  1. Like I said again, if you have something to contribute, do share amongst us here instead of nitpicking at my BIAS choices. And as such, I dont shove it down their throats insisting they should get such & such brands. Im just sharing base on what Ive experienced. If youre inclined to spread the good word about KEF or Focal for that matter, do share more instead of just spouting brand names. And do thank your 3 buddies for having the same conclusion. Im not upset nor do I need your validations. This forum is about sharing. Btw, the wager is still on. Violence are best left to ah bengs. We're civilized people here. cheers
  2. On another note, I have 2 subs now - Velodyne Minivee & the SVS PB12. Unless there's other subs which can outperform these 2 brands, kindly let us know. I may be BIAS as IMHO, these 2 brands are probably the best subs in the world currently within a manageable budget. Omegared, I would like to know what kind of set up you have? Cheers
  3. I have no idea how you arrive at this conclusion. Before i make any recommendations I always ask the would-be HTS buyer for their BUDGET. And as to "leading" buyers to brands I prefer, that is your own opinion. Every HTS buyers are sophiscated & caveat emptor must be observed. And I always tell the buyers to decide with their ears, irrespect of my various recommendations, & stay within their budget. Yes, I do admit i have owned Def Tech. I've also owned Tannoy revo, MA, to name a few before settling down to the superb B&W800 diamond. Now, if you can find anywhere in this forum that Ive "lead" any buyers to go for the 800 diamond, I'll wager some money with you. PS3 performance is strictly my opinion. Its up to individual to decide for themselves. PS3 has issue playing certain movies thus I rendered it unsuitable as compared to a dedicated BR player. Not everyone can afford OPPO, that is a fact. Since one is into hi-fi, be ready to spend or else get those off the shelf cheaper BR player. Vid quality arent guaranteed though. OPPO has its limitation as well. Its not a good CD transport until it came out with a SE series. Im using a Cyrus CD 8 SE & do you see me pushing this brand to forummers here? I recommend HTS set up based on forummers budgets. I dont manage their expectations. Its entirely their own. Hope that settles whatever misconception you have of my own bias-ness. If you must, do help by recommending HTS set up to forummers here. cheers
  4. Some "folklore" monster stories Ive heard about people who normally dont own plasmas is that plasma TVs are so hot that it can fry an egg!!!! Have to reinforce this statement again, if one is thinking of PUB savings go for LED. The purists will choose plasma over its obvious pix quality. cheers
  5. Hahah. Well noted. My missus has no say in my decision to get a HTS as Im paying for it and she's not In the beginning she did protest with all the ugly looking equipments, but when we had a house warming, all her gf's with their respective other halves were well impressed with the audio/video quality of my AV equipment. Much so that I was "requested" to help/advice them set up a proper HTS at their place. And HTS is what its all about. Sonically sweet sound & crisp clear image. Wife & me never stepped into the cinema since. So all's well that ends well. Cheers
  6. Ive said this a million times so plus 1 more time, again. One cannot compromise WAF with quality. No point paying so much for a PV-1 when a cheaper Velodyne will do the job. Btw, the velodyne has a good WAF, it comes with a remote control & has more devices to play with to get the sweet spot. Its absolutely brilliant! Yes, the 708 has multi EQ calibration as compared to the 608. On a serious note, CM series is reserved for audiophilers & wont be appropriate for movie watching. The 600 or 800 series would be a perfect balance. cheers
  7. PS3? Errr....No. Not a good choice. PS3 for gaming is good but not for movie watching. Cheers
  8. Not really. Are you investing in a bluray player? If it is, either you get a good BR player (eg OPPO83) or a good amp with good video upscaling eg Onkyo 708 & above. For such a big screen, watching DVDs is crap quality according to my own eyes. Cheers
  9. What abt the yamaha 1065? Your B&W will serve u real well. Though I would suggest you change your sub. B&W subs craps big time except the PV1. Cheers
  10. Hi Congrats for taking the 1st step to set up a REAL HTS. Tannoy = good & highly recommended. Since your TV only supports HDMI1.3 no point getting the Onkyo 508. Either the Yamaha 600 series or an Onlyo 507 will suffice. Dont consider jamo or Boston. For your budget, audition the Definitive Technology Pro Cinema series. You may be surprised. Cheers
  11. Hi Congrats. B&W is awesome speakers. My question, why Onkyo 708? Next, though Im very impressed with the PV-1 sub, its rather overpriced. A velodyne or Paradigm sub would suffice without any quality degarde & its much cheaper. But thats my opinion. The MT25/30 are using basically M1 speakers. I would recommend the 600 series to have a more fuller audio. But if u like sat speakers, then enjoy them. cheers
  12. Any louder the soundbar will emit noise. I have made extensive postings on the inefficiencies of a soundbar. Look it up. cheers
  13. B&W showroom @ TheExperts. Shop at Lavender St next to Imminient Plaza. Do tryout the B&W 600 series & if you have better budget, try the 800 series. Or alternatively, audition Monitor Audio & Tannoy speakers. Both at Adelphin though I cant remember which shop. cheers
  14. I cant help laughing at some advices given though its no fault of yours. A 7.1 system is good & handy if you really want to have 7 speakers & blow away your neighbors. But wait a minute, there arent many movies in 7.1 format. Same goes for those who buy 3D TV. So dont just "follow" the latest trend unless you know what you want. As I mentioned earlier, a 5.1 HTS is good enough. Yes, the 708 receiver is good if you have time to fine tune the sub for every single movie to find the sweet spot. But then again the 608 would be sufficient if one arent too fussy. And to really make your HTS work, go HD by getting into Bluray. The 608 is able to decode the highest audio & video performance for your enjoyment. Cheers
  15. Avoid going to Harvey, Courts or best Denki is u want to purchase your 1st HTS. Try Adelphi as there's more shops that specialises in these products. Most importantly, be comfortable with a specific budget. For starters, a 5.1 system would suffice. And yes, the above combination of HTS would be ideal. Do go for an audition to have a proper feel & this may help a lot in your HTS selection. cheers
  16. Compare apple to apple. AV1 has a good acoustic enclosure just like his neighbor Atlas Hi-fi. Put MT-2 in the open, the quality deteriotes immediately. MT-2 is a 6 Ohm speaker & its power handling is only 80W. Plus point is that u dont need a high end receiver eg Onkyo 708 upwards or the Yamaha RV series. Bad point is at 80W how much further can you go? Too loud volume will distort the speaker. Have u tried B&W yet? Cheers
  17. I tink this Rosman chap is trying to pull a fast one. There's no such thing as a 4.1 HTS system. Ive also done u a favor by checking out this model though I would advise against, its suppose to be a 5.1 set. meaning it shld consist of 5 speakers, 1 subwoofer & 1 receiver. Do take note Jamo sub is crappy so my advise is to stick to the Onkyo sub. At all cost, avoid buying a HTS from best denki or Courts or HN. cheers
  18. Just google lah. Loads of info. Anyway, TV placement is own preference. Different strokes for different folks. Here's a sample website below for suggested TV placement. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-GXJQmxbGvyo/l..._placement.html cheers
  19. OPPO93 launch probably Dec 2010. Dont expect prices to be cheap. My best estimates around $900. But its **** sleek. cheers
  20. Hi Pioneer or Panasonic are good choices. Ensure that the panels are made in Japan. On a separate note, the movies recommended above for visual comparison are in Bluray format not DVD. If someone comes & tell me that there's still no big diff, i can safely say theyre lying. We (some forummers at xtremeplace) have done a vidshoot test comparing LCD, LED & plasma. Plasma still tops. We're talking about pix quality not of PUB savings. If one want PUB savings, might as well go for CRTs. Those who are using projectors are burning an even bigger hole in their pocket but in terms of cinematic effect, theyre probably the best for visual experience. cheers
  21. Bro Dune is a good & cheap choice. Why dont u get the Dune Pro or HD Max? Dune Prime codecs dont have HD audio format. Both Pro & HD max can act as a very good CD transport as well. cheers
  22. 4 speakers only????? What happened to the center speaker? cheers
  23. Let me recommend a few movies where the dark details between plasma & LED are so obvious. 1) Wolfman 2) Sherlock Holmes 3) Pitch black/ Riddick 4) Man on Fire 5) Predator 1 & 2 6) AVP 1 & 2 7) Master & Commander 8) Independence Day Not many people have the luxury of watching TVs 8 hrs per day everyday unless one is not working. But then again, Im one of few who can afford to pay more for obvious better pix quality. Most of the forummers at xtremeplace confess plasma TVs are much better. But to each its own. If one thinks BOSE are superb, all the best then cheers
  24. Visit Audio Iconic. Adelphi basement. Cant remember exact address. Look for Patrick. Price 999,00. experience - priceless. cheers
  25. Hi What kind of advice are you looking for as youve already bought your HTS? 1st 100 hrs run in means you just play your equipment on a normal/daily basis say eg 2-3 hrs/day. After the 100hr mark, you'll notice some difference in the audio output. It tends to be more fuller. If youve come to this forum earlier, I would have advise u AGAINST getting any HTS from Courts. Good thing u didnt get the 1.4 HDMI cable as your Onkyo 607 is only a certified HDMI 1.3a receiver. These salesmen have zero product knowledge. Overall for the money you paid, Onkyo speakers are not renowned sonically. Jamo sub would be a strange combination. I wonder why. hope this info helps. cheers
