  1. In an age of staycations, having a home modelled after a holiday resort is in-trend. IUIGA has some furniture pieces that you can get for a 'staycation' look for your home. Holiday Resort It’s all about creating a space that is simple, practical, and comfortable enough to be called a sanctuary. Think soft shades of blue and green, whites, and wooden furniture. Wooden furniture gives your living room that rustic ‘home away from home’ feel while the whites, blues, and greens invoke comfort, healing, and tranquillity. While wooden furniture are more durable and easier to maintain (especially in holiday resorts frequently used by travellers), you do not have to stick with solely that; as the holiday home emphasises relaxation, you can have cushions on your sofa or opt for a padded/fabric sofa (counted your fabric sofa is properly and regularly maintained). Glossy surfaces and wide mirrors reflect sufficient natural light into your living room for an airy, open feel. Adding plants (and you can find them on IUIGA too!) may also enhance that ‘beach resort’ vibe. 2. Hello Denyr, thank you for your comment. CASE advises going for contractors with good reviews on independent third party websites. Already we have seen threads on this forum where users exchange contact details of credible, experienced contractors/interior designers with one another via PM or posting. However, it is true that some firms may open new ones under different names, and that may be only up to the right legal authorities to screen them and check their history. There are also cases in which individuals may take advantage of platforms to slander design firms. So careful discretion should be practised when sourcing for ID firms. In case you need help from CASE, they are contactable at 6 1000 315. The hotline is active Mon - Fri, 9am to 5pm.
  3. What was once considered 'old-fashioned' and 'gaudy' is now in! It's time to go retro! Fancy having a retro-styled living room? Retro Style You can accomplish the retro style by combining ‘modern’ and ‘vintage’ design elements. Just like the MCM style, the retro style started and gained popularity between the 1940s to 1970s. Go for big blocks of bold solid colours (red, yellow, orange, green, brown, etc) and exaggerated curves. MCM design traits like slim furniture legs and leather upholstery also suit this style. Weathered or worn-out carpentry or recycled wooden pallets can help amp up the vintage vibe. Loud brightly-coloured or heavily intricate patterns, prints, and pop art are also major contributors to the retro style. The more shaggy textures and colours, the better. However, do note that what makes something ‘retro’ is the amount of nostalgia it gives you - it’s about the ‘outdated’ coming back in style. So the above tips can be taken loosely; even having 1980s-styled mosaic tiles or parquet flooring in the living room may be enough for a retro look. 4. Getting your dream home may be on your bucket list and is one of many life goals in this age. However, your dream house may turn into a nightmare if something drastic happens during your renovation - despite your best efforts, something unpleasant and unexpected may arise even after your renovation ends. Your doors are warped and they are unable to close properly. Your walls are flaking and peeling in various places. Your home’s electrical wiring is either loose or does not have a flow of electrical current running through. Your plumbing is either clogged or leaking. Your floor becomes flooded because the waterproofing and piping works were not done properly. The above scenarios are just a few ways your renovation can go south, even after completion. And unfortunately, such problems are more common than one may want to believe. Case Study - Is Your Renovation Story Like This? Here is an example from real life that details such an experience. Is your renovation horror story similar to that of Mr M’s? Here is what happened to Mr M: He engaged a renovation contractor to renovate his 5-room HDB apartment. The package he agreed on cost approximately $30,000 for works such as laying tiles, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and door works. He was verbally assured by one of the contractor’s staff that the renovation will be completed in less than two months. They then agreed on a progressive payment structure as follows: 1. 10% upon confirmation of job 2. 50% upon the start of work 3. 30% upon completion of wet works 4. 5% upon arrival of carpentry 5. And the final 5% upon completion However, this structure was not followed; due to constant requests for payment from his contractor’s side, Mr M ended up paying up to 90% of the total cost even though only the demolition works, laying of wall tiles at the kitchen and toilet, and painting were done. Outstanding works included the laying of floor tiles and installation of the toilet doors, toilet bowls, and washbasins. Despite this, Mr M decided to give them the benefit of the doubt in hopes the company will speed up the renovation after receiving payment. However, this was not the case as the renovation works have yet to be completed even after nine months. Sounds familiar? Ever faced a similar situation? The Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) has some useful tips to help you navigate your renovation smoothly. Check them out here: CASE - What To Do If Your Renovation Goes Wrong?

  6. If you need elegant furnishings at affordable prices, IUIGA's got a wide range of furniture in the Luxury / Glam department. Wanna go for a Luxury / Glam look for your living room? Luxury / Glam Style This style is what its name indicates - think glamorous and rich fittings and furnishings in your home. It is not about how much you put into your living room, but rather, the quality of what you put in it. Lush textiles such as leather, suede, and velvet will make for opulent upholstery, while glossy surfaces and glittery metallic finishes in your furniture will add ‘upper-class’ to your living room. Bold, dark or muted colours (blue, black, grey, red, green, etc) in grainy patterns on your walls help to complete the look. However, despite what it sounds like, going for the glam style is far from intimidating; in fact, it is possible to turn your home into a luxurious abode without breaking your budget. 7. Fancy a contemporary look for your living room? Contemporary Style The contemporary style is often mixed up with the modern style; while they may share some similarities such as simple designs, down-to-earth materials, and clean lines, contemporary focuses on the trends of today. Contemporary keeps up with what is popular in interior design today; it uses neutral colour palettes (like black, white, and grey), metal-based or metallic materials, and organic, fluid shapes. It may even borrow design traits from other styles to form something unique to appeal to today’s market. 8. Depending on your style preference, there are a few ways you can do up your living room. Especially if you are using IUIGA's extensive furniture collections. If you prefer a chic and modern look for your living room, which IUIGA items best complement it? Mid-Century Modern Style Also known as the ‘MCM’ style, this popular variation of the ‘modern’ style originated in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. Due to the housing demands then, there was a focus on function and simplicity. Furnishings based on this style are simply designed, with more emphasis on practicality rather than aesthetic. However, ‘simple’ does not equate ‘boring’; MCM-styled furniture may have pops of bold, bright colours on them to accentuate the space - think mustard yellow, teal, sapphire blue, muted red, and dark green. They can also be crafted from combinations of different materials (glass with wood, plastic with wood, metal with wood, etc). A common trait of MCM furnishings is the slim-line furniture legs to avoid a bulky, cumbersome look.
