Thinking about adding an arcade machine to my game room. Worth it?

Recommended Posts

Lately I’ve been seeing more people bring arcade-style machines into their homes instead of just sticking with consoles or PC setups. It actually looks like a fun way to make a game room feel more interactive. I’m considering adding at least one arcade cabinet or maybe an air hockey table to my basement entertainment area. The idea is to have something that friends can walk up to and play instantly without needing accounts, downloads, or controllers.

What I like about arcade machines is the whole atmosphere they create, lights, sounds, and that competitive feeling you don’t always get with modern gaming setups. Do they get used often or does the novelty wear off after a while? And which type of machine would be the best starting point for a small home setup?

I had the same question about a year ago before I built my little game corner in the basement. I started with one arcade cabinet and eventually added an air hockey table, and honestly it gets way more use than I expected. The biggest difference compared to consoles is that people naturally gather around arcade machines. When friends visit, someone always ends up challenging another person or trying to beat a high score. While researching options I found https://arcadedad.com/ and it helped me understand what kinds of machines are available now. There are actually a lot of setups that work well for homes, not just big commercial arcades. If you’re starting small, I’d recommend one classic arcade-style machine first. Once people start playing it, you’ll probably want to add more later. That’s basically what happened to me.
