  1. Dear all, I just installed 2 CCTV with recording in my HDB flat. - 2 cameras (can see clearly even in darkness) (@ S$95 each) - 2 connecting cables (10m) (@ S$18 each) - 1 recorder (with network function for viewing with mobile phone or any computer) (@ S$400) - Installation (lay cables for 2 points) (@ S$120) - Network setup for mobile monitoring ( still unknown but max is S$150 - according to the shop that sells these products ) Notes: I paid $650 for the equipments from a shop at Level 2 Sim Lim Square. ( Just next to the elevator - you cannot miss it ) Good luck to all!
  2. Dear all, I just laid my Cat6 cables in my HDB home (together with renovation) to ensure "futureproof". Seldom people do this because normally WI-FI is sufficient. (but not for me because i wanted LAN connection) Note: Do not to ask a normal electrician to do this as there is a very high chance they will screw everything for you ( FYI - I only get it right the 3rd time). Till now, sad to say that very few people is aware that Singapore is lagging far behind in "connection speed", so by telling a normal electrician that you wanted to do this kind of "not usual works", they will not understand your needs and may get it wrong. To ensure smooth execution, do the following: 1) Go to LHS Electronics Enterprise ( Address: 10 Jalan Besar, #02-27, Sim Lim Tower, S208787 ) to buy - Cat 6 cable ( They sell loose cables, so buy a bit more (just in case) as it is very difficult to join them - price is $0.60/m - ask for the better twisted Cat 6 cables ) - Faceplate and Connectors ( ask the shop people for the correct Cat 6 connector - it is different from Cat 5/5e. For faceplate, ask for the good type. Price is $10 for single point and $17 for double point ). - "Base Plate" ( i do not know the name for this but this is the "box" between the faceplate and the wall - if your trucking is not the concealed type - But you should buy this together with the faceplate because some are round edges and others are sharp edges. If you do not buy together, the end result may be visually very ugly. ) 2) Call Starhub's Hub Troopers to arrange for a "qualified electrician" to lay Cat 6 cables for you in your house. Starhub will charge you $53.50 to link you up with a qualified electrician via a site visit. 3) During the site visit, you are free to tell the Hub Troopers and the "qualified electrician" your needs ( these people will know what you are talking about ). It is up to you to negotiate the price with the electrician ( with Starhub's Hub Troopers people beside you, the "qualified electrician" will not charge high because if you complain to Starhub later, the electrician that service you may be removed as Starhub's contractor and hence lose future Starhub business, which means a lot to them normally ). In my case, the charge was $180 for 4xRJ45 points with Cat 6 cable using existing and new trunking - new trucking will be provided by the "qualified electrician". ) ( Remember to tell them that you will provide the required cables, connectors, faceplates and "base plates". ) 4) On the day of laying the cables, the "qualified electrician" will come down to your place and do the job. It may be noisy and dusty ( if drilling is required. ) At the end of the job, the "qualified electrician" will prove to you that the cables are indeed working using an internationally recognised testing equipment / gadget. 5) Connect your modem / router to your cables and enjoy the new "futureproof" infrastructure. I hope this is useful - just sharing my experience.
  3. NEVER NEVER ENGAGE the locksmith at the corner of Block 136, Potong Pasir. The locksmith (Ah Siong) is a broad daylight liar and his workmanship is extremely lousy.
  4. Dear all, Unless you have a lot of time for your renovations, avoid this contractor. Bottomline: Low quote = Long/Massive delay Do not believe the below: a) Definitely no problem! b) Relax, no worry! c) We work on Sundays and Public Holidays for you. d) We have people to finish the job on time. If you have to proceed, do remember to: 1) put in a clause in your contract to state the monetary compensation for each day of delay. 2) ensure your counter party is Hoon Hoe Brothers, not Eagle Design. (This is to ensure the demerit points are recorded under Hoon Hoe Brothers when a credible dispute break out). Despite these imperfections, I would add that Mr Tan is a responsible contractor as he answered and returned most of my calls. I believe the delays are due the "slowness" of his workers or his sub-contractors. I see that they tends to stretch the works. This is my remarks after dealing with Mr Tan for past 2 months. Net, if you have a tight schedule, avoid this contractor. Otherwise, it should be fine if you have the time. Good luck to all out there!
