  1. another round of updates!

Mr B told me that they will begin wall tiling today. excitedddddddddddddd for the makeover! oh, and we were busy this weekend - bought the ceiling fans and the aircon as well, and arranged delivery of our appliances etc. also picked up our coffee table! Tomorrow (Tuesday) our bathroom items will arrive!

For ceiling fan, we went for Fanco's FFM 6000 (48"). For 3 bedrooms. We got the 'antique' colour, which is like brass and brownish - goes with the parquet flooring i guess. Got it at a good price (i think?!) - $230 inclusive of LED tricolour lights and a remote (not the original, but who cares?). Installation is $40 per fan. Bought the fans from Extreme Lighting at Balestier. The salesman, Danny, was really helpful and very knowledgable and confident without being condescending or arrogant. :) recommended!

We bought our aircon (at long last) from Gain City Sungei Kadut. Advantage: 5 mins from home! Haha. The salesman is the one we previously met, Mr Derek Low. he's been working at gain City since 1993!!!! very helpful, very polite, very knowledgable. thumbs up. We bought the Mitsubishi Starmex (2 ticks) system 4. Upgraded to the bigger inch tube, and also added $50 to increase our MBR's BTU. So it's 21,000 BTU + 12,000 BTU + 9,000 BTU + 9,000 BTU. Total: $4,249. They have 0% credit card instalment, which is really helpful.

    Ok, photo time!!

    Aircon

Aircon - Mitsubishi Starmex Sys 4. From Gain City.

    Fan

Ceiling fan. Fanco FFM 6000, 48". From Extreme Lighting.

    Tiles

Tiles have arrived, ready for tiling!

    Empty common toilet

Empty common toilet. All ready for tiling.

    Empty kitchen

    Empty kitchen!

    coffee table

coffee table that we bought from FortyTwo.sg!!! only $59. looks really nice in real life too, but i couldn't get a photo of it cos it was all dismantled haha.
So it seems that we will need to alter the false ceiling in the living room since our aircon is so big and bulky. Haiz. Hope Mr B doesn't charge too much :(
    Lastly, I have a question:
Do you know any good electrician who can replace my light switches? We are planning to buy the light switches from a hardware shop and then get an external electrician. Scared Mr B will charge very high!

  2. Expect a jam with the long weekend! I went in on Monday and was stuck in a jam on my way back for 2.5 hours. Joined the returning queue at 1.30 pm, cleared customs at 4pm. But it was worth it :)

The news just now reported massive jams at the causeway.

Even last week on a weekday and it took me 1.5 hours at about 9pm. .now school holidays and half the Singapore population is there. Make sure you factor in this 2 ways

phew! i think we're not going to go then... the other time we came back from jb on a friday night (11 dec), we were stuck for 3.5 hours. moved 3km in 3 hours. got home at 2.45am. traumatizing.

  3. hello everyone! does anyone know how much it costs just to replace the switch? i don't need to do rewiring.. jst remove the old switch n replace with a new switch. am thinking of asking an external electrician to do it. please let me know, or please feel free to intro me to ur reasonably priced electrician. thank you!

  4. thank you! yes, we have been going every day to check the progress (after work with a torchlight cos they switch off the main electricity!).

we were planning to go into m'sia this xmas weekend. now not sure anymore... everyday got updates about how horrible the causeway situation is. scared we'll be stuck for hours and hours...

anyway, reno update: all hacking done! i think today they are laying the prepacked screed. tiles have arrived too! forgot to take photos yesterday, paiseh.. next time shall do so :)

  5. Hi scarlett!!

Okay sounds like we need to make a trip down to WasserBath at Geylang then! :D!!

And ooh I didn't know there were such integrated rainshowers with instant heaters. How cool! We're not too interested in rainshowers so we haven't been researching, but glad they solved that issue! Hope it works well for you too!

And parquet flooring! *envious* Wish we could have some too, old or not, but ours is very retro tiling all over and it's so expensive to install new parquet floors! I'm sure it'll look lovely after it's been polished!

yes go for it! haha yeah, hopefully it'll look nice. :D

i'm now in a fix. we need to get ceiling fans and everything is SO expensive. the husband and i liked the fanco s8 fans, but i realised they're 'malaysian' fans, so no safety mark. that makes it risky to buy, right? that's not cheap also. $220 with light (non LED) and remote. we want LED :(

  6. Hi Scarlett, yay to starting renovation!! Wah, you have parquet floor! Just need to polish and it will be good as new. Looks like you are almost finished with your shopping.. hahaha

I also got instant heater with rain shower but from rinnai. Hope it works!

hello!!! yes we are almost done actually! just the ceiling fans and aircon to go. TV will come later maybe in jan-feb.. need to get our finances back up. i am interested in the Acorn brand ceiling fan. tested it at one of the shops yest and it was pretty nice. but so expensive. $300+ for the fan+light+remote! :(

and yes! i think we will go ahead and polish the floors. my contractor quoted $800 for grinding n polishing, so it's pretty ok. for 3 bedrooms.

fingers crossed for our showers ;)

  7. Hi scarlett!!

Wow loving your purchases! We are aiming for Fujioh hob and hood set as well! And very interested in your Wasserbath purchases, we never managed to visit them, are they really competitive in pricing?

For the instant heater and the rainshower, I remember reading quite a few people's T-blogs that instant heater cannot use with rainshowers in HDB, something about the water pressure not high enough? Did Wasserbath/Hoe Kee tell you about it?

hi ricepapergirl! thanks for dropping by! :D

yes, fujioh is pretty reliable. my mom's been using it for the past 4.5 years and it's been working fine. also looks nice :D I found Wasserbath's pricing pretty competitive. the salesgirl gave discounts on EVERYTHING! we actually wanted to get the common toilet's basin and cabinet from there too. they had a pretty attractive one, for the basin+cabinet+mirror, only $376 or something. we bought the basin+cabinet only for $380 from Hoe Kee. :( but since we already chose the Hoe Kee one, we let it pass. you should go take a look at Wasser. we went to the Geylang outlet, pretty decent range.

the rainshower we got is the 'new' type - integrated rain shower and instant heater! so i think water pressure should not be that much of a problem hopefully! :)

  8. Ok! So as promised, here are the details of what we bought so far (kitchen and 2 bathroom) :D all in all, we spent about $2,940. pretty ok, i think.

    Stove

cooker hob - fujioh, from Hoe Kee

    Hood

cooker hood - fujioh, from Hoe Kee. it was a package of $699 + $40 (cos we chose the white hob). we liked the hob because it has 3 rings, and one of them is the 'inner flame' ring. apparently it's better for cooking cos the flame won't waver if u switch on the fan or if there's wind!

    Kitchen sink

kitchen sink from Hoe Kee. we have very limited counter space, so the best we could do was this kinda sized sink. more depth. anyway it looks pretty nice so we're ok with it. haha.

    MBR toilet shower

master bathroom rain shower + instant heater. this was my husband's and my way of compromise - he prefers instant heater and i really wanted a rain shower. so we got this! :)

    Common toilet shower

common toilet shower + instant heater

    MBR basin

master bathroom basin. we are building a vanity top with a kompacplus surface. so this will sit on top.

    Common vanity

common toilet vanity top - readymade from Hoe Kee. $380.

    Bidet

bidets, 2 pieces - from Wasser. it was about $28 each i think. forgot!

    Taps

cold taps! we bought 2 pieces for the 2 toilets. also from Wasser. about $54 each.

    Toilet bowl

the toilet bowl, thanks to Lazyfatcat007!!! $220 each, inclusive of gst and delivery.
we bought some other small stuff too, like shower baskets and towel racks. i didn't get photos of them. but overall, we were impressed with Wasser's reasonable prices. Hoe Kee was decent too. we did check out the other players in the market before eventually deciding on these 2, and these 2 definitely trump in terms of variety and price.

  9. hello everyone! so the reno has finally begun. yesterday was Day 1 - hacking. last night the husband and i went to take a look and they're already halfway thru hacking - kitchen cabinets are gone, all toilet fittings gone and half the tiles are gone. here are the original photos so you can compare 'before' and 'after' eventually:

    Master room toilet

    master bathroom

    Common toilet

    common bathroom

    Kitchen

    kitchen

we also got loads of things done yesterday - finally finished buying all the fittings and accessories for the kitchen and 2 toilets! thank you SO much Lazyfatcat007 for your Wasser Bath recommendation. their prices are REALLY competitive, and we ended up removing some items from Hoe Kee cos the price was just much better at Wasser. Next post will have details of what we finally bought. Exciting times!

  10. If your existing door is already fire-rated, how about re-laminate it to save the cost? I did that to my main door and gotten the carpenter to 'scrap away' the design to make it into a smooth layered door.

that's not a bad idea! i think it's already fire-rated - original BTO door from 2002. how to relaminate? i don't want to ask my contractor now cos we plan to do it a few mths down the line after we've saved up money once again... can just contact any carpenter or door specialist i guess?

  11. The aircon blower unit can be installed at any height. There is no restriction. However, because the water discharge pipe needs to be lower than the unit and the pipe needs to slope towards the discharge outlet, the higher the blower, the easier to install. Otherwise, you may have an ugly pipe running right across your wall. The best way to explain this is to look at the installation in my room.

If I install my unit any lower, the discharge pipe will be lower than my window top. So I had to install my unit higher.

My unit had to "eat" into the false ceiling to attain the required height. The other reason for the indentation is because the cover usually opens upwards, and you need space to open the cover.

For aircon, my advice is never to choose based on looks. You will regret within 3 years when the unit starts to leak water, fail to cool or behave funnily, even if it continues to look pretty. My current Mitsubishi Starmex is one of the ugliest looking, compared to my previous units, but so far it has proven to be one of the best. But I must say I am not aware of the current makes of Starmex.

Wow, thank you so much for the advice! It really helps. I think we will go for the older model of Starmex as well. The last time i checked, Gain City was out of stock for it... hopefully they've brought it back in stock. Easiest and most convenient to get it from there. thanks again!!!

  12. Hi Scarlett! For now it's even able to cool the whole expose area including the kitchen and also with the room ones on when we tested after the installation! It is quiet and hopefully remains so with good maintenance on our part!

sounds good! and yeah i love the fan too! we still haven't bought ceiling fans. but due to tight budget i guess we'll have to settle for a less fancy model :(
