  1. Hello cjred,

I love your renovation. It is tastefully done up, practical and neat.

Not easy with this hdb layout.

(are your pendent lights of incandescent light bulbs?)

    Enjoy your new premises

Thanks dexufto. yes they are incandescent and each is 40w so running my dining area is 120w :( lol

  2. very lovely and simple design...am glad i stumbled upon your blog, we have the same time of pendant lighting and I finally get to see it it action!

Do you have any pictures of the 2 pendant lights in the bedroom?

I'll post the other configuration in the other room. It's "TIED" creatively on the wall hehe.

  3. Sorry to bug you, I have another question. How did the electrician install the pendant lights in your living room without running the conduit to all three bases? I'm thinking of having something similar (a bunch of pendants over the dining table) but thought that I need to run the conduit individually to each base.

    Thank you!

I told the electrcian to cheat a bit on the ceiling! Minor scoring just to fit the wires

  4. You may want to set a budget if haven't already done so, and work within it. Then allow for 10-20% cost overrun during the process itself, it will most likely happen. While it is logical to opt for quality fittings, you might want to balance the numbers against the other things you'd have to purchase.

Realistically speaking, you don't need renovation. All you need to do is furnish what you already have, because your flat is new. If on a truly shoestring budget, actually all you need to do is buy some Ikea furniture, lamps from Lightings.com.sg, electricals from any of the large electrical shops and the place would be liveable. While it is true Ikea furniture is built cheap, because it is cheap, it will tide you over for a few years until your finances improve. An added bonus is that you can get a new look with new furniture.

Carpentry costs money (a lot of it). Avoid excessive custom carpentry unless you cannot find furniture that can do the job.

Unique costs money unless you can DIY, as you've already found out. If your workmen are not familiar with a certain design or type of construction, they have to factor in their cost of additional time, concentration, wastage of materials doing it wrong and trying again, etc, which is passed on to you.

Something you may wish to consider for your new place is to make it child friendly, if you haven't already.

Renovation is a process where a few hundred bucks here, a couple of thousand there, adds up to a fearsome amount of money when you tot up the sums.

Yah better set a budget + 20%-30% max overrun. My flat also on a budget haha! i didn't do a lot of carpentry except kitchen and wardrobes can save a leg or 2 lol. goodluck!

  5. I love the final look with furnitures. very bright n clean..... Lots of cleaning daily?

R all your bedroom doors white in the first place or you had them painted white?

Uhm.... So 9Lives CS sucks... Hem..

How much is your kitchen carpentry work?

    Heard of Hoffen kitchen ever?

I am considering of getting one.

Haha when you do white you will need to clean every other day!

Those doors where the old one i just painted them white so can save some $$$ haha!

My carpentry work is around....3k i think. the whole kitchen and 1 wardrobe

HOffen yeah.. though might be a bit expensive.

  6. Hi,

I want to do wall shelf for my living room and study. It seems to be an easy job.

I like the idea of floating wall shelf (“invisible bracket” or at least the bracket is not easily noticed).

Went to ikea, Lack shelf is great but not as hard as it is paper-stuff in side the shelf. Tend to descend after a while if used on heavy objects.

    http://www.ikea.com/sg/en/catalog/products/20186182/

Marginal wall shelf is next best but the price quite steep at $69 each.

    http://www.ikea.com/sg/en/catalog/products/90176504/

Moreover, I already have some nice wood shelf pieces left from the past, if I get Marginal, to me it will be $69 just for 2 brackets. :o

Can someone help me, where can I get those “invisible” bracket to fix my “floating” wall shelf.

    Appreciate your inputs. Thanks

you can buy the holders in IKEA then buy the wood planks at homefix. They are stronger and lasting.

If you have the budget go for the elfa system also.

  7. It's a skill you know, just like how only the prata man can make roti prata. Really not easy. I saw the two guys plastering my house last time and they do nothing but plastering only. If you ask me to do it, I think I'll end up with sore arms and stiff neck :D My medical bill might be more expensive than getting the proper guys to do it! Plus you need to use both arms otherwise dunno how long you'll end up taking to finish the job....

Yah for a small scale plastering like holes and some cracks, can be done by self. but the whole house or 1 room, call the proper guys here.
