  1. I find Poh Joo at Jalan Besar not too bad, the prices are reasonable. But they dont have a lot of items on display so if you know what you want, may be easier to check the price and order.
  2. Your hacking very extensive? Mine is condo and I hacked an L shaped wall (approximate 4ft x 4ft) come with make good + PE submission, total $900
  3. Started my renovation in mid December *finally*! Just wanna share that if you have a lot of customization, it may be better to find main con as they can cater to your every whim If you doing everything standard then sourcing for "specialist" is a good choice as they do offer a much better price. Quality may be questionable so do ask to see their workmanship first before confirming. One thing to note is what everyone has been saying, you better have a lot of time to coordinate and be willing to face the TAIJI of involving so many parties.
  4. Can pls PM me the contact too? Thanks! May I ask if sliding glass door works OK to keep the smell from the kitchen from "escaping" to the whole house? Cos sliding doors sure have gaps. I do like to cook often so don't want the whole house smelling like food after each cooking session.. I will keep kitchen door open most of the time so intending to get sliding door than a swing door (which I know can close and "seal" the kitchen)
  5. Please PM me this painter's contact! Thank you so much
  6. I totally agree with Summer about going directly but I really having a hard time finding direct contacts Been looking at newspaper and calling but most companies do EVERYTHING now. I guess easily to earn $? So anyone who knows of a good direct contact pls PM me! I looking for - Hackers and tilers - False ceiling installation - Carpentry (willing to custom make furniture) - Electrician - Painters Thank you!
  7. I was at the Asia Pacific Furniture Fair just yesterday and happened upon Neon's booth. The demonstration on banging the floor and setting fire to it did attracted me to sit down and listen. I asked explicitly if they are the sole supplier and he said YES, and the flooring is water proof and termite proof. As the calculation of pricing was pretty good, we wanted to proceed to place a deposit already. That's when I saw the 10% wastage charged and became uneasy about hidden costs. I asked for a detailed breakdown of all the charges and what is the final amount. That's when the sales person became really pushy, saying only a few hundred dollars difference, I can afford my house, what's that few hundred dollars, etc, etc.. In the end, we said will go back and walked around the hall a bit more. That's where we found the REAL recognized distributor of Berry! To cut a long story short, at the end of the day we had quotes from several laminate flooring companies and Neon worked out to be the most expensive loh...
  8. I agreed that signing a contract is beneficial to both parties. BUT I did get a quote with unfavorable payment terms for house owner. Is there a NORM payment terms or up to owner to negotiate? Terms I got: 10% upon confirmation 40% upon commencement 40% upon completion of wetwork or measurement of carpentry work 10% upon handover of keys I'm OK with 10% confirmation and 40% commencement BUT BUT the next 40% is scary! Imagine carpentry do until cannot make it or got flaws then with just 10% unpaid, I'm pretty screwed if contractor don't care to rectify!
  9. What is sealant? I understand there is something to be done for old houses to get the moisture out from the walls before repainting? Plastering is only required if your walls are uneven right? Sorry.. really know nuts about printing
  10. I was told by an ID that stainless steel will have like "air bubble" effect after sometime.. that's why I was asking about the uneven effect. Glad to know no such problem! I got the contact already. Thank you so much Btw, read your blog, the DIYs are all so interesting and nice! I wanna go Ikea buy cute cloths keep also *haha*
  11. Thinking to manage renovation by directly getting contractors to do work for areas they specialize in. But I understand getting the sequence will become crucial.. Like some advise on whether it is advisable to do in the following sequence: P.S. Mine is resale so 10 yrs old liao 1. Hack everything that needs to be hacked! 2. Hack existing storeroom to *** to bedroom 2. Patch up walls with holes/ cracks/ chipped 3. Seal up maid toilet to convert to storeroom 3. Do flooring (includes doing stand for fridge and washing machine..) 4. Change aircon system + change trunking 5. Do false ceilings 6. Kitchen 7. Carpentry (new wardrodes, TV console, wooden feature wall, etc) 8. New coat of paint 9. Varnish parquet floor 10. Polish marble floor 11. Do up doors (thinking to laminate) 12. Install gate After listing all these.. I realize a lot of work... *apprehensive but EXCITED at the same time!*
  12. Wow, nice leh I DO like stainless steel top! Thanks for the info! You still have your carpenter's contact? I heard warnings about stainless steel got a lot scratches and uneven surface.. is it true?
