  1. Hello All,

It has been more than 8 months since we moved in to our home @ Strathmore.

I just wanted to capture a quick update on the status, things that have went well and that haven't, some design flaws we could have done better, things that's showing some wear and tear to the age.

Quick update on things that went well:

    - Overall design and workmanship of ID.

    - Bright look and feel of the home. (we really like the brightness in our homes as we believe that is good feng shui)

    - Color schemes we have chosen including the laminates.

    - Living room one full wall flush carpentry for Storage is a great hit. Thanks to it, we have lots of storage.

Items we could have done better:

    - Choosing of Kompactplus. One second thought, I think granite is a better option against chipping. Granite offers fool proof protection against sharp objects. I have a chipped spot in my kompactplus. Don't know how it happened. But I am sure it wouldn't have happened in Granite.

    - Choosing baron w-888: the choice has not gone well. I think the flush is too weak and doesn't flush away waste in single flush.

  2. Hi Aluka,

I'm new and i came across this thread and thus came across your post!

i hardly see people recommending their IDs. Met some of my friends and i would say 1 out of 5 recommend their ID to me. Will you be kind enough to share with me? :notti:

    Hi Friend,

    Thank you for your observation.

I am glad I chose this ID; It has been more than a month since we moved to my new home. There are few rectification works that needed to be done; my ID has been more than happy to settle these things for me. Whereas I have heard from some of my friends, that ID's after completing the work and handing over the flat, never turn back to fix the issues that prop-up later on. My ID never ran away from difficult situations and continue to help me sort out issues that were not even directly related to his workmanship.

The more I reflect on the work done and the rectification works undertaken by my ID, I am even more convinced that I dealt with the right ID.

I will PM you my ID contact.

    Good luck.

  3. U have moved in already? Hehe

Want check with u...I realise the wall for toilets are not solid concrete walls. My ID told me hdb used cement board which has a hollow feel when we knock on it. It will be damaged once we hack the toilet tiles.

Did u encounter this issue earlier?

    Hi Kwoni,

Sorry, looks like I missed your above post.

Yes, we have moved in already.

As far as the toilets are concerned, yes it was a funny feeling I got when I first knocked on it. an empty hoollllllllloooooow sound - I was little scared for sometime. When the hackers completed the job, I could see the cardboard and some metal sheets kind of thing. Not very confidence inspiring.

In fact when we took possession of the house, the top of the toilet wall was bending over due to the weight of the tiles; it is so flimsy. :curse:

One of the ID's who they saw my place said he cannot hack in toilet - only overlay. But how to overlay when tiles are almost falling off???? Fortunately my ID was clear from the begining that we need to hack and rebuild the walls.

What to do? Our HDB has brilliant designers who know how to cut cost!!!

  4. Hi Aluka

Can show pictures of how you place the rear speakers of the 5.1 speaker system?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Can you please refer to my post # 105. I have drawn the speaker placements in a diagram there.

But my speaker placement is not ideal. I changed from typical 5.1 for 5.2 dolby atmos with ceiling speakers because I went for a Dolby Atmos system; so I thought I might as well add a set of ceiling speakers to see if it is really worth it :notti: .

I pushed back the rear speaker placements, because I don't have space to keep it on the side of the sitting position which is the recommended position from manufacture. Infact, this position works only if you a dedicated AV room. For most places, the manufacturer recommendation won't work for practical reasons.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

For proper setup, please refer to the below link explaining how to setup 5.1:

  5. hi aluka, got ur message. thks.

another question, did ur reno include plastering for the whole house? one of the quote I recieved include this and it cost abt $2.5K. wondering what is it for and the main purpose for it. to ensure the paint stays better?

I think this is for units where the state of walls are not in good condition. Main purpose of plastering the whole house is to have a smooth and consistent finish to the wall, so that any unevenness is removed. Since mine is a relatively new construction (2006), the condition was okay; so don't need to re-plaster the whole house. Just touch-up where ever there we bumps and troughs..

  6. Cool. Welcome to Strathmore neighbour!

Now slowly I see a Strathmore group forming.

Looks like Strathmore is getting busier and busier with new owners doing renovations.

When I started my reno in Sept, there were 2 renovations starting in the same block as mine. One was in 21st floor and another I guess was 11th floor. Yesterday, I noticed a new renovation has started in 12th floor.

Hopefully, we see them joining Renotalk user group and posting their updates. Just curious to know new neighbours and hear from them their experiences.
