  1. The tile cut-out in the common bath looks super duper strange and different from the ones in the master bathroom... The explanation was that the surrounding gradient of the flooring would cause water pooling so additional cuts were made to create a slope for water to drain off...

The tiler placed the spirit level and the surrounding tiles while showing me.... the explanation was sound and it actually is more work to do it this way but I've never seen tiling like this before.

This is under the sink so still okay.

Wah!!! This one I lagi cannot accept. Need to fix this one even if it means orchard road ponding.

  2. Here's my Peranakan Door Way.

HDB made the new flats wheelchair friendly. I made it wheel chair unfriendly as i didn't want water/dust being easily swept in... Created a 50mm drop by having a vertical tiled step. Feels great to be greeted by these patterns whenever you open the wooden door or from the other side when you come home and open the main gate.

These tiles are pricey though... ~$60 bucks for 6 pieces from Hafary.

Need to whiten the HDB tile grout lines after the reno is complete... Any non(or less) toxic chemical to recommend?

  3. Countertop up as well as kitchen cabinet door knobs installed. Upper row Drawer handles not yet installed.

My Bling Bling countertop. It has some kind of jewel like sparkle to it which the phone camera was not able to capture. From far it looks like a black polished granite top.

The original position of the hob I initially designed it to be vertically positioned. Then dorothy pointed out that I will have a problem with cooking with a larger diameter Wok/pan as it would interfere with the wall.... looking back at my design, yeah I didnt cater space for that. Obviously i don't cook. :P .. but on the side of practicality, it was switched around to be horizontally positioned. The immediate picture here isn't really correct, the hob should be rotated180degs, I made sure my larger wok has sufficient space. The next close up picture is the correct position..

Correct position for Hob with larger diameter position at the outside edge of the countertop.

A close up of the sink area. Manage to capture the blueish purplish sparkle on the bottom right of the image. So... you can only see sparkle on the phone when it is out of focus... Super bling. :sport-smiley-004::sport-smiley-004::sport-smiley-004: Almost went for black galaxy granite, no regrets with this choice.

  4. Does that have a gloss look? Can't see clearly on mobile.

Was thinking of using the Nippon borduex(spelling?) paint used for wood skirting. Yeah I'm concerned on streaking too. As my skirting had streaks even when done by painters!

  5. are your cabinet doors spray painted? Was it difficult?

I'm looking to have some of mine sprayed as some of the off the ikea wood panels didn't come out as I envisioned so I Intend to spray them glossy white.

  6. This post is on Countertop choices.

Initially i wanted black galaxy granite. So I paid a visit to Lian Hin and brought a drawer front to match color to it. I found some not so commonly used granite such as emerald pearl and Blue pearl which also looks quite nice.

    gallery_71361_7_17961.jpg

    Some close ups

Black Galaxy Granite - Does not look as fantastic as the big slab in SBH showroom which has deep glossy black with large gold flecks. unfortunately SBH's granite only sell in big slab so there is large wastage... so i decided to drop this.

    gallery_71361_7_2458.jpg

Took a look at the other granites.

Emerald Pearl Granite.. Pearl reflections very nice if you have spotlight to shine on it (I do! :sport-smiley-004: ) Does not look so nice without lights.

Blue Pearl Granite under cool and warm lighting.

Was deciding between these 2 until I went to browse at quartz range. Actually to me I still prefer granite  as it is more natural but my commanding officer saw it(Ocean) and :dribble::wub: . Seriously the one on the wall looks real good, but the Ocean sample on the table does not look as good. Huge difference here so I'm concerned on consistency. Lian Hin staff told me it may not always look like the one on the wall and different batches may had a different look which they have no control over...

Anyway with these in mind i spoke to Dorothy and told her i'm considering black galaxy(but not Lian Hin's one as i need something with more gold specs and also like Lian Hin's Ocean Quartz). She found a supplier for granite called Bellus which I found their sample for black galaxy granite to be close to what I wanted but eventually as to accommodate the wishes of my CO, in the end I selected Ocean Quartz. I highlighted the quality consistency concern and she went and got me larger sample cut from the same batch to see if that is what i wanted, and if i were to make an order it would be from that batch. Cost is somewhat higher than granite but she also absorbed the difference. :good:

here's how it looked like against my kitchen wall tile. It had those blueish purplish specks in it which hopefully will match my glass backsplash color. Really nice if you have warm lighting.

My backsplash color that I selected. Can you guys see what color is this? On my laptop it looks blue, on Iphone it looks purple. Hopefully it dont turn out too obiang.

  7. Kitchen cabinets works.

With solid plywood carcass customed to ikea door/drawer fronts. Its the first time the carpenter is doing this. They were initially quite worried at first but so far it turns out quite okay... so far. Drawers tracks are from maximera range which is actually Blum tandembox plus. So its full blum tracks, hinges/dampers.

I intend to run cove lighting at the top of the cabinet, so the top gap filler is taller and also recessed. the LED strip will be hidden by the upper cornice.

The bottom cornice color is abit different compared to the rest. Seems to look whiter compared to the doors. Will get this switched out.

  8. +1 on ikea kitchen. Do note the butcher style blocks are wood. I don't think the acrylic ones have wood design.

There are 2 types. 1 is solid wood the other has solid veneers. Anyway their tops are cheap. So don't need to care much about longevity. You can change them once every 1-2 years for 10yrs to be the same cost as granite/quartz.

Ikea cabinets needs to be installed on flat walls. If there are pipes you'll have a problem. i wanted ikea look so much that I did cabinets customed to ikea door fronts.

  9. Carpentry update

    1. My mini WIW in the works. Yes, unlike popular color PVC im using white. It is budget and will match my laminate which is also white.

There is a gap at the right side due to the aircon trunking. Lesson learnt. It has been smooth sailing so far since the initial screw up by HDB where i have no power/water during start reno. With this happening I can confirm Screw ups are inevitable! and it is advisable to do your Aircon piping/trunking first before any other measurements are taken. Initially the carpenter wanted to just fill that gap up with laminate. Luckily the carpenter was accommodative to my request to make use of the space to add a vertical pull out drawer for hanging belts, ties and scarfs.

    med_gallery_71361_7_86526.jpg

The view of the left side. There are spaces on the left of the drawers meant for the bulky hinges. I'm doing casement doors.

    med_gallery_71361_7_79777.jpg

The kids room cabinet cum bookshelf. I designed this one... It will be outfitted to ikea door fronts later.

    gallery_71361_7_33355.jpg

2x T5s 4K for general mood light. and 3x 2.7K color temperature Spot lights in the Main bath, the spot lights 2 are 400lumen, 1 aimed at toilet bowl for some newspaper/facebooking at the toilet bowl, 1 points at shower. the Middle one is 200lumen just shines down on entrance. There is still a vanity light which as not been installed yet as can be seen by the dangling wire. TheXmas feature column wall looks real good now with warm lighting.

    sml_gallery_71361_7_41005.jpg    sml_gallery_71361_7_66554.jpg

Track lights with 4x 7W 2.7K color temp spot lights. Seems to be quite big for this space... (sh!t i ordered double somemore now i will have 8 pieces to let go) After the cabinets are up will need to consider if i should change. I ordered the smaller 3W version too.

  11. Regarding staircase lights, depending on how the stairs is constructed you may like check out led strip lights lined under each flight of stairs. Something like cove light.

Google "cove lights under stairs" under images and you'll see what I'm referring to. If that is overwhelming than you could also consider just running the strip under the whole stretch of handrail
