  1. Bro, which wooden countertop are you referring to?

    Hehe.. ok, do you mean

    a) $15k for all other things EXCEPT carpentry; or

    b) $15k for ALL things including carpentry?

    Huge difference wor...

As you may already know, carpentry alone makes up a huge chunk of any renovation budget. A full everything is going to cost you over $10k liao. Assuming you need 5 main wardrobes/cabinets/console, that's already $7k. Then the small things like side cabinets la, shoe cabinet la, bathroom cabinet la, shelves etc maybe another $2k. And the killer item, i.e. kitchen cabinets from my surveys would cost $3-6k (indeed the standard deviation amongst companies is high! if you are lucky you can find the lower end...but if not, you may just end up with the median).

So that leaves very little from your $15k budget to get furniture... :( Unless you don't mind buying those really entry-level stuff like from 42 or non-branded places. They are ok for a couple of years, but not for like 10yrs la.

Anyway. Just a little tip on kitchen cabinet... I found that IKEA actually has very extremely affordable options if you're looking for just simple stuff. I'm not even talking about their customised cabinets and tabletops (never tried), but just those normal off the rack kind. I saw some serious quality wooden countertop tables for like $200+! And I know it's good quality because I have this silly habit of banging on the IKEA things when I'm looking at them. Like, banging hard with my fists. If it sounds hollow and feels flimsy, I move on until I find a solid one.. :P So there are some that really pass the banging test.

Having said that, who am I to advise you on budget...! When I've just spent over $8k on one stupid toilet... :(

    Happy renovating!

  2. Cotto brand, you can check out the thai website and look for the distributors I think. Haven't checked the website but I know there's a few shops carrying cotto brand in malaysia. Singapore I don't know as I have yet to come across the brand in sg.

I don't care about the brand. I care about budget, and water saving factors more.

Craft bricks is cheaper in malaysia definitely but transport + customs tax I don't know. Need to self arrange as no delivery direct to sg. But if anyone wants to order them, best is to do it before April when GST kicks in.

Hahaa.. Wah, I had read about this Thai-made Toto but I didn't know they called it a different name. Hmmm.. but original or not? How to tell?

Actually compared to other reno stuff, I don't really know very much about WCs. So if the U-U person had sold me fake stuff also perhaps I wouldn't have known.

Craft bricks cheaper there?? Wow it better be like 25% of the SG prices, and if you are buying more than 10 boxes, to make that trip worthwhile..! :sport-smiley-003:

  3. I don't keep track of renotalk stuff alot. Only read here and there.

Actually, Not only roca stuff, there's also like toto brand and it's joint brand with a thai co, cotto brand in JB.

I recall a forumer brought back his craft bricks from JB so I reckon, tiles can be brought back too if there's some transport.

Seriously, had I known...I might have gone to take a look :(

Oh well. Things happen for a reason... But thanks for sharing this info! :good: Next time I will know better..

  4. Ah, well there's always the option to drive to JB and bring one of them back. There's like a big showroom in Bukit Indah or Johor Jaya if I'm not mistaken cos I think I saw them when I went into JB, :bleah:

    Hi BunBun,

Yes Roca does have an 'official' list of distributors in Sg... which is like 2, Carrera and Interior Affairs. However, they are only limited to the 'prestigious companies' that are the official POS appointed by Roca. So, for instance, SSC which is not listed on Roca's website. They actually carry quite a wide range at the Changi branch (they are like the parallel importer I think?) but maybe Roca doesn't even know they exist :D

You are right in saying that the smaller distributors will give a more reasonable price (that's why I was looking in Jalan Besar type of shops lol)... unfortunately for Roca, they themselves do not deal with these 'small companies'. So I guess whatever stock that these small guys have is they bring in themselves. Which explains the mostly outdated models I guess?

I have actually had the same problem buying paint before. I went to Jotun Sg's website to find my nearest distributor that sells that particular (industrial type) boat paint, but they didn't have anything conclusive. When I called up Jotun and they sent me a whole list of distributors, I found out upon calling each shop that...the list was not updated at all. Some shops had already closed down, some the numbers were not working anymore and then 1 shop even told me "Haiyah why they always tell people to call us, we don't carry Jotun anymore!" Errr...

  5. About your toilet search for roca WC.. I'm really curious.... Why didn't you check with roca singapore and ask them for a show branch address in singapore if they have any? If not, you could ask whether there is any distributor that carries their brand. Because frankly, distributors especially the small shops will try to give reasonable pricing if you are really a serious buyer.

Most of us have to do alot of digging and comparing results on the shops and of course the right direction to go for the sales.

  6. My understanding on the amp rating for cooking hobs goes like this....

Induction Hob can range from 15-30A depending on the wattage range. your induction hob is in. Eg, Total power of cooking hob is 7000W or 7kW which requires a 30A rating & the cooking zones on the hob will have different kW. (You can read the specifications for the model you are interested in)

This is why for induction & vitroceramic hobs, you can't fully utilize ALL cooking zones to the max because you will be pushing the amp rating further. Usually for 30cm hob, you can use only 1 cooking zone while for a 60cm hob, I think max is 2 or 3 cooking zone at the same time.

Different models will have certain limits for the max number of cooking zones you can use at the same time, so be sure to check with the shop or manufacturer for clarification regarding the usage in HDB.

I'm using a vitroceramic hob, 30cm by the way and have been using only 1 cooking zone to cook at a time because I was told this by the salesperson when I bought my hob last time

Aircon amp rating is 15-20A. For aircon power affecting the amp rating, I'm not sure but I do know the amp rating is in that range.

So combine with the usage of both cooking hob and aircon at the same time, your amp rating will have been exceeded by then. Probably a power trip or fuse blown as a result.

I was told by my contractor despite having a 40 amp rating; If I have an induction hob (easily 15-30amp), I cannot switch both the aircon and the hob on at same time.

    si mi logic???!?

So housewarming, if I need to on my aircon in the living areas, I cannot cook lor, jialat lolxx

  7. I thought the mixer tap is usually installed slightly above the tub, kinda like the standard ones besides having a shower hose used in hotels? For this bathtub at APA hotel that I mentioned, the tap is shared between the wash basin and bathtub. The tap as you can see has a long spout and movable that you can swivel left and right to use above the tub or at the basin.

Bun Bun - your photo reminded me of my wife and my horror of installing bathtubs in HDB units - The Mixer!

    Dainty flair please take note:

Because you cannot hack BTO toilets or want to waste money digging out the pipes to adjust the height - The mixer will have to pour from a height of 1m? Maciam waterfall blasting down. We we are used to it now since there is no choice. Bear in the find the choice mixer should allow the flow to hit into the bathtub (not the sides) properly - else lots of splashes!

  8. You've mentioned your wife is a Japanese earlier in your thread. I can see she has incorporated her style in the home interior design. I like this because it has a soothing feel.

If you have lace curtains with or without patterns hanging on the mild steel partition, it will be a softer and reminiscent feel of 80s vintage style.

About bathtub, the smallest bathtub in a hotel I've seen is at the APA hotel in Hiroshima! But really cute design as it is in the shape of a egg

Show you a picture of their bathtub here. The tap is shared between the tub and wash basin as you can see & sitting in it will remind you of the olden days in japan where people bathed in a wooden circular tub?

    15389262.jpg

You are right. But my wife is Japanese so get the comment my house is a Muji Japanese childcare center because of the partition door and her choice of soft furnishings/cutlery/cooking.

    Wife said not Muji.
    Maybe Sarasa?

    http://www.rakuten.ne.jp/gold/sarasa-designstore/

Now is good time to go Japan. The Yen will fall further this month.

Will be almost $1 = 100 Yen unlike that days I chased my wife was $1.70 = 100 Yen.

    Life is unfair, huh.

    Tip:
Joseph Joseph is less than half price in Japan if housewives out there want to shop in japan. Just buy from Rakuten and ship to your hotel.

30% of Robinsons' prices to be exact. Local dept stores are a rip off. Just don't buy high wattage electronics (ovens/grills) as even with transformers, the stuff I brought over do not work at 100%.

  9. Your home makeover gives me the feeling of a slightly distinct japanese style except that if your home had those japanese shoji sliding doors instead of the mild steel partition, it will definitely be more pronounced in the modern-japanese style.

Muji doesn't even come close to describing your house style considering that Muji gives me the feeling of a low cost 'thrift' store ambiance

  10. If you notice that in Japan, the streets are really clean! During my stay in japan last time, I couldn't even see any rubbish litter on the streets. Even there are no rubbish outside of the bins unlike

how the rubbish is strewn around the bins in HDB void decks & surroundings when the bins are full. I discovered that the japanese are extremely FIT because their train exits are via 2-3 stories of staircases as well.

There are those who stay in apartments and recycling is done manually on designated days because if one misses the time to throw out the garbage, the garbage will have to stay with him until the next time.

Frankly, the values of being clean, organized and clutter free is pretty much doctrined in japanese people that they clean up after them which I think is not bad because it teaches youngsters the same value and the youngsters also see their seniors walk the talk too.

When I stayed at a few days in a motel in Yokohama, Japan, the innkeeper gave me an A4 piece of paper with detailed instructions and told me to study it carefully. The instructions were so detailed to the point of being ridiculous.

    15255974583_c668e99453_o.jpg

Every morning before the designated time, you had to bring the specified type of recyclables to the recycling point. You could not cheat because the items had to be in clear transparent plastic bags and the recycling point was visible to everyone. It was really too difficult for visitors like me.

  11. I would use it if I can but I currently have 2 blenders and not enough countertop space for the juicer.

Only option to sell it.. Or else wasted since brand new!

    [back to Table of Contents]

I think you should use it. Some of my electrical items do not work after a long time of non-use.

The slow juicer can also make purée. It makes fruit juices with much less wastage as compared to normal juicer. You can adjust according to how much pulp you want in the juice.

  12. Hello,

I need a quote for the following for a small kitchen work.

    1. Removing existing bottom 13ft kitchen cabinets and solid surface top.

    2. Build bottom 11ft kitchen concrete counter top with tiles and doors

    3. Re-use back existing cooking hob , sink and tap?

    Can advise?

  13. You're welcome.

The dummy face plate is called blank switch cover.

    http://www.meteorelectrical.com/images/1-gang-blank-cover-plate.jpg

Saw this in my B.F.'s place where the common toilet is small and not suitable for a bathroom. Their wireman still install a water heater 1 gang switch and the blank switch cover to hide the wires for a 'future' water heater in the future if my B.F. decides to install one next time

  14. Nice. I won the Kuvings juicer a few months back in a lucky draw but it's sitting in the storeroom at the moment because I'm using a blender & processor in 1 which can be used to puree, make fruit juices or make hot drinks according to my mother.

So I haven't had the chance to use it and I think it will be a white elephant for a while unless mine breaks down or I sell it?

I read the Kuvings brochure that came with it actually, and it says it has 10 years warranty though.

  15. Like i said before, my purchase was nearly 7 years ago. So I don't know whether the quality has improved or not for the philips vacuum cleaners.

    Hi Bunbun!

Wow I am glad I didn't buy the bagless unit then! Actually I selected the unit with bags because I read reviews that removing the dust from the v/c would be very dusty. Since we both have sensitive noses, I thought the bagged ones would be better! -fingers crossed-

As for the ceiling fan, well, we are both rather afraid of the heat. I am aware that a ceiling fan works extremely well with the aircon, but we have been using a standing fan after switching off the aircon and it works for us too. Furthermore, we reasoned that since we are not doing a false ceiling, it would not be too much of an hassle should we change our minds later to install a ceiling fan!

  16. Won't this one be easily be remedied now since they are doing reno at the moment.

They could ask their wireman to add a new set of wire for fan and cover it up with a dummy faceplate so that the next time they want to install a ceiling fan, all they need is to install the ceiling fan, unscrew the dummy faceplate and replace with a fan switch?

Some advise on the ceiling fan installation. Although the post-reno installation might look fuss free, it might not be so.

If you only decide to install a ceiling fan post-reno, the electrical wiring will be exposed and will not be aesthetically pleasing. And if you choose to conceal the wiring, the place will get messy from the debris. Also the question of where the electrician will tap the fan wiring from will determine how much mess is created. And if you prefer to have fan switch on the wall, it might affect the orientation of your switches and you might have to buy suitable ones to accommodate your new configuration. Not forgetting touchup painting to follow which is likely diy. It takes lots of energy+time to do an effective post-reno cleanup and you really wouldn't want to subject yourself to another round of cleaning even though it's on a smaller scale.

  17. Cool!

About Point 9 and Point 11 of your purchase list...

Point 9. Philips sucks for their vacuum cleaner in my own view but I don't know how the quality is now considering I bought my philip bag less vacuum cleaner over nearly 7 years ago.

Barely 3-6 months after the purchase of the vacuum cleaner, it KO-ed and was working fine after sending it for repair under warranty. It KO-ed again after a month or two. Needless to say, I ditched the vacuum cleaner after it KO-ed 3rd time,

for a cheap vacuum cleaner which worked better than philips. It's still at my place to date and working fine now.

Point 11. I'm wondering how your hubby comes up with the ceiling fan circulation reasoning? A ceiling fan can cool the room by circulating the air only, not cooling the air. However, the fan circulation ability will depend on the size of the fan and the room size.

It also helps that if you have air-con in the MBR and the temperature is set for 25-26 deg with programable function to turn off the air con after a while, the fan will help distribute the cool air even more. You can tell the difference immediately & plus,

you save a lot on electricity bill because the lower the air-con temperature, the more energy needed to bring the air to the required temperature. This is especially true in hot weather during the day time as well.

Also standing fans need to unscrew first before you can clean the blades. This is also annoying as you need to do it every few months when the cow webs appears and air circulation is not as fast as before..

  18. I was hoping to avoid this because like some of the forumers here, the chinese is really bad! Even using google translation isn't 100% accurate. :help:

Actually I was looking for this or either some nice vinyl stickers to stick in the bathrooms because the cut out holes for the exposed pipes (the exposed pipes are sealed with cap and not connected to anything), aren't prettily done. So want to cover these holes up .

You got to ask the vendor for it

  19. Hi greglhc,

Great to hear that about the turf. Will consider to get the turf. Thank you! . :thumbs up:

Hi bianzi, it's from overture. Similar types can found in other shops such as far east flora

Hi BunBun, the turf is meant for outdoor purposes, though you need to have the drainage cells below. I have used it outdoors, exposed to full sun and rain. No issues.

I didn't buy the rug from taobao so don't have the link anymore. Sorry!

  20. Puggy, are you referring to the leather recliner eames chair?

If yes, then we are talking about different eames models. My apologies for not catching on that as been surfing a lot of forums.

The Eames chair i am referring to is this one.

    _201288134527697.jpg

Haha I didn't look at the dimensions when I bought it, just assumed it would be ok. Think I still would've gotten it anyway!

People use the eames chair for dining chairs and work desks? I thought it was mainly used as a lounge chair since it comes with an ottoman.
