buyer has sign the LO, on top of cancellation fee , they need to pay lawyer fee too.
Buyer LOST BIG
No, it only took 5 business days for him to get the bank approval, but he only started it on 28th of May. When the bank loan was approved, it's June 3rd already ...
I don't know how the buyer processed the bank loan, hopefully he won't lose much because of this
The statement is definitely "clear & clean" to HDB, but not to seller/buyer. Now both fall into the "hole". Don't forget, buyer can take a maximum of 14 days to exercise the OTP (resale), if the booking date is on end this month when buyer is eligible to buy, on first day of next month HDB update the quota and show, "buyer cannot buy" - whose fault?- Hurry the buyer to exercise otp & submit resale application by end of the month?
- Seller make sure to sell from first of the month to mid of the month?
- or should a better system be in place which always show "available quota for the next 15 days"? So everybody understands?
HDB fails to realise the implication of the 14 days, or the praticality of the system, just know how to put words nicely to its.....sigh red tape! Rooms of improvement to be done.
You are sssoooo right! Base on the current HDB policy, we'd better don't sign the OTP when it's one to two weeks to the month end. Which means we only got the first two weeks to process the purchase. Otherwise the paperwork might cross over to next month, and the whole deal might be off.
"available quota for the next 15 days" is definitely a better practice than the current one. Or just base on the sign date of OTP 'cause that's when the deal is made, but only give 14 days max to submit the application. The Quote should be based on the date of sign instead of the date of submission 'cause we can control the sign date of OTP but there are quite some uncertainty for the submission date.

The advice and conditions for the ethnic/SPR quota is quite clear (see http://www.hdb.gov.sg/fi10/fi10321p.nsf/w/...IP?OpenDocument ) :"The ethnic proportions and SPR quota are updated on the first day of every month.
It is applicable for resale applications submitted to HDB for the same month.
Buyers and Sellers have to ensure that the ethnic proportion and/or SPR Quota are met at the point of the resale application"
The buyer's agent is quite new or inexperienced ? The standard checklist for every agent to check (1) bankruptcy (it will invalidate any contract) (2) verify correct owner and NRIC (3) verify eligibility (4) verify SPR/ethnic quota
Anyway, the buyer's agent would be stressed ... as she has breached her duty of care to her buyers
Thanks for the info. Seems our deal is off
Actually it's not totally the agent's fault lah. She's a good friend, just helping us out w/ the paper work, we buyer/seller do the purchase on our own. Before we signed the OTP, she did check the SPR Quota, and our deal was fine since all ethnic group could buy then. But the buyers needed some time to get the bank loan, which stretched across the month. But the agent didn't check the SPR Quota before they submitted the application, which was of course rejected
Now the buyers are not eligible to buy my flat, but they already got the bank loan. Now the buyers might be fined by the bank because of this, and I need to find a buyer for my flat again.
Everything was going so smoothly until now .... Sigh

Hi All,
I just got a couple of quotes for the Daikin System3 aircon w/ 4 ticks inverter, model: 3MKD71ESG. Upgrade to 1/2" insulation, G23 copper piping and installation, all together for $3300 nett. Is this price reasonable? I know GC is selling for quite a bit higher than this price. Our initial budget is $3k, but my wife like the Daikin because her sister (who is in construction business for more than 20 years) suggested to buy this brand.
Any comment on this one?
Many thanks.
Frank

i saw from bosch website there are 3 models belonging to the logixxx 8. WAS24444ME, WAS28444ME and WAS32794ME.was quoted 1430 + $150 rebate from Mega discount for WAS24444ME.
That's pretty good price comparing w/ Best Denk...

We were at Best yesterday evening to look for washing machine and dryer, saw the bundled deal: Bosch WAE16060SG+WTC84100GB at $1870, plus a $150sgd check from Bosch. I know these were made in Thailand, wonder if anyone here using them and how's the feedback on them?
Our new flat is under reno now, a lot stuff to buy ...

I'm sure HDB needs further action to "fine tune" to close the "hole" in this system. Within 14 days, many things can happen. System should reflect the "actual" SPR Quota number for the "next 14 day" or even slightly longer and on-going. Can not just based upon "first day of each month", - may be HDB doesn't have man-computer to reflect this based on "real time" or "14 day later".You can write in to the press, see what HDB replies. May be HDB will tell you more specifically that it is seller's responsibility to accept $1k booking before 15 of the month. Accepting 1K after this date is seller's own risk?? Actually, yr agent should have highlighted this "risk" to you before hand.
Thanks for the reply. Writing to the press didn't come to my mind until you said so. I guess I'm gonna try that and see how. Our agent didn't expect this would happen, she didn't highlight us the risk because I was selling the house on my own, she's only handling the paper work. I called HDB about this and was told to appeal but there is no guarantee that our deal would go through
Anyway, we'd gonna try and see how it goes. Actually it's not a big deal to us sellers 'cause we'd lose nothing but some time. It's the buyer who might be in trouble 'cause he applied bank loan already. If the deal can't go through, he'd have a lot explanation work to do w/ the bank, and might face a fine or something ...

Dear All,
I'm quite new to this, although I've been wanting a decent sound system for many years. But didn't bother buying anything for the rental (then bought) old HDB flat.
Since we are moving to our new 5rm HDB flat soon, I guess it's time to get a decent sound system. We've decided on the TV and BR player (Samsung 46" LED w/ BR bundle), what else do I need to buy to have a decent sound system? My usage would be movies and music, and budget is 2.5k to 3k (not including the TV and BR player). 5.1 speaker should be sufficient I guess, and our place isn't too big, about 3.5m to the TV, but the living room is pretty decent which includes a study room in the hall.
Your suggestion would be very appreciated.
Thanks and Cheers!

Yeah, I just copied whatever you have in your sig, except the player
Maybe I'd regret down the road, but we might need another player anyway... So for now the Sony should be fine
Its reviews aren't bad anyway.
I did ask them about changing the rear speakers to white ones, but was told they have to be special orders, which takes much longer time. Thought it over, white speakers on not-so-white wall probably don't look nice either. So we scrapped that idea and stick to black ones. Also asked them about mounting the front speakers on TV wall, but in that case they can't use better quality (thick wires) which they promised to give us FOC, only normal thin wires can be used to make the setup look nice. So we scrapped that idea too.
