  11. http://www.singaporelawwatch.sg/remweb/leg...%20ex-colleague Conned lawyer fails in suit against ex-colleague [2011] 29 Mar_ST Title: Conned lawyer fails in suit against ex-colleague Source: Straits Times Author: K. C. Vijayan, Law Correspondent Legal News Archive A LAWYER who accused a former colleague of misleading her into investing in a $64 million scam has had her case dismissed by the High Court. Ms Teresa Chan Pui Woo had sued fellow lawyer Jonathan Tan over the failed deal in which she lost about $860,000. But Justice Lai Siu Chiu said in a judgment released yesterday: 'While the court is not unsympathetic to Teresa for the losses she has suffered, it was clearly disingenuous of her to attempt to blame those losses on Jonathan.' Both lawyers worked for the Raffles Law Practice Group, the court heard. They got along well socially and professionally, partly because they were both Christians. Mr Tan was said to have introduced Ms Chan to a businessman called Michael Ng in 2002. She had no idea that Mr Ng - who presented himself as a banker and fellow Christian - was actually a former convicted fraudster. He told her he had $64 million locked up in a bank in Britain, which could be released only if a tax was paid to the 'British International Monetary Fund', which later turned out to be fictitious. Mr Ng said that if she gave him $816,336, he would guarantee her a return of $1.675 million in two weeks once the tax was paid and the money released. Ms Chan handed over two cheques totalling $150,000 and a third for $672,000. She even mortgaged her condominium unit in Sunset Way, borrowed from her father and sold her car. Additional sums totalling about $38,000 followed until January 2005. However the promised returns failed to materialise, even though she made several demands. When she realised she had been cheated, Ms Chan was 'completely devastated'. The lawyer sued Mr Ng, who was ordered by the High Court earlier this month to pay her $18 million in damages. She also sued Mr Tan for misrepresentation, claiming he had agreed to protect her interests if she signed the deal. Mr Tan, defended by a legal team led by Senior Counsel Michael Khoo, argued that he was involved in the scheme solely as Mr Ng's lawyer and Ms Chan was well aware of this. He did not assume any responsibility towards her and she did not rely on him in her decision to invest in the scheme. The judge found no evidence that Ms Chan, who was represented by lawyer S. Gunaseelan, had even once blamed Mr Tan when she failed to get her returns 'or even when she realised the entire scheme of Michael's was a complete scam'. Instead, the evidence showed she looked only to Mr Ng for the money and she was the one who dictated the terms of the agreements she signed with him, said Justice Lai. 'She saw Michael's scheme as an attractive investment, she knew what she wanted and she was clearly in control at all times. Teresa was not a babe in the woods who relied heavily on Jonathan to protect her interests.' The judge said that Ms Chan's and Mr Tan's versions of events were 'diametrically opposing'. 'If I were to accept one side's version, it would mean the other side had not been truthful.' She added it was 'unfair of Teresa to repeatedly accuse Jonathan in cross-examination of being a liar when the objective evidence showed otherwise'. Mr Ng, 70, a former police inspector, first made the news in 1981 when he was jailed for nine years for his part in a $23 million fraud conspiracy involving the scuttling of a cargo ship. Justice Lai noted this was 'unfortunately' not known to Ms Chan or other investors who 'only knew Michael as a Christian brother in need of assistance'. She added it was unclear whether he had masterminded the latest fraud or had also been deceived and ended up dragging other victims down with him. The police had advised him in a letter in July 2006 'to refrain from soliciting for loans', warning he could face charges if he persisted. Justice Lai said Ms Chan had been the unfortunate victim of an advance fee fraud, more commonly known as the '419 fraud' or 'Nigerian scam'. She said the case was 'a stark reminder of the adage that if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is'. vijayan@sph.com.sg Source: Straits Times © Singapore Press Holdings Ltd. 15. I had washing machine base b'coz it was left behind by the previous owner. No choice. Fridge base, we don't want. Personally we prefer not to have base for both. Reason: Next time want to buy a new one. No need to worry, base big enough or not. For mopping the floor, Fridge is much more easy then the washing machine. Fridge just push it out then can mop liao. Washing machine, u need at least 1 more ppl to hold on the washing machine then you need to fast hand fast mop the base.

  17. http://sg.finance.yahoo.com/news/Singapore...1089439142.html On Wednesday 30 March 2011, 16:00 SGT SINGAPORE, March 30 (Reuters) - Strong demand from mainland Chinese buyers helped Singapore private home prices edge higher in the first quarter of 2011, despite government efforts to cool the market, property consultants Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) said on Wednesday. The average value of non-prime private apartments in Singapore reached a record high of S$1,043 ($823) per square foot in the first quarter, exceeding the previous high of S$1,020 psf in the last three months of 2010, JLL estimates. Singapore, like Hong Kong, has found it difficult to keep a lid on property prices due to the surge in global liquidity that has pushed mortgage rates to near record lows as well as strong demand from cash-rich China nationals. [iD:nL3E7E91AR] The increasing cost of owning a home has become a political issue ahead of general elections that may take place as early as next month. Chinese nationals made up the largest group of foreign buyers of Singapore property, accounting for about one quarter of all purchases by foreigners in the city-state, JLL added. "The surge in Chinese buyers in Singapore coincided with the policy tightening in China," said Chua Yang Liang, JLL's head of research for Southeast Asia. The strong demand from China will continue so long as Beijing's fiscal and monetary policies remain conducive to overseas investment by wealthier Chinese nationals, he added. Chinese investors last year overtook Indonesians to become the largest group of foreign buyers of Singapore residential property. In the first three months of 2011, mainland Chinese accounted for nearly one-third of purchases by non-Singaporeans in the top end of the market which JLL defined as homes worth S$5 million and above. Singapore has stepped up construction of lower-cost government apartments and increased subsidies for first-time home buyers in the lower-income groups in a bid to cool the housing market. It also introduced new anti-speculation measures on Jan 13 that included tougher borrowing limits and a hefty stamp duty of 16 percent of the selling price for those who buy and sell within 12 months. [iD:nL3E7CD0WK] Singapore private home prices rose 17.6 percent last year despite government attempts to cool the market in February and August. The country's Urban Redevelopment Authority will release flash estimates for private home prices in the first quarter on April 1. 20. Indonesian maid jumps after dropping baby from 23rd floor 2004 SINGAPORE (DPA): An Indonesian maid flung a 5-month-old baby boy down 23 stories to his death and then threw herself off the window ledge of the flat seconds later, Singapore police said on Sunday. The body of the boy, Yap Soon Heng, dressed in a white shirt and pink pants, was found lying on a grass patch on Saturday while the maid, identified as Sulastri, landed in shrubs and palm trees about 5 meters away. Soon Heng's parents had left him and Sulastri at hisgrandparents' flat earlier that day, neighbors told The Sunday Times. The couple, in their 30s, took their 3-year-old daughter out shopping. Sources said Soon Heng was sleeping in the bedroom when Sulastri walked in and scooped him up into her arms. She stood on a wooden stool and climbed out onto the window ledge, where she sat with the crying baby balanced precariously on her lap for at least five minutes before letting go of the boy. "She was sitting there ... and kept turning her head back as if she was talking to someone inside the room," said John Chua, 43, an eyewitness. "Suddenly, she just extended her arms out and let the baby slip from her hands," he was quoted as saying. "A while later, she pushed herself off the ledge with her hands." He saw an elderly man, believed to be the child's grandfather, look down from the window. Neighbors said they heard raised voices earlier in the day. Later the boy's grandmother started sobbing and screaming. Sulastri had been working for the family for less than a year. (***)

  22. Grief-stricken hubby gives up on life By Chong Shin Yen 17 Sep 2010 IT has been said that when you lose a loved one, a part of you dies too. And that may be true of Mr Drake Poh. The Singaporean businessman lost his wife and daughter when they were killed by their maid six years ago. Gone was the love of his life, his companion, his confidante - the woman he had fallen in love with at first sight. They had been married for only four years when tragedy struck. And Mr Poh, 50, never got over their deaths. He lost the will to live. Last Friday, he died from complications due to kidney failure. His sister, Madam Jenny Poh, 44, said that he had a kidney transplant in India 16 years ago. But after his wife's death, Mr Poh stopped watching his diet. Said Madam Poh, a housewife: 'When his wife was around, she would cook for him and take care of him. She made sure he stuck to a strict and healthy diet. 'After she died, he couldn't be bothered anymore.' Mr Poh's wife, Madam Angie Ng, 34, and their daughter, Crystal, 3, were stabbed to death in his sixth-storey office at Block 165, Bukit Merah Central, on 28May, 2002. Their maid, Sundarti Supriyanto, then 22, had set the place on fire. She was found outside the burning unit by firefighters, carrying the couple's son, Leon, who was then 18 months old. Sundarti was jailed for life for manslaughter in September 2004.
  23. May 12, 2010 Maid accused of sex with boy By Elena Chong AN INDONESIAN maid was hauled to court on Wednesday for having sex with her employer's 12-year-old son. The 27-year-old is alleged to have caused the boy, with his consent, to engage in oral sex at the HDB unit in the east on Dec 25 last year. She is also accused of causing the boy to have sex with her sometime at end-June and mid-December last year. The fourth charge under the Children and Young Persons Act states that she committed an obscene act with a child by engaging in sex and oral sex with him between end-June and Dec 25. The court has ordered the name of the victim to be withheld or anything that will lead to his identification. If convicted of the sexual penetration of a minor under 16, she can be jailed for up to 10 years and fined on each charge. The maximum penalty for the CYPA charge is a fine of up to $5,000 and/or a jail term of up to two years. The short and bespectacled domestic worker was offered bail of $20,000. Her passport was impounded. She will appear in court again on May 19.
  24. http://singaporemaid.blogspot.com/2010/09/...ep-28-2010.html Sep 28, 2010 Maid broke toddler's bone By Elena Chong A FILIPINO maid who was massaging her employer's three-year-old son pulled his leg so forcefully that his right thigh bone was broken. Myla Cabradilla Cabuenas, 30, then told her employer that the toddler had fallen at home and injured his knee. But the employer, who had wired her home with cameras, viewed the video footage and saw what the maid had done to the boy. He has a history of developmental delay and suffers from epilepsy. She told her husband, a 36-year-old engineer, who then called the police. Yesterday, the maid was jailed nine months for ill-treating the child under her care at her employer's home on July 1. Assistant Public Prosecutor Asran Samad said the maid was alone with the boy when she placed him on a mattress and began massaging his legs. She had been hired three months earlier to perform basic physiotherapy techniques, including massaging the boy, and caring for him.
