This is a good question - which made me go read up on my Samsung-5120 manual. So, it detects the *internal* temperature and if it is above 55 deg Celsius, it will sound the door alarm for 15 secs before automatically opening the lock. I won't be able to test for sure how fast an external fire source will raise the sensor (on the internal side) - and I hope the intruder won't get to try; I think it is easier and quieter to use a door wrench.

I think Gateman F10 and F100 has a more 'up market' look to it (compared to Samsung's) . Towards better AND lower cost of living .

Samsung or Gateman were the two brands I looked at before choosing the former (SHS-5120) because it has a physical key (when all else fails) besides the pin, and RFID card access. I would have preferred Gateman if fingerprint recognition were important. If you need to budget, $150-$600 will be the range depending on installation and warranty requirement, and choice of models/features. I guess you can start by choosing the brand (if looks and perceived quality are important to you) and then choose the access features ( fingerprint, pin, physical key), and then other features. I got mine from Desmond 9830-7788 (mentioned in this thread); he has the Gateman series as well. My relative (who stays in a strata terrace) has also bought/installed 3 units (F10 and F100's) through him. But I need emergency physical key - hence Samsung. Maybe ask around here to see if more buyers got more discount or not...

As a recent convert (to using digital door lock), yes - I can 'appreciate' the statement made above (though I would have laughed at it before actually installed one for my house). However, we had been using physical keys for the last x decades of our life - without much complaint. So, what's the 'tipping point' for this new found luxury? Simple, the price points for these brought about by the online sellers will allow me to install on all my children's rooms ... now that is too carried away (for now) - or is it? .

My mother uses two of these SHS-1210 (front and back door) in her apartment in Malaysia; trying to make it a little bit more complex for the thieves there (yeah - still not thieves proof but hey maybe they will look for traditional door lock alternatives for picking). They are priced so cheaply now on eBAY.sg (just saw it today -- only $90 USD excluding installation/postage compared to a year ago) that I would think these will be the preferred models for those with more than one door for entry (for "fail-over" ?). I had chosen SHS-5120 because my HDB has only one door (for entry) and I needed a physical key as a backup . As an aside, for my mother, the toggle (SHS-1210/1110) is good enough but the RFID card access (SHS-1320) is more convenient for those minimalist (just another card in the wallet). In practice, we use neither - the pin combination is still the most 'zen' .

This one looks like the Gateman F100 I was evaluating (before eventually choosing Samsung 5120). In the link you provided; there is a large downloaded picture -- and I spotted a "Gateman" printed on the lock; so it looks like an OEM version. If F100 is the equivalent, do an eBAY search for iRevo Gateman F100 Biometric Fingerprint Lock; that would give you an indicative range --- or just go for F100 .

Just got one (see my post above!). Yes, your are right - it has a physical key access feature for just that. Do it like me lah .... put one at place x, another one at place y (yes, two keys are in the package). Then send an email to yourself to remind you where you placed it. When bad luck happens n years later, do a search on "key" in your email box . Cheers! You use the key only in emergency of course (so it is not "If thats the case, then wouldn't it becoming the same as normal lock?" )

I am not the expert but having just installed one (Samsung SHS-5120), I think it can withstand a few indirect sprays but that is not waterproof .

Just to close off this thread. Yep. Done that -- HDB advise/solution will rip the tiles (which in my case, rip quite a lot of things). I tried XYPEX treatment on my neighbour's ceiling instead.

If you get from the right sellers, the price (without warranty) and reliability of these locks is low enough to 'just do it'. Btw, get the installation done together - you will appreciate the convenience of having the door delivered and installed with assurance before paying.

I am exploring further Xypex treatment instead of PU injection. Will advise further when I get the quotation.

Such a common problem - but hard to search for advise. Mine is a localised leak around the drainage pipe in my neighbour's ceiling below. Please advise what solutions are available: 1 - hack and re-tile (ok - want to avoid due to cost, and effort) 2 - chemical grouting / injection ( what are the pros and cons?) Pros: a) 1/2 day effort b) cost (getting a quotation from contractor soon) c) Cons: a) Warranty offered is 1 year in area of treatment b) 3 - anymore? Thanks in advance.

Thats a new term to me? Is that layering new tiles on top? We are trying to ask around how thick can the new layer be -- we wanted to run a drainage hole + pipe underneath the new layer of tiles.

Background: My 10+ year old master bedroom toilet leaks to the floor below. Leaks are observed from the floor below to be just around the (big) pipe area. We observed also that if we just use the wash basin, it is ok, so the leaks must be from the bathing area leading to the drainage hole (that stretch is covered with tiles so we can't see visually if any of the tiles popped). We did a quick - re-plaster/cement around drainage hole - but that does not work. We are now trying to assess alternatives to fixing the problem (e.g. minimal re-tiling of the floor, layer on top of existing ones to avoid extensive hacking etc.) Ask: Like to ask forumers here for toilet contractors who can help assess alternatives -- and also do a good piece of work if we have to re-do the toilet! Appreciate it!

Please do recommend reliable and good built quality brands. The varieties in the marketplace centers around two-three brands. I am not sure what functions I need but I would like to do a lot of meat/vege stews for the kinds when they come back (parents won't be home!).
